  • Steve and Matt Bourie, from the American Casino Guide, discuss 8 things to never do at a blackjack table. They explain why you should never do these eight things and, why they are bad. Topics covered include: sitting at a 6-to-5 table, playing with a continuous shuffling machine, handing your money directly to the dealer, touching the cards at a multi-deck game, touching your bet once the hand starts, giving verbal signals to the dealer, not using basic strategy, and being a jerk to other players or the dealer.

      Never fail to tip the people serving you too. Especially the dealers. Dealers ARE NOT against the players. Quite the opposite in fact, they make minimum wage from the Casino and only survive on tips so, unless youre acting like a drunken obnoxious asshole, they WANT you to win so youre more likely to tip well.

      That's true, you could do that, but you're still wasting your time. Your time would be better spent with something else, surely, than squandering it getting a soft drink for free. Especially since it won't be worth what you'd spend in gasoline driving there and back. Even if you ride a free shuttle, it's a lot of time spent to get something of very little value.

    I went to Crown Casino in Melbourne Australia with 5000 in my pocket with the purpose of playing on the 100 minimum table. About 30 minutes later with stacks and stacks of chips I was invited to the Teak room which was more private and gave free drinks and food and had higher table limits. I couldn't do anything wrong...I didn't lose one single bet. The best one was when I put down a 4000 bet and got blackjack, I picked up my 6000 and went and cashed in my chips. I walked out of there with 33,600, a full stomach and a gut full of bourbon.
    A very happy day for me!

    I once had to have the casino review the camera because the dealer got my hand signal wrong. She was going way too fast and actually hit my hand with the card as I was waving it to stand. The card busted me, and I held my hand over the table, palm down, saying I was standing on that one. They called over the pit boss and the dealer admitted she may have mis--read the signal. So he reviewed it and paid me for the win.

      No, actually, casinos are actually quite fair in their dealings usually. They give you games where the odds can be calculated. Do you know what the stock market is? The stock market is like a blackjack game where the dealer deals you blank cards, and then THEY decide whether you won or lost and how much, because THEY, the house, your enemy, decides what it's worth.

      Leanne, what you play has no effect on the other player's winnig or losing. I won't go into statistics deeply, but "what you receive as a card is yours, based on a one-time event, when receiving that card". Now whether you win, or lose, is merely "based on the outcome at the table(dealer)". You have no effect on the other's and they have no effect on you. So play as you want and ignore them.

      Here's some tips that might help. For strategy, play the simple free online games or apps on your phone/computer(24:7 Blackjack is a good one) and have a basic strategy card open in a second window or printed out in front of you that you can refer to. It's really pretty simple once you play a while. There's only certain instances (like soft hands or pairs) that get tricky about double/split, hits, or stands. As for playing at a table, try to find a game off hours or to the side where you can play against the dealer and no one else. Most dealers are pretty helpful and understanding if you tell them you're a beginner, especially if you tip. Some hands alone with a good dealer will help your confidence with your signals and going through the motions. Don't be afraid to ask a pit boss for what you want. Tell them you're nervous around other players and ask if they can put you with a good dealer for one-on-one. This is probably better requested off peak hours. Finally, have realistic expectations. My goal is to MAYBE win a LITTLE money (if I happen to triple my initial bank I cash out), but in reality, if I can sit for a few hours, enjoy the drinks, watch people, have fun conversation, and break even, it's been a good night.

      @dvrdown1981 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great advice and thanks for posting. I might add it doesn't hurt to just stand back and observe both dealers and players at the tables in a crowded casino. I realize the urge to jump into the action is overwhelming but don't be in a hurry especially for a beginner. Also, sip the free drinks and don't guzzle. Never walk into a casino already tipsy.

    I love that the casinos sell the basic strategy guides. They happily encourage you to try to think that you are understand when you really don't. They will occasionally lose money to a card counter, but it will usually pale in comparison to the money they get from people who think they can count and people who think they understand basic strategy but don't, or at least don't for that particular setup.

The dealer for dealing 2. The cutter or 3. The newest guy/gal and sometimes its completely justified for the last. If you split 10s against a 10 that's dumb and you're playing for yourself and you deserve abuse for it...it took me a lot losses to figure splitting 10s was dumb and I got shit for it everytime I did it eventually I evolved as a player to never do it.

    I learned all of this within my first couple of days in Reno. If you have never been, this is all good info to have beforehand. I lived there for the better part of a year and really enjoyed blackjack. I didn't 'win' but I found it to be a very even game, with plenty of drinks being served that gave me good entertainment value for what I left behind. Look for single deck shoes, hand shuffled, with friendly dealers. Not sure if that even exists anymore (25 years since I was there) but they make their money by giving you lots of drinks to throw off your game. It worked, but I paid less to drink at a blackjack table than I would have in a bar in Canada and met more interesting peeps.

      It's been a few years since I've been to Reno, but then it was one of the last places in the USA with full pay (3:2) single deck. It was mostly dealer hit oft 17, with doubling allowed on 10 or 11 only, which has a pretty high house edge for basic strategy, but it was very countable.

    My girlfriend worked at a casino so I would regularly play with dealers that I knew. Several time I was told about something they called "dealer dumping". Being an engineer I believe in statistics and probabilities so initially I didn't believe them. Dealer dumping is where the dealer has a extended losing streak. Also the flip side can happen where the dealer has a winning streak. Maybe once a year I'd see these two phenomena happen. In every case one of two things happen. Either the pit boss quickly shuts down the table when the dealer keeps losing or the players get up an leave the table. If you see a dealer sitting alone at a table on a busy night take a moment and ask how it's going before you sit down. I've had dealers (that I knew) tell me not to play as they have been winning almost every hand. Listen to them.

      Just tell him the "count" dictates what you do. Lol... actually never say that. Everyone's actions affect all future outcomes, including people that think they are experts. If someone plays perfect basic strategy, their play can cause a bad outcome. Anything can happen in the short term, yet basic strategy is based on long term odds. You can just as easily have caused yourself to win and/or the dealer to bust, but nobody ever mentions or remembers when that happens, do they? Anytime I'm at a table with cranky and superstitious people, I just leave and find a more fun table. People need to chill and have fun... If they stay long enough, they will not leave a winner, guaranteed, no matter how good they think they are. You can play longer, on average (in theory), if you play good basic strategy, but many people giving out advice during actual play don't do that themselves. I see this more at the craps table than I do at blackjack. I never let dealers play my cards for me. The customer (tipper) is the boss.

    • @queifjay
      @queifjay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@incrediblesulk555 you have to understand that it is unknown what the next card up will be and for all intents and purposes it is completely random. While it's true that a bad play could cost the rest of the table...It's equally likely that a bad play will shake things up and benefit the rest of the table. Maybe you stole the dealers bust card? Maybe you stole a card that would cause the dealer to get 21? Mathematically, other people's play can not effect your actual chances of winning or losing.

    My father was a pit boss for so many years and he told me there are four important rules you touched on one of them but I’ll stick with priority by the list and it is common sense. 1: You’re not starting on the casinos dollar but even if you win it big at the beginning it is your money, you do not have to gamble it, don’t go past your point of preservation. This means that you can keep your level of living and playing. 2: you were never promised a win; huge, small, coming out even, these don’t happen all the time. If you don’t know what you are doing, the more likely you make a mistake, the higher percentage the casino has. 3: You are in a business with service and entertainment. There is an aim to please everyone. There is some recourse to aid in situations, if you are a person they want to keep around. Staying calm, politeness and detailed explanation of emotional upheaval due to x employees neglect for blah combined might get you a discount on one of the many service/entertainment venues but they would fire the employee for being inept before they consider giving a return. 4: you are there to enjoy yourself and be entertained. If you are not enjoying yourself that day it might be a better idea to choose another day to gamble, or another game. Just because in theory craps, pai gow and bacarrat have exponential odds for you, it may be not your game. It may be that gambling doesn’t work for you or brings out the worst in you. Just play well with others.

And if no one is sitting in the hot seat (last chair), I do. Say Table’s full, 3 busted, 1 split and both hands are in, and 1 has 18,(they’re friends) I’ve got a 13or14 and I stay, Dealer takes a face card and busts. It’s an unorthodox play, still I’m up the .5%. Once, the 3of us were only at the Table, kicking butt, then it’s usually time for new Dealer, but a new player sat at last chair, it was like they didn’t know how to play, and our luck ran out. They had to be playing for the House.

    My only losses were one for 30 bucks and two at 200 dollars. My best win was about 400. Gamble responsibly and know when to walk away.
    My bets are between 15 a hand and 45 a hand, depending on what I have that day.

    Let me call this #8b: Going along with your #8, Don't sit at the end seat to the right of the dealer because every player WILL get on your case if you don't play your hand like they want you to. Others at the table can and will also make poor choices, but the person sitting in the end seat will be the one that is ultimately blamed if the table loses.

    • @gowifb
      @gowifb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good call although I like to take that seat since I would play basic strategy. While some people are pissed if something bad happens most still keep their mouth shut since I still did what was proper. What I don't want is for someone that doesn't know what they are doing to take that seat as then for sure people will be commenting and blaming them every time something goes wrong. I just don't want to hear the whining and complaining so I am willing to take some glances every now and then instead of having a table where everyone is mad.

    i was in vegas back in the mid 90's, playing black jack at my motel (The Old Town Hall) when one of those mouthy guys you were talking about sat down...he acted half in the bag, complained at the lady beside him for taking his card, a couple times, she went to leave, but i told her to just swap seats with me, i bet, then i proceeded to hit 3 times till i busted the draw, buddy of course complained, i turned in my chair and just "looked" at him, not menacingly just like i was glancing at a wall color, but i never looked away, he bet, then i put down the minimum, without looking away, and proceeded to bust again, he opened his mouth, looked at me, and shut it, if he didn't bet, i didn't if he did, i did, and would eat up cards busting, still looking at him, till after about 15 or 20 minutes, he got up and left the building (i iknow, i followed him out the door and watched him leave, then nodded to security when i turned around, and walked past them back to the table to play for a bit more, the lady had left by then,and i walked away down a couple bills in the end, but the dealer kept grinning everytime i'd hit, and i couldn't stop humming The Carpenters "I'm On Top Of The World" (now if i hear that song on the radio i feel the smile come at the memory...in fact, i'm smiling as i type this)

  • @tmtmtlsml
    @tmtmtlsml 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    As a dealer, I can say that these are all very sound pieces of advice, especially that last one. I've been flipped off, cursed at, and insulted to my face because of the cards. I've got a pretty thick skin, and I realize that if I'm expecting tips from big wins, then I have to expect some salt from big losses. And I have no qualms about playing the big bad dealer for entertainment purposes. It's a game that's supposed to be fun, and I try to help people enjoy their time at my table. But players forget that we're still people, just like them (and we really do want them to win. It's not like we're playing with our own money, after all). There's no need to be disrespectful or personally insult us over a game that we don't have any control over.
    Also, I desperately wish that there was a well-known tip rate for dealers like there is in the restaurant industry. When I was a player, I never knew what an appropriate tip amount was, so I would always just kinda guess with whatever small chips I had leftover after I colored up. But for anyone curious what dealers don't find insulting, if you win, roughly 10% of the winnings is a good start (adjusted for level of service, of course. No need to tip the stone-face, silent dealer that didn't add anything to your evening). I can't tell you the number of times a fellow dealer has told me about a $4,000 winner that tipped $3 (or sometimes not at all). In places that pool tips, that hurts everyone.
    Also also, this should be obvious, but no, shufflers aren't rigged, and yes, I've had more than one player tell me that they are (but they still played, surprise surprise -_- )

    The last one is sooo true, 40+ years ago i went to the casino and was blackballed from all of them. I was new to blackjack ( and had only been to a casino 2 other times in my life which i just played slots) and kept double downing on high cards, 14 through 18...I did this 14 times and every single time i got the drop card which gave me 21. Along the way, the people at the table kept screaming at me & explaining how i was screwing them. But when i got the drop card, they were like, well thats just dumb luck...hahaha by the 10th time i did it i had 3 pit bosses watching me and 1/2 the table left. By # 14, the management asked me to leave ( with 5 security officers around me) and never come back. Hahahah it was great especially because i had no idea what i was doing and it was all pure luck & just like you said, I was there to have fun. I didnt care if i lost. BTW, i havent been in a casino since & dont gamble but i won 1200.00 bucks that night lol.

As to kicking you out after only winning 1200 that's nuts. You musta been at a shitty small casino. When I call out double down on a hard hand the pit bosses don't give a fuck. Can't imagine why they would want to kick you out for doing the dumbest thing in blackjack especially for such a small amount.

    1. You can never find a spot at a table to sit at. There is usually a line of people waiting to get on the only 4 normal black jack tables in the whole casino which are now usually 25 min a hand!
    2. They never let you touch your own cards
    3. They're constantly trying to confuse you with new versions of Black Jack like Spanish 21 or the version where you get to see the dealers face down card and they insist you hit or stay because you know what the dealer has
    4. They never use anything short of a 7 deck shoe.
    5. They don't let you surrender
    6. The people around you are usually grumpy and weird. I swear AC is filled with people who have mental problems.

      Yeah index plays will mess with people like that. Stuff like hitting 12 against 4-6. If I know the count is low like -4 or so and I get a 12 against a 6, I'll be like "alright let's do stupid things." Then I'll hit, get an 8, then the dealer will make a hand, like a 17 or something. Gets others salty but I don't care.
      As far as side bets go, I use them to keep track of how many hands I'm playing. And they're good to play if you're counting as well. If the count is high and the ace count is low, I'll usually put a lot of money in the side bet (match the dealer at the casinos I play at). Getting a double match win but then losing your 20 to a dealer's blackjack is pretty hilarious cuz you still made money haha.

    Just a comment on "don't tell the dealer - use hand signals". Yes, but as a regular player who plays hours at a time we get tired and some times our signals get a bit sloppy and are misunderstood. While hand signals are required, I find all the dealers I play with also appreciate speaking as well as it reassures us both my hand said what I told it too! I should add I usually play at night with few or no others players and they all know I never take insurance, for example, so waiving off insurance won't count as a stand on my card instead.

    I've never seen the continuous shuffling machine, but it certainly sounds nefarious!
    My wife and I play a lot of Pai Gow, and a few years ago, it was a very ritualistic game, which included rolling a die to see who gets the first cards. It was much slower, too.
    Now it's all computer, and while they alternate between two automatically shuffled decks, the computer knows exactly what is in each hand. The dealer can punch a button, and tell you the "house way" to play your cards, without seeing them.
    Yeah, the game plays much faster than it used to, therefore more income for the casino, but the computer knowing what's in your hand is just creepy!

      Yeah, continual shuffling machines are bad news. I won't put it past the casino to use them to cheat players. If people would just stop playing on them, they would go away. But, at some smaller casinos mid-morning on a weekday, these are the only machines available.
