Me when I saw the title: Why is there a song about cars
After listening to it for 1 min: It's kinda catchy
Me after the whole song: *Автомовили, Aвтомобили*
Ngl i was like meh this soviet propaganda about cars
Relatable, Soviet pop music is catchy as hell...
@@rayh6118 after looking at how America has been destroyed by cars, they were right. There's a lot of sacrifices made in the name of cars in the US. Technology that should be liberating was used to make everything worse. You have no public transport in the US to speak of and cars are mandatory for survival. Also suburban sprawl was entirely dependent upon the automobile.
@@Makron5 Yeah, car dependency sucks. There should be more places where people have the option to ride a bike safely or take public transport, but also still be able to have a car if they need/want one.
@@dialupdude It reminds me that LegalEagle video where he explains that car companies lobbied the US government to make jaywalking an offence, to discourage people from even WALKING. And I have been told in many largest US cities, it's basically impossible to walk around because many streets end up with no walkway, making impossible to go across down without jaywalking.
As a car enthusiasts, this suprised me that there is a song about cars in the soviet union, nice.
We have songs about everything
why would that even surprise you?
there were plenty of car enthusiasts and racing was pretty popular in the warsaw pact. the old air cooled skodas actually sold fairly well in western europe, where they were considered a poor man's porsche. rally racing was popular, with both lada and skoda competing in international competition, and there were even internal open wheel and drag racing events. the soviets pushed engineering VERY hard and consequentially auto racing was funded by the state. the soviets built a shitload of cars, too, just not as many as the US did. their public transportation was legitimately excellent and so cars were not necessary for the average worker, but commercial vehicles were easily available to anyone who needed one. soviet heavy trucks are fantastically rugged and capable of getting around in the very worst conditions without trouble. they've won dakar rally many, many times now.
You know the people in the soviet union werent all cold monsters they were human and lived their life as anyone else did.
Why? No cars, but songs about them?
That's what I like about regular soviet songs - they are quite simple, catchy and kind at the same time, no rude words, nobody is shamed, a little jokes and overall positive vibe

its myth, they started to produce ladas in 60s, most families had 1 car in 70s in ussr. My grandfather bought 4 in his lifetime, waited just around 2 years at first, then sold and bought other immediately. This myth comes from misunderstanding , people didndt really needed cars back then when public transport was free or cost few cents, trains and planes were also cheap and no need to travel much far .
There is one scene in 80s comedy (I just can't remember the name, I think there way Dan Akroyd in it) when two KGB, US-based, agents chase protagonists, and KGB codriver shouts - GO FASTER, and KGB driver answers - I can't go any faster, this is just a Jaguar, not a Lada!!!!

comments: *as a car enthusiast, I enjoy this song and Ladas are good*
they wouldn't pass the mirror test
It’s pretty unlikely that this song is criticising or praising cars. The Soviet Union never really had issues with car-centrism since public transit was actually pretty good and cars were to expensive for most people to afford. Most of the song’s lyrics can be interpreted both ways like “two steps makes us suffer but 100km in a car is nothing” could mean that motorised transport is so convenient that walking is harder than driving, or it could be implied that the access to cars is making people lazy even though they could walk to their destination if they wanted to.
You take an overly political interpretation, a lot of people just like Russian music and cars :)

The funny thing is that this soviet Song accually menages to describe the car dependency in modern US pretty well
"мы служим ей чтоб ездила она"
It's interesting seeing Soviet era satire, and how they were allowed to talk about things. Sort of like how Ирония судьбы poked fun at how uniform everything was, while still staying on the good side of the Soviet government
To be fair, the US absolutely had a very similar thing. McCarthyism basically banned any criticism of the US or its imperialism and a lot of critical media from the time is lost.
@@RaeIsGaee two sides of the same coin huh
Much like the US, you can complain all you like about how everything sucks, so long as you either blame some mid-to-low ranking government official or just present it as some inevitable failing of the universe and/or humanity.
The moment you blame the system, you're fucked.
@@manperson5315 Finally someone who gets it. America and Americans really are no different from Russia and Russians, despite liking to act like they're superior
@@RaeIsGaee What I primarily find interesting about the Soviet era stuff is how, as per Russian nature, they didn't just accept that the government wouldn't let them make satire, they instead found really clever ways to say what they wanted without getting shut down. This song is fire 🔥
Soviet song: *Is extremely anti-car*
Viewers: "Wow this makes me love cars!"
It's not anti-car through. The song is pointing how the cars affected the society , improving the lives. Also it's pretty praising the cars.
@@pastille2585 The music video opens with the band explicitly stating that cars are making people "forget how to walk." They also satirize the inescapable presence of cars, where they've overtaken the USSR to the point where no "dust" is left "undisturbed." They even have a line about huffing gasoline followed by the demand for more and more and more highway. Not to mention the lines "cars were made to serve us / but times have changed now."
It also fits with the general attitude towards cars for a lot of eastern Europe. They were seen as far, far more inferior to public transportation and biking along with absolutely decimating communities due to the creation of highways. Not to mention that cars, until the 80s, were seen as luxury items, owned by rich people exclusively (especially Americans).
Hence why the song is satirizing cars, because the mass production of cheap, badly made models like the lasa led to cars overtaking eastern Europe and desperately trying to shove trains to the side.
