Did he learn subs competing against others or did he have mentors who taught him the art of hooking and helped him refine his wrestling? in essence, what's his catch lineage?

His father was a Wrestler, which assuming it was the same style of Catch As Catch Can, the most likely explanation is it was passed down from his Grandfather who was also a renown wrestler from the old Motherland in the 1700's.
