Love watching my uncle tell the stories from back in the day.
Chips was a great guy.. thanks for watching…Joe
Amazing that Chip turned down playing live with Elvis…great interview. It’s so good that these stories are captured on film….history.
Thanks for watching 997……Joe
The story about the gun being stuck in the back of one of Chip's guitars took place at RCA Studio B in Nashville in May 1971. Chip was responsible for Elvis Presley also recording "High Heel Sneakers" (Tommy Tucker hit) in September 1967 at RCA Studio B in Nashville and "Pledging My Love" (Johnny Ace hit that Chip had produced a version by Delbert McClinton for his "Genuine Cowhide" album), which Elvis recorded in October 1976 in the Jungle Room at Graceland.
Thanks for sharing Daryl.... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Joe, the first recording sessions that Chip did with Elvis Presley were at RCA Studio B in Nashville in May 1966. These were also the first sessions for Felton Jarvis to produce Elvis. One of the things I wanted to ask you about Joe is whether that is Chip playing the dobro on Elvis' May 1966 recording of the Bob Dylan song, "Tomorrow Is A Long Time?" Also, do you know how Chip Young got that name? I believe his actual name is Jerry Stembridge.
Good info there.. thanks. No I don’t know if Chip played dobro on Tomorrow. Not sure about his name either. He did play guitar on Jolene and take the ribbon from your hair which I’ll show and one of the next clips from this interview.
@@darylrestly8133 Thanks for sharing this Daryl.
There was a great source book "Compleat Recording Sessions" I believe it was called, by Ernst Jorgensen which lists each and every formal and informal Elvis recording session ever, all the personnel and every minute detail, y'all might find it of interest.
Thank You, Joe , for all these fabulous interviews !
Thanks for posting this! I don’t know if any of us have ever seen this clip before! Heard and told the story 100s of times tho! Chip was my uncle!
You’re welcome Jim.... Best. Joe
Oh man, hate to hear "was" Jim...
Do you play like your uncle?
@@michaelmullins1290 I sure wish I did! I do play, but have never mastered fingerpicking. I'm always playing around with it trying to learn, but so far haven't mastered that form. Wish more players played that style nowadays!
@@JimStembridge I love to hear and watch people that can. I'm a flat picker. I play in a local Gospel group in my area. Music has kept me as close to sanity as I am. Lol
I really like hearing Elvis stories from the Musicians who were there. Nice interview Joe. Thank so much. 👍🏻😎
Thanks again for watching David.....Joe
joe do you remember a joint on lower broad called THE DEMONS DEN ,I was sent to another bar to hear a band and got a tip to checkout DEMONS I WENT AND IT WAS A MAN WITH ALL his karaoke, their was only 3 0r 4 customers I heard him do couple of songs and thought no more about him an year and half later I got my sheets for a show and their he was ,it was JOHN ANDERSON ,you no the rest
Agreed bud
@@andymurray7240 that reminded me of a show that I went to see John Anderson at Dollywood. In 1988 he had a stint there and it was day daytime show. Only about 12 people were in the theatre. John didn't care and put on a good show for us.
This incredible set of interviews with Mr. Chip Young is greatly appreciated.
Darrell.... thanks for watching... Your support and nice comments are greatly appreciated too... best, Joe
The hits keep on coming. Thanks again for all these stories Mr. Chambers.
T.... thank you too for your support... Joe
These stories are awesome Joe ! Thanks for digging them up and sharing.👍
I was friends with Dick Dale years ago. He always had great stories about Elvis , Eric Clapton, Brian Wilson, Jimi Hendrix, etc. It’s unfortunate that they were never recorded. Now they are mostly lost forever!
Hi Calsurf.... Yes Dick was great. We inducted him around 2008 or 2009. He stole the show. I have a interview I shot with him the first day we met in 2005 I believe. Thanks for watching... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Joe, ever thought about someone interviewing you. It’s obvious you know a whole lot about music, but I don’t know anything about your history.
Hi Caper.... thanks.... yes I have a couple of video interviews on TH-cam if you’d like to see them. One was done by NAMM. The other is a interview done by The Sessions. There may be a link to them on our Musicians Hall Of Fame website. Thanks for asking... Joe
You're a bad ass with these interviews Joe, very informative, I learn so much every time I listen to one.
Stevie.... I knew I was a fat ass but I like bad ass better:) Thanks... Best, Joe
Stevie; It is a good idea to watch/listen to each interview several times; you don't want to miss ANYTHING.
Joe, great interview, I hope there’s more! Thanks!💫
Hi Larry.... yes there’s two, maybe three more clips where Chip is playing riffs he recorded on big hit recordings with my office guitar. Even a never before heard original Jerry Reed instrumental.
Thanks again for your support. Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Awesome!💫
I wish I would have had an opportunity to visit with Chip at length. I was embarrassed one time when approaching him from behind him, and I called him Jim Stephany. With a chuckle, he said, sorry I’m Chip Young! I just remember his Dry sense of humor. He passed away in the few months after my last time seeing him in 2014 !? CG
Thanks for sharing Carroll... Best, Joe
Very interesting clip Joe! That was quite the story that Chip told about Elvis knocking that gun out of Red's hand. That gun must have been traveling really fast to impact that guitar & put a hole in it. I think that we all know that Elvis was quite a character, and a very talented one at that! Hope that you are doing well & staying safe.
Thanks again for watching Steve... Joe
Great story! So glad to have found this channel
I’m glad you found us too Jeff.... Best, Joe
Another great interview
Thanks again 567..... Joe
2:58 Chip should have written "While My Guitar Gently Weeps!"
Funny Del.... thanks for watching....Joe
I think some other feller wrote that one an he got ANOTHER feller to play the GITar on it. Naw, I don't think Chip wrote that one. NOW - do YOU know how Chip got his name? It's a funny story. I was in the pickup truck with him...
@@rickvia8435 >Oh I know he didn't write it, I'm familiar with the story, I just couldn't pass up having a little fun here saying he "should have written" it.
@@rickvia8435 let's have the story. Short or long version.
Thank you both. Great chat.
Thanks Caper... Joe
As Always another great interview!

What a great thing you've done to preserve such a key part of American history. Thank you
You're the best Joe Chambers! Love all the Elvis stories.
Thanks Anthony... Glad you enjoyed them..... Joe
Awesome stuff… (older) musicians are always so sharp and remember everything… not to mention he could have saved someone’s life by getting someone to unload that firearm
Great interview.
Thanks for watching Fino..... Joe
He's talking about the Aberbach brothers, who owned Hill and Range. Freddie Bienstock was their nephew and worked for them.
Good job Joe .. I would like to hear your out takes this guy is no BS love it.. Thanks again.
Hi Blue... two or three more clips coming with Chip... Best, Joe
All the Jerry Reed stuff is fun to play. He mentioned Too much monkey business and guitar man. Great Jerry Reed songs.
Thanks for watching Jorge.....Joe
The Colonel tried to get the publishing on a Statler Brothers song. Don Reid said no. Don Reid said never give away your publishing. You wrote the song, not them. Elvis ended up recording the song without the publishing. So, this was a common trick of the Colonel. The Colonel also threatened to not include the song on an album. The Colonel was a slim bag, Hungarian? His cut was 50/50 with Elvis. Terrible. An alcoholic and gambler, the Colonel kept forcing Elvis to perform to generate money to pay off gambling debts. He pushed Elvis so hard, it killed Elvis.
I'd be interested in knowing more about that fretworn Telecaster in the background. If it could talk...
Spyder....I think that was Jimmy Johnson’s from Muscle Shoals Swampers right after he gave it to me before I placed on exhibit. Best, Joe
Always enjoyable Joe. Thanks
Thank you too John...... Joe
Love this stuff. Thanks Joe.
Thanks Rob... Joe

Interesting interview.
Thanks again for watching Bill………. Joe
Too funny!!!
Thanks Jim... Joe
Great story! He should have gotten a free new guitar! LoL
Wonder where that guitar with the gun hole is now?
Hi Rick... thanks for watching... Chip gave it to the CMHOF before I founded the MHOF&M . Best, Joe
Great man, great stories from a great picker... Rest In Peace Chip Young.. You are missed.. At 4:50 It seems like Elvis lived in a bubble a little detached from reality, but how could you be that famous and stay grounded... Mac Davis told a story about going and seeing a movie with Elvis and Linda Thompson, Elvis had rented out a movie theatre in Memphis.. Mac said he went and sat on the other side of Linda Thompson and about 3/4 of the way thru the movie he went and used the restroom but when he started to enter the theater room one of the Memphis mafia stopped him and said you can't sit in the same row as Elvis.. So Mac got a little upset and started to leave ( one of them had to tell Elvis that Mac was leaving and why for Elvis to even know Mac was leaving ) with Elvis catching him in the parking lot telling of course you can sit in the same row as me so Mac went back in and watched the rest of the movie... Mac attributed that to the Memphis Mafia trying to keep people away from Elvis but they were just taking orders from Elvis that also applied to themselves ( They were not allowed to sit in the same row as Elvis ) Elvis didn't let them know who to make exceptions for is what i seen as the problem.... Everybody knows if you work for someone you have to do what the Boss tells you or you'll get fired... Like i said it would be impossible to be that famous and remain grounded
Thanks for sharing George.... Joe
The part missing out of that story is Mac was drunk and being disruptive. It was Marty Lacker who spoke with Mac.
⚡️How much different would have Elvis career been if he ‘never’ used ??!!🤔🎶 #OMG
That’s so true for millions of people. Thanks for sharing your thoughts... Best, Joe
same better or worse
The Colonel squashed a lot of great song deals by intimidating the original recording artists & writers in to submission over recording & publishing rights- not everyone conceded to the his demands. There was a Dolly Parton story too that happened that way and Elvis felt real bad about how things ended up but it was the Colonel and not Elvis who fouled up plenty of collaborations by being problematic with the original writers and/or vocalists. . ,he was like that.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts J Lee.... Joe
3:20 "so I kept it." If you don't already have the guitar, did you at least get a promise of the MHOF inheriting it?
Ed... he donated it to the CMHOF before I founded the MHOF. He told me he regretted it. I’m glad they got if we didn’t so people can see it.... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Why did he regret it, did he want to sell it?
3:55 that's not an RE-16!
T.A ….. Just a picture we had of Elvis with a mic. Thanks for watching…..Best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I was just kidding around. Thanks so much for these videos. Such a wonderful experience to get to hear these firsthand stories from the musicians who created the soundtrack to our lives.
I miss the days when misbehaving was seen as just misbehaving.
@@1peanut don't you talk about my mama!
Being in the music business for over thirty years out of my hometown of Nashville I can say I saw a lot of misbehaving going on all in good fun, I never met MR.YOUNG but heard his name and that he was a great picker, My job was going on the road putting up posters, flyers and free records to DJs on the acts that would be performing, I did a lot of what is called package shows were several stars would be on the same bill, My very first one was a KITTY WELLS show in Indianapolis and I had to stay and talk to her hubby JOHNNY WRIGHT about their son performing but wasn't on the advertisement, also did a BRENDA LEE show when she cut the little David Wilkins song COMING ON STRONG ,back then Nashville was turning out some great music and stars it was a good town but as WAYLON JENNINGS SAID,WILL THE LAST ONE TO LEAVE NASHVILLE FOR BRANSON PLEASE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS ,Today Nashville is all about the sexy looks the glitter and how tight KENNY Chesney butt is ,All the greats are gone and in my opinion NASHVILLE WENT WITH THEM,

Elvis thought Chet wasn't into Elvis style music of country/gospel/rockabilly etc?!? Wha?!?!
Hi T V. Chet was a friend of mine. He was very funny but dry sense of humor. Leaving Sam Phillips who was the opposite of Chet as far as being outgoing Elvis may have felt Chet was not into him as much but he was. He helped so many artist/ writers etc. including the Everly’s. Thanks again for watching... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum amazing that you and he were pals. The great Chef Atkins, wow! Did you ever meet Elvis? E. Cochrane? Buddy H.? A million others? Lol!! Thanks for your insight!!

No just Chet from your list. I know the Crickets and most of Elvis’s band members but Elvis and Buddy passed before we meet. Buddy passed when I was 5 or 6.... best, Joe
No
I don't know that Elvis would need to go in the bathroom to take uppers. He could have just popped a couple pills with a glass of water. The reason he didn't want others in the bathroom was people were always trying measure up to the king. Per what Marty Lacker and Lamar Fike have said.
ill give ya 10k for that guitar sir.
Hi Tree..... I don’t think 10 grand would get you that guitar if it was available which it isn’t. Chip gave it to the CMHOF before the MHOF was founded. Thanks for watching... Joe
... Indian artifact fakers would sometimes fake a buffalo skull with an Arrowhead sticking in it. Now we can fake a guitar with a gun sticking in it!
