Welcome to my Channel,
My name is James and I live full time in my tiny van, however this is not just a van life channel. I enjoy travel, food and drink and making videos 🙂
When I turned 50 I decided I’d had enough of the rat race and working long hours just to pay rent and bills, life was passing me by and I needed a drastic change.
FAQ
Where is Helen?
Helen has a responsible full time job and two children so unfortunately she can’t join me on every trip. I really wish she could.
What equipment do you use?
My vlogging camera is a GoPro Hero 9 but I also use my pixel 6a phone and Lumix G80 camera for other footage
For editing, I used Premiere Pro on an old laptop but I’m saving to buy a more powerful computer.
Do you have children?
Yes I have a 6yr old daughter who lives with her mum but I see her quite a lot. I don’t usually put her on the vlogs and if I do, I block out her face for privacy reasons. I also have a grown up son.
How do you fund your lifestyle?
I don’t need as much to live these days since going full time van life but I receive a small percentage of income from the ads that TH-cam put on the videos.
Why the sponsored videos?
I only accept sponsorship from companies I use and trust, this is my fulltime job and my income, it’s how I support my family. (I have Patreon if you prefer videos with no ads).
How do I contact you?
Please contact me here: james@bythecurb.co.uk
Wow. That poem . .. never heard of him before .. every school kid should hear that poem and learn .. ❤
His is a tragic story. He was killed just one week before the war ended. Can't remember if I mentioned that
My grandad who was 55 at the time was killed 2 weeks before the end of the first world war , it was a bit of a lottery who came back ,sad but true..We owe them everything !
The van singing ! Brilliant, there's not much that cheers me up these days... that certainly did ! 🙂👍🏻
Only me again James and Helen. At 78 years of age myself you are both re educating me. I have ordered my Marcus Auralius book from the Library and I have just listened to your "Owen" poem which I found very touching. Thank you.
Helen always looks like she is on a mission 😂😂
Part of the charm of your channel is how Helen describes interesting facts in a dramatic fashion. Even finding a pub is an opportunity to be surprised in a dramatic way !!
Great video as always! I complained to my Dad when the 1/2p went up to a 1p. He told me not to complain about it to him and suggested I write a letter to Margaret Thatcher instead, so I did! I got a reply from 10 Downing Street telling me that The Prime Minister thanks me for my letter. The sweets still remained 1p but I tried for all children my age.
Wow!!!! That is such an amazing story! Fantastic 🤩
Thank you for taking me on another incredible journey. That was a WW1 hero
Thanks for the poem ,you read it beautifully , you can’t imagine what those lads went through .
Hello from New Zealand Helen and James, been here for 22 yrs ,,, but a Brit and proud of it.
Hello from Florida, been here for 20 years but a Brit and proud of it too.
Your boogeying in the car brightened up my day James, as did your perplexed, scathing look at the banana microphone that Helen shoved in front of you while you were driving....🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the poem, I had never heard it before. Thanks to all who fought for us they will never be forgotten. The singsong was hilarious well done both. X
You read that poem out beautifully. ❤️
Thank you, I felt a bit silly but it's an important poem
@@bythecurb Don’t think that way. It is important that we remember. I have about a dozen lost in the First World War and will be visiting their grave this year. Some are missing, killed in action and their names are on various memorials. ❤️
Hi Helen and James..another nice restaurant I would recommend in Chester is La Fattoria..it's on Lower Bridge st..it's the place to celebrate..the staff rattle pan lids etc for special occasions and sing to you..😯🤣x..you walked past it on your way back to your van..😉
Ah James, I knew you had depth. Good on you for reading Wilfred Owen.
Thank you 😊
Very sad story about Wilfred. Who of us these days would unselfishly die for one’s country, probably not many when you consider the unjust conflicts we get involved in these days. Well done for reading the poem, moving indeed 👍
lol at James…. I knew exactly what you meant when you said (under your breath!) “ooh goodness me!” at 06:04 … it really did make me chuckle! My actual words were… “Struth!’… She was TALL!!!”
Once again Helen, you looked amazing in you recently purchased Hat… it really does suit you.
Keep these amazing Vlogs coming guys - and if I don’t write to you before you go to the coast with your daughter - I just want to wish you a truly fantastic time together…
I’ll see thee!
Thank you 😊❤️
I was obsessed with that poem when I was in high school in the early 80s and have never forgotten it, still makes me very emotional, boys forced to be men way before their time, real heroes ❤ love your vlogs 👍🏻
Thank you 😊
Come back!
Stay here which is spooky enough, then we will get you to stay at My Most Haunted Hotel x
Powerful poem about the folly of war... it's only attractive to the young and inexperienced; never to the poor buggers -- civilian and soldiers -- who have to survive it. Thanks for sharing your visit; you both are always delightful.
OMG the wearherspoons looks like a 1970s Dole Office and the nob who shouted has only just left the Q 😊
To hear that poem breaks my heart. So many gave their life for this country but we are giving it away day by day. Great videos. Thanks.
💯% true
Well done son reading poem could hear your emotions 👏 👍🏽
Thank you so much for reading the poem🎉 I am so grateful to here a northern man appreciate that loss of our brothers xx❤
I was really gasping while Helen had your pint. I was in tears at Dulce Et Decorum Est.
And the officer class and the Royals’ one and all received and still receive chests fulls of shiny medals whilst the brave poor soldiering class received dull head stones. I served in the Royal Horse Artillery back in the 70s by the way. Great vlog as always xx
Thank you Lee
Wilfred Owen studied him in school for o level English literature still have the book ( a choice of poets ) to this day that was many moons ago ...the old lie ...it is sweet and glorious to die for one's country. The grease war poet ever . Grace from Belfast.
The poem brought me to tears. So many youth today have no respect for anyone or a glimmer of understanding regards the plight of past and present soldiers. Perhaps your video will change some young viewers' perspective on this situation. Thank you for showing emotion - I think it's important. Jacket looks smart.
Thank you
Wow the poem was amazing and so well read, felt the emotion thank you for that ❤ Brings to light how they suffered for us
Heyup James n Helen . Wilfred Owen one of the old Tommies along with Tommy Atkins of course . Good day out with you today . Keep em coming. 5stars . Cya . .
Oswestry is Croesoswallt in Welsh. When wandering around historical towns its worth having a look at streetnames as they raise awareness of some history.
I remember at school we learned "Futility" by Wilfred Owen. It's still in my head 50 years later.😪
A LOVLY POEM READ BEAUTIFULY WELL DONE MATE YOU DESERVE A BEVI 😊
Loved the jacket very dapper 😍 bargain buy and you reciting the poem was very very moving, kids these days are too entitled and don’t know what hardship was in those days 😞 Helens taste in music sounds like my Spotify playlist 😂
No disrespect to Susan Calman but if it was replaced with your trips and banter they might get somewhere . Very emotional tribute to a great poet it was truly at the right time with all the injustice happening around us .I wish you well on the future and your trip to Bridlington see thee !
Thank you 😊
Aye up...Helens twin again,in the market red outfit...she's setting trends.🤣
Cannot beat 80s music...love it 👌
You guys really cheer me up such a lovely couple van karaoke was hilarious 😂
Really enjoyed it ❤ loved the van karaoke 😂 love you two xxxxxxx
Next time you're in Chester...
Free and quiet parking in River Lane next to the cemetery.
Amazing food at Chez Jules (lunchtime offer).
If you like old pubs try The Boot Inn (up on the rows)
You won't be disappointed.
Just want to say thank you for reading that poem, I’d never heard it, and well it’s a beautiful piece of writing, and as they say, it proper hit me in the smalls…
That jacket really suits you James, maybe adopting the attire of Alfred Wainwright would add a certain sartorial elegance to your hill walking 😄 There is something very British and stoic about Tweeds in all weathers. Really enjoyed this trip thank you, all the best to you both, David x
Thank you David, I think I can pull that off now I'm getting older 😊
Such a Powerful poem you two.. made the hairs on my arms stand up.🙂🫡
just lovely, and i remember the Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon lessons in English class back in the day,war was horrendous, but was brought to life by these wonderful poets,RIP all that fought for our freedoms
Your recital of the poem was very moving and you read it with true passion and meaning well done James
Thank you 😊❤️
Fab vlog ! Helens outfit looks great ,she always walks with her head down 😊that poem is so deep and haunting very well written 💛
as you read that poem, I'm covered in goose bumps.... really moving
Love how posh that bloke is ,Helen is lovely.great video
Thank you
The restaurant looked lovely
Can't wait to see more guys 😊
I love the way you read that beautiful poem.
You two belong together in so many ways .
Beautiful area, very interesting.
Thank you 😊
Thank you 😊❤️
Kids as a rule have no idea what these men went through !, they are here because of them !!
Great vid guys !!, and respect ❤
To fight and risk your life for your own country you have to love your country first. Perhaps some of these kids don’t love their country which also means they won’t respect him for fighting for it
@@cultfiction3865
The kids then didn't have much choice my friend !, but I know they did it for their mates and family in their own town !, village !, culture war ??, they're fighting now for the same thing !! Country or not !!
@@andysneddon3615 But your friends, family and town and paying tax to the country so if you are fighting for them then surely you are fighting for your country. A better idea would be to take your family and friends and flee to somewhere safe instead
Great video, beautiful poem , 2 brilliant people ❤❤
Love watching your trips you are such a nice couple can’t wait for the next one, if you visit Chester again a walk round the walls is well worth it
I've remembered that phrase all my life and never knew where it actually came from. Thank you for that, it's made me realise why it was written. Xx
Beautiful .. a lovely respect to a brave soldier , my father was an active conscripted soldier in Angola from 1962 -65 fighting for the Portuguese army to liberate Portuguese settlers who where being killed there. He was a 22 year old man at the time , the pain & loss on both sides .. I can only imagine, my dad doesn’t talk about it i ask him and he does engage with me but I’m respectful to him what I ask him .. love you dad .. & thanks James for the ultimate respect you gave.
Thank you
Hiya James and Helen love watching you both its like a ray of sunshine always always put a 😊on my face ..... Loving your red coat and hat Helen and James looking smart in jacket ...... Loved all the info on Wilfred Owen and Oswestry thinking i will definitely have to pay it a visit for sure ❤..... OMG your meal looked delicious 😋💯 for sure ..... Take Care both of you .....😊😊
Thank you Alison
It's good to see you've got a good appetite.
It looked bloody lovely.
My old primary school was directly connected to Craiglockhart hospital where Wilfred and Siegfried Sassoon were sent.
Your reading of the poem that I looked up just before, made me tear up..
The ling a long disco was the best bit.
Then you finished up in hubby's home town! Great video! Cheers both 😃💜
Thank you 😊❤️
Fabulous video as always. Loved the singing n the van! Very moving poem by Wilfred Owen. He was educated in Birkenhead & lived in Tranmere where I live. ❤
Another great vlog, loving all these towns and the history, very moving poem, both my grandmothers lost a brother in the battle of the Somme, one 19 and the other 23. That Wetherspoons was a shocker, they are normally nice old buildings repurposed. Loved the singalong, doesn't get better than ghe 80,s 😊
So many young lives were lost. Such a terrible waste.
Great poem, I could understand after the read why you admire Wilfred Owen. And then, music, great duet you two, looked like so much fun. Great find with the jacket, you look quite dapper and Helen was looking quite chic in her's. What a lovely end to your week together. Good company, lovely sights and delicious foods. I will look forward to your next, most likely solo adventure. Take care now.
Thank you, got another joint one coming on Sunday which is quite different as we stayed in a hotel, now I'm back on the road alone again.
James as always Brilliant keep up the good content. 👍👍👍

Thank you 😊❤️
My garlic crisps came today..ohh my lord unreal !! {thumbs up emoji thingy !! } 😁
Brilliant. They are fantastic
@@bythecurb My mrs [300lbs] loves them she'd nailed 6 bags before i got home from work.
Another great video with you both. And enjoyed your renditions of the 80 s hits.
Keep up the good work. 👍 best wishes from northern Thailand 🇹🇭
Thank you 😊
I went to Oswestry once to buy a bike, that was it, never went around it .
I agree, that spoons is a bit 60s type building.
Excellent poem as well. As Helen said, boys went to war at that time, my granddad signed up at 14 and went, luckly he made it back then went back in 1939 and survived the Lancastria sinking.
Thanks for reading that beautiful poem x
That restaurant looked fab, thanks guys for your time and effort very interesting ❤❤❤❤
Never heard of that poem before, nore the guy who wrote it. Brings it all home how lucky we all are. Amazin vid mate.
Thank you
I can't help but think how much James looks like Paul Carrick 🙂
6:04 = Oh hello!
Your videos remind me of what it's like to be part of a couple. Something I have not experienced in the last 20 years. I love to watch couples and families enjoying life, but don't feel sorry for me. I am happy and content in my single life. You two lovebirds enjoy your adventures, and let's have a bit of cheeky snogging now and again. ilona
Haha that's ilona. More snogging in future 😂😉
I've never forgotten (having once visited Arlington Military Cemetery in the USA) how moved I was by the inscription on the main memorial to all the fallen servicemen (quote) "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE" and your sensitive reading of Wilfred Owen's poem reminds us all of the very brutal reality of that fact (😢💔)...
On a lighter note, thanks again "Jamlen" for inviting us to follow you both on your pre-Easter VanLife travels 😍🍻 (It has been a WONDERFUL Week of armchair travel for us too! 🛋️✨) - LOVED the Van Cab Karaoke with the' bruised banana' 🍌😆! & glad to see you made a brief return trip to Chester for eats 👍✨ (Don't forget our tradional Midsummer Parade here, in June 🌞and Winterwatch/Roman Saturnalia, in December 🌛🌜). "Si Thee."
Thank you, we will keep visiting Chester, we really like it 😊
A superb vlog & well done James reading that poignant poem after being rudely interrupted
That poem riminded me of my grandfather corporal william sutton killed in action in italy age 34 ,after being wounded in north africa and taking part in several desert campaigns .
Most kids have no respect no surprise what happened at the reading you gave.
On a brighter note loved the vlog mate ,helen lookd beautiful usual and you looked 😮smart in your new jacket. 😉
Thank you John. Sorry to hear about your Grandfather ❤️
Another brilliant Vid there, was good seeing you two patting about singing. Keeping it real as always. Have a good week both off you.
Thank you 😊❤️
Cheers, go Helen
Caught up on a few of your vlogs Jimmy, like you, I love the history and architecture of the places you visit. Helen is always ahead of you, then waits til you catch up, but I understand that's just an age issue, I have it myself! Some great pubs too!! You'd never get the array of drinks in Ireland as in England, but then when you have legendary Guinness, what else comes close? Blessings from Belfast.
Thank you, I came to Belfast a few years back and really liked it. Will come back soon.
Always enjoy your videos , you two are a match made in heaven ......lol
Thank you 😊❤️
Thank you for the vidio Helen and James just loved it xx
Lovely video as usual a joy to watch. I Wish more people were like you two.
😀
A new subscriber from Ireland ☘️☘️ born in Yorkshire brought up in Ireland, absolutely love your sense of humour and your accents . Enjoying getting to know the towns & villages you’re visiting. Hope you both come to Ireland some day .
Thank you, we'd love to come to Ireland. Helen has family over there.
Brilliant 😂 loved it all guys.
EY-UP James and Helen, thanks for letting us come along again, I’ve been to Chester to see the horse racing, glad to see more of the town in your vid. I don’t think the youth would be so “hobby” if this country brought back National Service. Safe travels, see ya next time time. 🤝👍
GOBBY 🫣
I know it’s a fair trek for you guys, but you’ve got to have a couple of days in and around Cardiff, you will love it 👍🍺🍺
Brilliant vlog. Poem brings a tear to the eye very emotional poem. Didnt know Wilfred Owen before 👍

Well read and very emotional 😢 maybe oneday u can read some more out to us mate
It might be a recurring theme. Poetry with James 😊
Good light hearted video you two are brilliant take care ❤
Great vlog. Thanku. Powerful poem, beautifully read. Xx
Lovely to see u both enjoying life 🫶🏻xx
Take care xx
I paused the video when you talked about the poem to go and search the internet to read it. Such a moving poem, and then James, you read it out and oh my goodness, it's like it came to life. So sad, and even more sad was how those who walked past you at his statue were so disrespectful. They would not be if they ever had to experience what those young men had to during wartime. Brilliant few series of vlogs. Keep up the great work. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Another great vlog soon as you say pub Helen’s off .
Beautifully read James powerful stuff my friend
