Monserrat Caballe was extending her vibrato. She was famous for being able to sing soft notes for a long time. Freddie was famous for singing a vibrato faster than anyone else and using his ventricular folds in his throat to create subharmonics something only Tuvan singers had ever done before allowing him to create a unique voice no one else has been able to do. Freddie and Monsy as he called her, we’re able to sing so beautifully using their unique voices! ❤

Crazy for your reaction Hap ✌🏼🥰 Such a haunting song. Feels like an old song from a century ago… Freddie truly was an old soul. Sadly I often wonder what Freddie would have done next ??

I've run out of adjectives to describe these two when they sang together. Normally I don't care for Opera but I love Freddie and Montsy

Very interesting alanysis Hap. You seem very genius to come up with such ideas. Who knows ?? Maybe you are the first one who have ever thought that way, and that's what Freddie all along meant to message to us. 🥰 Great great reaction@

These two ❤❤. So beautiful together. You can really feel Freddie's love for Japan. Montserrat...that voice. Wow. The whole band had a special relationship with Japan but Freddie even more so. He developed a love for it from Queen's first tour there🏯. One of his last major vacations, with his husband/boyfriend Jim Hutton, was a very luxurious trip to Japan where Freddie went on a wild spending spree of Japanese furnishings and art much of which, of course, ended up in Garden Lodge. Not surprising that Japan showed up more than once in Queen and Freddie's music. 🏯⛩

Hence the soft spot Japan has always held for Freddie and Queen.

In Freddie's head he had the structure worked out just not all the vocals filling in here for Montsy. The final version is a masterpiece.

Freddie and Montserrat created some incredible magic together. Such a rare, valuable moment in time that was luckily captured on track so the future generations are priveleged to listen.

I understand what you mean about “they are like 2 different songs” - it’s similar to hearing “Exercises in Free Love” immediately followed by “Ensueño” . I both cases the first is a Demo for the second. When Monserrat takes those high notes as only she can, then Freddie enriches it all with his baritone lines, it IS like a different song, albeit related.

Hap you can still surprise me after watching to the many Queen and Freddie reactions you have already done. I have never heard the demo version to La Japonaise, thanks for sharing this. Freddie was so much in love with Japan, the Japanese culture, architecture, art and the famous Japanese tranquility, that he collected all his emotions relating to Japan and put them into this song.

One of the most perfect pieces of music created. My favourite on the Barcelona album although I love it all. He captured the Japanese tone and essence perfectly, as Freddie would. Amazing. Thank you.

What can you say about this duo? Beautiful! I just checked Amazon to see if this album (CD) is still available. Found this in the description: Reworked in 2012. Rufus Taylor - the son of Queen’s Roger Taylor - plays drums on ‘The Golden Boy’ and ‘How Can I Go On’, a track that also features John Deacon’s bass guitar. Did not know that!

Stunning album, beautiful song…. I personally heard the demo elements in the final version and the reason why the final version is so incredible is due to the phenomenal talents of Montsy and Freddie where the 2 somehow create something that is even bigger and more impressive than the sum of the parts!!
    ❤👑

Showcases Freddie’s genius perfectly. Lyrics and music written by him and Mike Moran, and performed beautifully by him and his beloved Montsy. Great analysis Hap - and Barcelona was written by Freddie with Mike’s input for her. Jim “Miami” Beach said that she asked Freddie to write a song about her home town, and Barcelona was born. It’s a love song, though that’s an often missed fact.

Always my favorite off their album
Never listened to the "demo" before. It's got so much more of an operetta feel than the actual. Richer in a Japanese-esque feel. Freddie crafts his voice beautifully to move around Montserrat's. He had so very much more music in him.

In the mid 80's "Barcelona" the album/collaboration, was initially envisioned, and the desire had beginning attention which Freddie shared with his and Queen's Manager, Jim Beach. The album was released in 1988.The single was a top ten hit in 1987. The album pictured, with orchestral score by a Prague based orchestra was produced to mark the 25th anniversary of the song. The art work you reference was by 'Matilda Beach'. It was, my album says 2012 - Hollywood Records. It would be great to know why they selected such art work - perhaps to entice the interest of families and youngsters. Freddie had been dead since '92. Montsey was still alive..EDIT: I've returned to suggest you listen to Freddie sing 'Staying Power' (Hot Space CD). He is not shy, freely implies what is on his mind when it's good for the song..

It's fascinating how he builds this beautiful piece on elements of his beloved Japan. And yes he spoke some Japanese, enough to buy everything he saw and liked, Sake warmers for example.-
There is a photo with him sitting on a box surrounded by crates and boxes all the way to the ceiling. The pic was taken on his last vacation with Jim Hutton.
Thank you for your reaction. ☮

Thank you for this. I own both of the Barcelona albums, the '88 release and the 2012 reworking with full orchestra, but had not heard the demo version before. The Koto sound then would have been a synthesizer. For the 2012 recording, Mike Moran imported one of Japan's finest Koto artists to do that part live. What a difference! Much of the music in the original was synth, but for the anniversary edition with the orchestra, it was all live. They isolated the original vocals, replaced the drum machine on The Golden Boy and How Can I Go On with Rufus Tiger Taylor's live drumming, and kept John Deacon's bass parts, as mentioned below in a post by Nanner. Exercises In Free Love was not on the first edition but was included in the second one. I don't remember if you have reacted to that little gem.
Have you heard Queen's newest release from just last week, Face It Alone, with previously unreleased vocals by Freddie? Will you React to it?

🔥💕🎶 Fascinating! Yes, definitely 2 different songs. I love the piano work on the demo and it is interesting how the final cut was Queenified in portions. Other parts were more pure opera. Montserrat had a great vibrato to her voice. She and Freddie truly did complement each others ss beautifully. What a great tribute to his beloved Japan. In some reading, a person likened Japan to a person and the love affair that Freddid was having with Japan. Interestin concept. Lovely reaction Hap.❤. Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕

Thank you for this fantastic analytical reaction HAP. And yes, although the first one is a demo for the second, at the end they are different, but fantastic in their own right. The Barcelona album is a statement, that two legends have found each other and created such wonderful song artworks that are out of this world. The lead single "Barcelona" was actually both a dedication to Montserrat‘s hometown and a tribute to their friendship. In "La Japonaise" his connectedness to Japan shows and as soon as he started singing "dededees" you started to smile. I admire both Montsi and Freddie for taking the effort to sing in Japanese on this track and for stepping quite outside of their comfort zone in terms of singing ability on the entire album as well. Again, thank you HAP for this outstanding reaction🥰🙋🏻‍♀️.
