There's nothing to understand, just utter pre-planned chaos, and it's absolutely fucking awesome lol. Also, if you ever have trouble getting into those vocals, think about them as another instrument instead of the leading element.
It's just black metal with some death metal and ambient sounds mixed in. There are plenty of bands like this or at least there were couple of decades ago. Bands like Summoning, Pazuzu.

How can one even mention something as commercial (and corny) as mushroom head when relating to this? Portal came straight from the abyss! It's like comparing the dread of cosmic/Eldritch horror with something as pop culture (...and corny) as Freddy Krueger.
This band's music brings about a subconscious peace for me. It lets something out and makes me feel more at ease afterwards. The band's music isn't so frightening as it is a glance into the dark abyss we all have within us.
This is one of the most difficult comment sections to swallow on the internet. The amount of people missing out on Portal’s genius is nauseating but humans have always laughed and sneered at genuine creativity rather than gave it a chance. Open your minds , dudes.

Alexandre Desrochers Ayotte im not a huge fan of their drummer at all. like. he cant keep time very well through and through. what he dkes takes skill sure. and he is skilled. but more practice i think here and there.

I've never seen portal but I know the mood change your describing. When I saw Dimmu Borgir & cradle of filth that same mood swing happened, just a dark evil feeling that I hadn't experienced before.

I was 54 when I first seen this in 2013. Great stuff. The guitarist with the bags over their heads reminds me of a performance by the Funk band the Undisputed Truth in 1975 in which the guitarist had a bag over his head.
Nothing relaxes me more on a rainy Saturday evening than sitting next to a warm fire in my rocking chair with my lap blanket and my cat while sipping on Chamomile tea and listening to Portal.....While my victim bleeds out in the next room.

For the folks saying that this sucks, it's not music, this is terrible, Portal is not for you. For those of you are intrigued, but don't quite get what is going on, I will explain what I believe they are doing. Portal are playing death metal with hints of black metal (musically and theatrically). However, what sets them apart is that the guitars(Bass, lead and rhythm) are purposely playing in a way that on the surface seems wild unhinged and chaotic, while actually being tightly controlled, planned and on time. The drummer, in contrast to most death/black metal players is not using the double bass set up as the time keeping, but using the tom toms in their stead. The lyrics are cosmic/existential horror in the vein of, and on their early albums, directly inspired by H.P Lovecraft. The music is designed to make you feel uneasy as the waves of feedback, distortion and dissonance wash over you. It leaves you no choice but to surrender to the insanity and accept your insignificance in a vast and often actively hostile universe or run away screaming. As for the outfits, it's theatricality and atmosphere, all designed to fit with the weirdness and insanity of the music.
I've never found portal disturbing, but I fucking love the art and stage proformances and shit. Looks straight out of some satanic ritual shit we were told to fear as a kid.
