How you in New Zealand so long my daughter been there 4 years endlessly visa can’t switch jobs careers nightmare as boyfriend just dumped her I’m frantic mum ! ♥️🇬🇧
I went through the awful rigmarole years ago and am now a citizen. I hear it's really hard for immigrants even though there is a desperate shortage of some professions. Four years sounds a long time to just be on a visa but not being on that ghastly merry go round I'm out of touch. I hope things get better for her. I really don't like it here but am trapped because of a grandchild. So sorry you're frantic
You are very droll. You make me laugh with every vlog. The Poundstretcher comment made me laugh more than it should have 😂 It’s really sad to see deserted streets and empty/boarded up shops. Town centres are just dying a death everywhere.
Another great vlog, loving the singing! Nice town but so sad it looks deserted. Would have been so funny if someone had walked past when you were up that tree talking to yourself. Looking forward to the next one 😊
I visited Gainsborough on a lovely sunny day last summer with my lady friend. The Riverside is a lovely walk. It would have been very easy for the Vikings to reach Gainsborough as the River Trent is tidal at that point. It was actually flowing away from the coast at a rapid pace as the tide was advancing dduring our visit. There are tidal bores through Gainsborough at certain times of the year.
What a lovely oldie worldly place Why no people .?Surprised that the beautiful church was unlocked theses days Must be a very civilised place great find
That tree will be alright in the summer, when the leaves on it. I think your videos are great….you keep things real. Don’t let them so and so’s grind you down. That’s a big pizza…..said in the best possible taste. I hope you enjoyed it…all the best to you and Helen.x😊
James I know you have done the pub crawl on the Barns of Ley but its my home town. Know its had a bit of money spent. Do a tour for us love. Hoping to be up next month xx
Hi James at least you are enjoying yourself and singing along that's what I do .Can't wait for some more hiking trips with Helen ,but still loving your vlogs doing well 😊Ange
Hi james loved the vlog, Gainsborough is actually my home town i was born in morton just outside in the late 60's, it was a lovely busy little market town back then, full of bustling little shops. Marshalls yard actually killed it and the independent shops closed. I now live in the village of Blyton famous for its icecream parlour, and you can actually walk it from were you climbed the tree at the owlet. Keep doing what your doing and ignore the haters, yourself and Helen are awsome ❤x
The vlogs are blimming fab ,,,your both soooooo happy and lovely, don't change a thing just keep doing what your doing,,, if it ain't broken done fix it, love you lot's 😊❤❤❤❤
People in Gainsborough tend to have the lowest wages in this region of England. If you get the chance, take a look around Gainsborough Old Hall on a day when a school party is being shown around. They re-enact life in the House from over 400 years ago. A neighbour was a tour guide there, and he showed us the place on a school day. A very interesting experience. They also still have the bed in which King Henry VIII slept when visiting. Back in the day, everything which can be seen from the Hall was a part of the family's land.
19:42 "So this is my life, 51 years old and climbing trees Gainsborough" James that is pretty profound.. but also very cool, enjoy every moment of this freedom while you are able to mate, when you think back in years to come it will bring a smile to your face. All the best, David.
We were in Gainsborough about four years ago , and noticed all the usual big name stores were concentrated in that retail park area , and the old town centre was all but closed down , but that situation is evident in so many places .
Fascinating vlog James, another tragic story of a town centre dying but that aside, the town itself looked amazing. Thanks for the history lesson, nice to tie up existing knowledge with some new (to me) stuff. Thanks as ever for sharing your life. 😊
Hi James. This is is my first comment since subscribing. I’m a 70 year old ( think I’m still 21) and love watching you and Helen. Have you ever been to Sutton on sea. It’s next door to Mablethorpe. I used to go as a child and went back for the first time in 40 years to find it was more or less the same. The beach is lovely. I’ve got lots of places to suggest, if you need inspiration, which you probably don’t.
Quite a co incidents, I was listening to radio 4 on Saturday and there was a discussion all about that period in history. Love Count Arthur by the way 😅
Very cool tour, a little of everything. Loved the inside of the church, beautiful! Yes, you'll have to come back one day and tour the inside of the old town hall. You'll have to keep your eyes peeled for a better climbing tree. I related to your telling of the protestants leaving England for America for religous freedom. I know a lot of my ancestors came to America from the UK. I have about 6% Scandanavian dna so it must be from those coming to the UK back in the day. Your editing has payed off with another fine video.👍Thanks James
Ar 05.21 that's not bad at all for that food & drink - £5.60. Lady Jane Grey - didn't she rule for something like 9 days? Yeah, that tree was definitely underwhelming! lol Does it feel weird when Helen isn't there?
Excellent video James, enjoyed that, interesting though that i didn''t recall seeing anything that you filmed on my brief visit back in 2017 ! As a fan of football's history & heritage (especially outisde of the Big league) Gainsborough Trinity FC is a must do ground for 'groundhoppers' as it holds the record as the "The Oldest Ground In The World Used By A Single Team" Trinity having played there for just over 150 years since being formed in 1873. "The Northolme" also saw the team play in the Football League from 1893 till 1912 but despite a couple of attempts to get voted back in during the following decade, the club never returned and these days play in the 7th tier of English Football in the Northern premier League. The ground was also rated at No:27 in Mike Bayly's hugely popular and highly respected "British Football's Top 100 Greatest Grounds ... just thought you'd like to know what you could have seen (or won!)
Good to hear a shout out (hate that phrase) for Count Arthur Strong- such a brilliant comedian! And unlike that tree, he is very silly, in the best possible way 😊
The Trent is tidal as far as Gainsborough, and is still navigable by smaller seagoing ships. So if Sweyn Forkbeard was a competent mariner he could have reached Gainsborough without having to fight the current. It's possible to travel on to Nottingham and beyond, but you need to power your way to it.
Another absolute banger of a video James, loved it mate. Found the history on Mr Forkbeard interesting! Pizza 🍕 at the end looked decent pal and hope you had a decent night there 🤞 …. Smithy
We used to keep a touring caravan in the site behind The Waterfront. Spent many a boozy afternoon there. Also, The White Horse just a bit further down the road is worth a visit.
Hi James, like you I loved bacon, sausage, deep fried fish and chips. In my later life I am now suffering the consequences as I am reaping the rewards. High blood pressure and other ailments resulting from my previous diet. Now have to stay away from processed foods, restaurant meals, etc. Now have plenty of fresh veggies, fruit, nuts and home cooked meals with no salt. Just a bit of advice that might help yo live a longer life. Love your videos!
Great bit of history about the Sweyn Forkbeard! Best Spoons name ever. I'm in Lincolnshire in a couple of weeks, feel tempted to go there for a pint now. Great upload, thanks for taking the time to do it.

As far as motorbikes in Matlock are concerned…my ex-wife and myself did exactly what you did (same pubs/cafe) and there was loads of pensioners on bikes who were causing mayhem as they’d bought a bike with their retirement fund and they had problems controlling/keeping the damn things in a straight line…🤣 Not so much ‘mr. silly Arms’ as long walk for nowt?
Didn't you know that Matlock Bath has been a mecca for motorcyclists for decades? You can't go to Matlock and complain about the bikers. They are the ones gobbling up the fish and chips, playing the arcades and filling the pubs (whilst drinking 0% of course) and keeping the Matlock Bath economy alive. If you go in the summer it will be lined with bikes one end to the other, despite the Police joy killers in attendance. Granted some exhausts are a bit loud - the older you get the quieter your exhausts get.....I used to run race pipes on my bikes but only run standard quiet ones now.

Why did old Forkbeard’s reign only last five weeks then? Why did it not stay the capital?
Great video as always regards Howard from Cyprus 🎉🎉
Thank you Howard

I assume there’s some out of town supermarket/ outlet where people shop now 😬
any Danish heritage left? apart from pastries . Wiki says Henry 8th and Catherine Howard stayed there at the Old Hall as well, until she lost her head
Hee hee @ The Range comment .I totally agree James. Bling Bling.😎
Gainsborough has two railway stations, Lea Road and Central, if they're still open.

He's one of my favourites
Another good video
Going by this video's title, I thought this video was going to be about Eboracum (York) ;-)
Tree climbing is for t'young 'uns.
Surprised it was encouraged and not fenced off for your "safety" these days !
The shortest reigning monarch was Lady Jane Grey who ruled for only 9 days. the 9 day queen
