The sharp bits on their feet are talons. They are made like our finger nails and keep growing. The talons are on the ends of the bird's toes. The toes are on their feet.

Fantastic video! I found you on TikTok and watched all your videos there and then headed over here for more. It looks like you don’t mix your colors at all before applying them- you use them straight out of the tube/pan and then mix them on the paper by dropping other colors in while wet, or by glazing, is that correct?
I am not only impressed with your painting skills but also with your teaching style. I'm learning so much just watching. I will be putting paint to paper when I have a few moments to really concentrate. This is beyond my skill level but I have been wanting to push myself a bit. @@aleg3674 That's a brilliant suggestion - I usually mix directly on paper and I can do a full video on just my red collection, i also have my pigments in blue, yellow and green "groups".... A big thank you for this idea and have a lovely weekend ❤️

Oh boy this was over a year ago...I just went through the description and I am pretty sure I've made those birds up as they are pretty simple and I've painted them before. I usually - especially since last year - provide my own reference photos or links to the ones I used from unsplash.com. In this case I am afraid it was just from my imagination - so sorry! ❤️❤️❤️

Great question! When using color, I prefer not to apply black at all, and use Indigo [cold] or Perylene Violet [warm] instead. I only generally use pure black in black and white work. Sometimes - if you really have to - I recommend Payne's gray - its softer. Enjoy! :)

The watercolor and technique is excellent but as a 40 year biologist I just want to say in pigment - black is the sum of all colors. In light, not pigment, black is the lack of all color.

I am not a scientist but also don’t have a formal art education) I happen to have a business degree of all things) in any case it’s hard for me sometimes to wrap my my around these concepts, but I like your distinction of “in pigment” vs “in light” - that is very helpful for thinking through this 👌😊

I like the highlights on the birds' breasts; I'm still trying to get the hang of light-to-dark painting, and this video is a good demonstration of how to do that. Also, the result is amazing.

That entire bird chest area is basically a sphere so the values are organized as if you were shading a 3D ball - pick the lightest point / closest highlight and go darker around from there. Or at least that’s how I “organize” my lights and darks and it works well even without a good reference photo 😊

All birds have talons. At the tips of the toes are claws, but the entire foot is called a talon.
