That was my cassette deck, that faster speed made good tapes a TDK D-90 sounded much better at high speed than a SA-90 at normal speed. Unfortunately the motor went and was able to get it replaced. Marantz warranty was great at the time.

I am curious did using this deck force you to remember to make a second copy for the car/walkman, or did you record a "master" at 3 3/4 then copy selections at the normal speed... Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting!

@@ACBMemphis yeah I did make copies for the car at normal speed. Those were usually a TDK D series or equivalent. The noise floor was noticed in the car so much and you didn't feel so bad when the car deck ate it .

My father bought one new, SD1000 2 speed here in Australia. Was our home tape deck for many years. Unfortunately, it eventually needed replacement belts and while in the garage waiting on them, the shelf it was on collapsed, sending the unit crashing to the ground. Landed on the transport, bending everything behind it and damaging the knobs, faceplate and VU meters. It went in the bin after that.

What an awesome youtube channel this is. You guys are like the American version of Techmoan and really cool that you involve your kid in the video’s, although he sounds a bit tired in this one 😜 Keep up the great stuff 👍🏻

I have a B.I.C. high speed deck. There is a significant rise in inner detail and musicality at the higher speed in the B.I.C. decks.

I can hear the difference even over my iPhone speaker. The high speed sounds silkier. The low speed sounds grainy. I’m actually surprised there’s that much of a difference.
I think what killed the decks was the arrival of the Walkman and car stereo cassette decks that didn’t support high speed playback. Also, even with a 90 minute tape, it might be difficult to fit even one side of an LP onto one side of a tape at the higher speed.

Yes, one thing cassettes were about was portability, and it would have been frustrating borrow a tape and not be able to change the speed in your player to match the recording... Thanks for watching!

Actually, the average playing time of LP's is about 20 minutes per side, so that would actually fit quite nice. The longest playing time I've seen (and own) is just over 26 minutes, it's also a single track and the runout area/groove is pretty much non-existent, most (if not all) automatic turntables will not play the track till the end.

Yeah you nailed it. Just had a smooth sound and the high frequency roll off was out far enough not to be heard and a standard TDK D series tape worked so well there wasn't any need to use a SA. The extra amount of tape that the Bass energy could be stored on was a nice benefit. With a single rec/play head it did pretty good for a two hundred dollars deck. At high speed it out performed the entry level 3 head decks , but then the eighties rolled in and most of the cassette decks got alot better. The Eighties was certainly the Golden Age for the cassette media.

It sounds like they did not design in high enough quality electronics to take advantage of the higher resolution high speed provides. But this is low resolution you tube.

The higher speed can take a higher record level. You need to compare with van halen songs.

Did it not sound good or the deck itself didn't function well? This is a pretty basic tape deck, so if the sound quality is not there not a lot of reason to use it feature-wise...
