I love this video and I fell in love with bean pie many years ago in the most unlikely way. I was an Asian-American kid growing up in Washington, DC so I would see the guys from the Nation of Islam impeccably dressed and on the streets of the city with an armful of The Final Call and an armful of bean pies. I wasn't religious, so I really didn't understand it and I didn't have any attitude about the people selling them. But, I was nonetheless a bit shy about buying one (in the same way I am when I see a foreign restaurant in another country). So, I never got close enough even smell one. Years later when I was in my early 20s, I had a girlfriend going to college up in Baltimore. I left her place very late at night to go home to DC because I worked the next day. As I drove through the freezing, deserted streets on my way to I-95, I came to a stop light, and next to me was this really old Nation of Islam man, dressed impeccably, walking up and down the median with papers in one arm and pies in the other. I couldn't believe it. It must have been past midnight! The streets were completely deserted! It was freezing outside...and this old (...he looked 60) guy didn't even have an overcoat on! On top of that, he looked exhausted. So, there were the two of us...just hanging there while I waited for the light to change. At that moment, I just felt terrible for him. I had to buy something and the pie looked better than the newspaper. I bought two of them and put them on the seat next to me. About halfway home, I began to smell something wonderful. The heater was actually blowing on them and warming up the pies and before I got home, I reached over and grabbed a hunk. To this day, I think it was the best custard-type pie I've ever had.
You know...I wish more people (not just black people and Muslims) would try this beautiful dessert. Food brings people together and while all of us may not agree on everything, food does bring an appreciation of each other's cultures. Great video! Thanks for the recipe... and this trip down memory lane. :)

My mom (RIH)was queen 🤴 of making pies and this was a specialty. We just happen have known the sister that created the recipe back in the day. Sis Karim was unmatched in the kitchen as she was the personal chef for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad (peace be upon him). Just a beautiful lady. The original pie is a LOT of work and flavor is incredible but I appreciate Ms Pam giving us her version. ❤

Have you ever tried to change your voice and talk for an extended extreme amount of time? Not only does it hurt a lot but it’s weird how a person will put themselves through unnecessary discomfort to be accepted by strangers. It’s not attractive or necessary to do all that.

I WAS BORN IN 1951 IN MICHIGAN. MY UNCLE WAS THE STATE BEAN INSPECTOR FOR MANY YEARS HE ALWAYS BROUGHT BEANS TO OUR HOUSE SO WE HAD PLENTY. TIMES WERE HARD BACK THEN THERE WASN'T ALWAYS A LOT OF FOOD BUT MY MOM WAS A GOOD COOK AND SHE KNEW HOW TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF ANYTING. I REMEMBER THIS PIE BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT SHE CALLED IT. PROBABLY NOT BEAN PIE BECAUSE BEING KIDS AND EATING SO MANY BEANS, WELL YOU KNOW. ANYWAY I KNOW IT WAS GREAT NEVER KNEW HOW TO FIX IT OR EVEN WHAT WAS IN IT .
THANK YOU FOR YOUR FANTASTIC RECIPES THIS REALLY TAKES ME BACK HOME I'M 72 NOW AND THESE ARE THINGS I'D REALLY LIKE TO TRY. I LOVE YOU PAM GOD BLESS YOU.

Hello, I must try your bean pie as I've never had this...why my family or community in Germany never made this is unknown. I enjoy beans all types having kept dried beans in 50-pound barrels because planting season allowed us growing food with harsh too long winters. My first thought was since beans it was dinner pie...you make surprising dessert pie from beans!!! If only my mother knew that pie from beans is something?! Yes, you know I will make this! You compared to the sweet potato pie which I love & know well. I grew up many years being young & my mother also fried red & white sweet potatoes adding sorghum at breakfasts which were eaten with biscuits. Your channel is a gift to the world. Thank you.

I had NO idea beans could be used as a sweet. I've always known them to be savory. Your recipe came up as a suggestion because I was watching a Pinto Bean fudge recipe. Then I clicked on your video. I mentioned to my partner (who is from Tennessee) that I saw two bean videos used as desserts, one fudge and one pie. He said, "Pinto bean pie is one of my all time favorite pies, A bit like pumpkin pie but 10Xs better. I love it MUCH more than pumpkin or sweet potato pie." He asked me if I was going to make it. After watching your video, I thought "How could I not?" I feel like I just have to try this. I'll just use Pinto beans instead though since that seems to be the bean that he prefers. You have such a fun confident and charismatic personality, I'll probably have to watch your video as I make it, so I'll just pretend you're by my side guiding me through with a few fun giggles along the way. I WILL be making your Bean Pie recipe and I've subscribed. I can't wait to see your fun, outgoing personality on your other videos and your recipes and I'm sure I'll be looking forward to making your other dishes. May the lord lift his face and shine upon you. You appear blessed and may your many blessings continue as you spread it.

@@dorothybrown8859 I did! It was actually incredibly delicious. I had NO idea what to expect. It didn't really taste like beans.

@@Skoben2000 Thanks for the reply. I might try it with the Pintos also. BTW, I am from Tennessee, also.

@@dorothybrown8859 Well, that explains your pinto bean preference. Lol Aren't we such an intriguing creature, us humas. Up north, white beans are preferred, Certain regions in the South, the pinto bean, Louisiana has a fondness for red beans, and southwest, the balck bean is preferred. Please come back and post your reaction. I'd be interested in hearing yours as well. :)

I love Bean pies they taste just like sweet potato pies or pumpkin pies my mother made the poke bean and pineapple pie before but of course she omitted the little piece of pork that comes in the can she just used to Bean she pureed the beans and she just use the regular ingredients that she would usually use for a sweet potato pie or a pumpkin pie

My mom used to make bean pies every once in a while for my dad. As a kid I thought she had lost her mind! Now this reminds me I need her to write her recipe in her "memories book"
