I like it, even though I can see how someone would think it’s ugly. The tone is the real deal. I’d love to have a jazz bass with this pup configuration.
Thumbs up just for that intro gag. You keep up the antics, Lobster, you're always cracking me up. Also, thanks for all your informative and diligent work. ;)
Sounds great. Looks like it was designed by a crossing guard. Seems like Fender will have a home run with these is they start offering some alternative colors.
Those pickups sounds killer! It would be interesting to hear how they sound in parallel though. They could easily have fitted push-pull pots for series/parallel or DPDT-switches for serial/parallel/single-coil, especially considering the price!
All of those switches would complicate things with little added value. We all know that the sound you heard in the video is what sold you on the bass. I have a guitar that I put Seymour Duncan P-rails in with the rings that have 3 way switching. The guitar has a 5 way fender switch. With over 25 combinations guess how many are used? Five. Yes ,five from the five way Fender type switch. This does not even cover blending in the peizo with those pickups.
It's weird how they just -- missed -- on the controls. Not only no coil split, nor series/parallel, there's no tone control at all for passive mode. Fender just can't seem to just... do the thing.
Honestly I feel like almost every artist signature bass is intended more as a collector's item than as a gigging instrument. That said, I have to agree on the price. I've owned (and in most cases returned or sold) a handful of MIM Fenders and they *always* have build quality issues. I already have a 4 string MIM fender P/J that was modded in 2010 with Aguilar OPB3 18V, Nordstrand pickups, and all new pots/wiring, wooley mammoth ivory nut, and sanded fretboard with new frets. Unfortunately the bass now needs work as the pots sound super crackley and the neck is a little messed up. I also had a 2005 American standard jazz bass that I unfortunately had to get rid of. It sounded amazing through my tube SVT (another piece of equipment that I had to part with). I also miss my pre-gibson Tobias Growler. That thing was sick.
@@adamwalcott_official at the price point of this bass, it makes absolute since to just get an Am Pro II instead. I never cared for active jazz basses either. As for your PJ, open it up and spray some deoxit inside the pots and then them vigorously and see if that doesn't fix the crackling.

The USA Geddy Lee bass seems like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as I guess the latest model only got a limited run of 100 units (but it's only 4 string)... 🤔

This bass looks great with your cartoonish tshirt. These will make studio and recording basses. They won’t fit every gig . I wouldn’t hesitate to play one in church. Let your light shine!!😊
@@jackieclark8253 I agree. I should clarify that my intent was to point out that many players might be asked to play a different bass due to the neon colors . It might not fit with a certain image. In a perfect world, it shouldn’t matter. That bass sounds great. If I bought one , I’d have to replace the pickguard with a white pearl to match the inlays and remove the orange from the headstock . That’s my personal taste.
@@latonyahemingway3752 …I’ve played mine at private parties, studio sessions, weddings…everywhere. They hire me for my sound, not what color bass I play. It makes zero sense, but some people are who they are I guess. 🤷🏽♂️ If they’re putting the color over my playing,I don’t want to play in that band. 🤣
I have one of the older Custom Modified satin models. I love the pickups but I changed the wiring to V, B, T. I also installed (for each pickup) a 3 way Series. Parallel. and single coil. Mine is satin black (I have to say that I prefer the black) and I put a white pearl pickguard. I also got a Squire 70s Jazz neck, maple maple with pearl block and binding. A little heavy but when gigging I use a 5" leather strap made out of belt leather so the weight isn't as bad as it might. (4 hours are easy) I use it mostly for recording. Very versatile and solid in any coil setting. Sound like this one but Mine a little more versatile. Also completely passive. OOPS.... mine is a 4 string.
I played on this bass, quality ok, neck comfortable, sound question of taste, but in direction of good sound. Finally I bought used Fender Deluxe Dimension HH V, and this is ridiculous bass, MM,P,JJ ( 60 and70), HH sound, all in one base. you should test it.
Well hey ...lets all face it Mono is NOT playing THIS model of the bass. It may be the same color combo finish wise but I would be willing to bet he is using his own preamp and the US Custom shop made versions of this p/u ....I mean what would y'all be using IF it was open house with Fender...hahahaha
I don’t think the price is off. If they made sure these were all under 10lbs and had better tuners, it would cost a lot more. As long as the tuners hold tune and don’t slip, I don’t see the problem . Personally the weight and the color would keep me from buying one. If they are successful, maybe Fender will offer another finish option that’s more traditional next go round. A white pearl pickguard to match the inlays and a plain or matching yellow headstock would tone it down some.
Man, I'm interested in knowing what change for you with the hipshots? Tunning mainly? Stability on the tunning? Any difference in the weight of the head?
@@diegoagudelo4912If you haven't used Hipshot tuners, you'll be surprised. Tight tolerances, you will feel how good it is even on the smalles turn, no give on the gear. It's super light too (the ultralite models, not the ones with base plate, those are still heavy). I put Hipshots even on my cheap basses, it's that good.
I have this bass and really like it. Great to play with a wide variety of tones. Sonny T had it on stage as a backup on the recent Cory Wong tour. I wanted to post a picture with this comment but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that!?- by far the brightest thing on stage 😂
Being MIM doesn't automatically make it inferior. This bass would cost probably twice as much if it was made in the American factory a short distance away and I doubt it would sound twice as good. I recently picked up a player P-bass and took it to my luthier who said it was "fantastic!" All we'll do is upgrade the pick-ups but I like what's on them already. This luthier prefers to work on high end basses but he admitted he's gotten custom boutiques in his shop with issues so paying more for American or boutique is not an automatic indication you'll get something far superior or flawless. He sung the praises of my P-bass and said I got a "good one."
Have you ever thought about reviewing the Squier Mini Precision Bass? It's currently the cheapest bass in the Fender market. I've seen plenty of good reviews, and I even have one. I was satisfied with all the mods I have on my Mini bass. It's under $200.
For being such a unique signature bass, I agree that most of these will probably end up as collectors items and not really gigged as much in a live setting. It is so different that I really do see Fender selling a ton of these. I find it also incredibly hilarious that they come with stickers and his signature sock that he always has over the headstock.
I think they are going see a lot of use. Active Jazz Basses are really popular in Gospel, Smooth Jazz, Fusion, and R&B. I also think the loud colors will be fine with a lot of players too.
They’ve already sold more than 650 of these in less than a month. Bass sounds great live and studio… I’ve been doing sessions and live gigs non stop with it.
I’ve played this twice in Memphis (my luck to be right near Mono’s home base) so of course the GC had it. Each time I play it, the neck is super comfortable and the tones are just fantastic…but I always put it back. Something always nags me to think there might be a model eventually that has those pickups and neck that will truly be “home”for myself. But for a Mono fan or someone who has the cash to spare, it’s a great sounding and feeling bass coming their way! I’ve heard it’s neck was based on his Lakland he played before the sponsorship (why they never offered him a bass is beyond me) so it almost made me want to check out some Skylines!
@@latonyahemingway3752 …No…the neck is shaped like a 55 series Lakland he had as a teenager. He doesn’t own a BassMods bass. He played Lakland and Sandberg before this one.
A JMJ Signature Mustang Bass is $1300, also made in Mexico. This hideous bass is a much more versatile instrument for $250 more. You certainly seemed to enjoy it as much as some of your higher rated basses.
This is a pretty close competitor to the lakland 55-02 and sire v10dx which go for 1700 or more. The price is within market spec imo. I wish those pickups were on my V10.
I have a Roscoe Beck Fender, much better proposition, can go single, parallel and humbucking with the pickups. The pickups are Bill Lawrence design and sound fantastic.

Yes, sounds like a fat 70s Jazz. Or an Xotic Jazz. Just perfect. Is the bridge quick release?Yellow is my favorite color but not this yellow. Too pale. And I don't like gold hardware. Will this bass also be available in other colors? Or is there another model that is like this?
The price is high and the tuners should be replaced but I'd buy it for it's uniqueness in tone and visuals. I just bought a bass and have to be cautious about getting another, the 8th bass. The boss might get upset at the 5th 5 string in the house.
Personally I think Mononeon sounded better when he played the P bass. Anyway, between this and Dimension which is the better bass? This one sounded closer to a Jazz which is brighter right?
Hey Lobster 2 ?s. Did you ever get your own MTD modified Super 5. And also How would this Bass compare? Bonus. Will you please review the MICHAEL KELLY ELEMENT CUSTOM CILLECTION 5 R?
I would like to see these pickups on a more standard Jazz bass plus , I have a 5 string J bass plus and I like it . I wouldn't buy this one unless I was colorblind though. What do you think is better this Fender preamp or the Sire?
A cool piece of art, because after the thrill is gone that' is what it would be. If Fender sold this bass as is at the $999 price point Fender could not keep up with demand. It's almost good, but it's not a horseshoe, hangernade, or nuke so almost doesn't count.
If I ever get a signature instrument it will will be painted in an interestingly textured brown color that _some_ people might label "chocolate." But we all know what it's really supposed to be.
Nice! Need to test it with a headstock sock, though. I'm curious to how much tone comes from the sock. And maybe try seeing what it sounds like played wrongside up!
Where's my shades... Wow it's bright.... nice & quiet... i like the p-up's... nice Jazz tone with no buzzing & a good clean sounding B string... shame about the price.... painted pickguards?!?!?!.... lol.. shame it will probably get damaged with a pick or even playing by hand.. MIM Fenders seem to have better quality pre-amps than before... sounds good, looks bright... Fender should offer more matching headstock bass's... got the MIM 75th Anniversary Jazz in Champagne silver/gold... it even came screened, well 1 thin coat but sounds quiet & my first maple necked bass in 20+ years... i may put flats on it.. good demo, i like those humbucking Jazz pick-ups

I wouldn’t hesitate to play one in church.
Let your light shine!!😊
Tonally it fits just about anything…I never thought looks was more important than the player or sound.
People listen with their eyes too much.
@@latonyahemingway3752 …I’ve played mine at private parties,studio sessions,weddings…everywhere.
They hire me for my sound, not what color bass I play.
It makes zero sense, but some people are who they are I guess. 🤷🏽♂️
If they’re putting the color over my playing,I don’t want to play in that band. 🤣
Great review lobster 👍🏻
I have one of the older Custom Modified satin models. I love the pickups but I changed the wiring to V, B, T. I also installed (for each pickup) a 3 way Series. Parallel. and single coil. Mine is satin black (I have to say that I prefer the black) and I put a white pearl pickguard. I also got a Squire 70s Jazz neck, maple maple with pearl block and binding.
A little heavy but when gigging I use a 5" leather strap made out of belt leather so the weight isn't as bad as it might. (4 hours are easy)
I use it mostly for recording. Very versatile and solid in any coil setting. Sound like this one but Mine a little more versatile. Also completely passive.
OOPS.... mine is a 4 string.
Sounds amazing!!
Awesome! I def want to check out the Dimension in the future
@@LowEndLobster but only deluxe/elite, only on this version you can play with pickup configuration.
It sounds KILLER!! and at the end... thats what matters I suppose.
I'm not completely sold on the low b here.
Mono's one sounds tighter, he's great.
Thanks for having a look.
Hey lobster nice to see you review a fender product after that whole gretsch humbucker situation....did fender ever answer you on that?
I don’t think the price is off. If they made sure these were all under 10lbs and had better tuners, it would cost a lot more.
As long as the tuners hold tune and don’t slip, I don’t see the problem .
Personally the weight and the color would keep me from buying one.
If they are successful, maybe Fender will offer another finish option that’s more traditional next go round.
A white pearl pickguard to match the inlays and a plain or matching yellow headstock would tone it down some.
I upgraded the tuners on mine to Hipshot HB7's. What a difference!
Thanks Joel! That one's on my list for sure. I've seen some great mods of em on TB
This thing sound like a true merger between a jazz and a stingray
Just what i was thinking, 70% jazz and 30% stingray.. Sounds amazing, shame about colour scheme!!
Love what Mononeon's doing. Happy to see him with his own signature series.
It actually sounds really nice. I like it. Crazy that they don't include a passive tone control.
That is the most hilarious description
Love the tone, love the look, hate the price :/
I think it’s based on his yellow BassMods.
@@latonyahemingway3752 …No…the neck is shaped like a 55 series Lakland he had as a teenager. He doesn’t own a BassMods bass.
He played Lakland and Sandberg before this one.
I would love to see a tear down on this bass to see if they are the same humbuckers found in the blacktop P bass from the early 2010's
They’re not…I had my tech take it apart and checked everything under the hood
I subscribed and liked the video just from this sunglasses joke 😂 Now let’s enjoy the review
It's kind of wild to think an MIM signature bass is almost as much as the American Pro II line from Fender.
I love this bass, sonically and visually. It's Jazz Bass on steroids with the humbucking pickups. Too bad I can't afford one yet.
The Colours,AAAAAGGGH!
C'mon. No mention of the included sock/damper?😁
Hahaha Bully kept the socks so I forgot
A JMJ Signature Mustang Bass is $1300, also made in Mexico. This hideous bass is a much more versatile instrument for $250 more. You certainly seemed to enjoy it as much as some of your higher rated basses.
1:16 that is golkar yellow, one of unique types of yellow
love watching your channel, please can you review the new Cort Elrick njs 5 string bass i think you'll be impressed by what the offer for the price
good for Mono Neon, I hope he gets rich off the deal. FYI, his original basses were Lakland, inverted lefty 5 string.
Would love a comparison between this, and a Roscoe Beck!
I would LOVE to get my hands on a RB 5 in that beautiful grey/sand color
Better tuners and "normal" finish (black would go great with the maple board) and I'd dig.
Very good sounding, very useful tones but that price ain't right.
Bass of the year by the player of the year. Needs neon green strings tho..
No sock?
It's a "Signature" bass. That's why it's priced the way it is....I feel.
Other Signature bass go for MUCH HIGHER! Good review.
I bet you get a case though
@@PorchBass : Lobster did say it came with a... bag
It does sound good. The pickups are nice. What does Fender do with unsold guitars?
Super clean bass. I'd love more made in Mexico 5 strings
They should have painted the headstock white and called it the ‘Candy Corn Deluxe’!
This is a pretty close competitor to the lakland 55-02 and sire v10dx which go for 1700 or more. The price is within market spec imo. I wish those pickups were on my V10.
The color of Boba Fett armor after a polish =)
I have a Roscoe Beck Fender, much better proposition, can go single, parallel and humbucking with the pickups. The pickups are Bill Lawrence design and sound fantastic.
I am jealous!
Lobster so happy to see all the content you have been putting out lately! I missed not seeing a lot of videos but we do understand what you had going on, my Ms kitty girl passed away on my birthday last Thursday, was not a good day for me , can’t wait for the next mod video
Thanks for your work mate. If you have 1 minute… how do you compare these pickup to the one found on G&L ‘s (2500)?
Have a good next one.
i have to say mr lobster: this bass suits you very well!
watching your videos while unboxing one of the harley benton gotoh PJ basses...the burgundy one😁 so excited
Must… have… this… bass!!
Or maybe I’ll just get a yellow Glarry and paint the pickguard and headstock orange.
Champagne tastes at Lite beer money.
Good looking bass i am in love
Genius. Never heard of the guy, if I’m honest. Will have to check his work out.
Do it. An insane player; plays his bass upside down, left handed.
One of the most complete musicians on the planet right now.
It’s too pale in this lighting, but the bass literally glows under stage lighting.
The price is high and the tuners should be replaced but I'd buy it for it's uniqueness in tone and visuals. I just bought a bass and have to be cautious about getting another, the 8th bass. The boss might get upset at the 5th 5 string in the house.
Love that fretboard.
Hope fender do a entwistle signature one day id buy that in seconds
The best reviewer on internet ! So honest !
Classic Fender sound ...All Mexican basses sound the same. They are solid...
That was a little Low End Laughter! 🤣🤣🤣
Bass sounds good. It reminds me of my Marcus Miller V7 5 Strings.
It does have tone control in passive mode. It’s the mid pot.
No passive control tone, only seitch
I would like to see these pickups on a more standard Jazz bass plus , I have a 5 string J bass plus and I like it . I wouldn't buy this one unless I was colorblind though.
What do you think is better this Fender preamp or the Sire?
A cool piece of art, because after the thrill is gone that' is what it would be. If Fender sold this bass as is at the $999 price point Fender could not keep up with demand. It's almost good, but it's not a horseshoe, hangernade, or nuke so almost doesn't count.
If I ever get a signature instrument it will will be painted in an interestingly textured brown color that _some_ people might label "chocolate."
But we all know what it's really supposed to be.
I love this looks and sounds of this bass. It's the only fender that I personally find interesting. It's unfortunate that they skimped on the tuners.
I'd like a four string.I like the look of it though.
How does the bass compare to the Fender Ultra Jazz Bass?
