    The form factor of the new mini is actually very similar to the original Mac Mini. I ordered about 20 of those back in 2009 when managing the Mac network at the Global Publishing Office at the US State Department. For security reasons the Mac network we used for publication production and administrative management via Filemaker Pro applications I had created had to physically separated from the PC based department network so we connected the PC’s monitor and KB to an A-B switch box with A being the PC’s CPU and B being the Mac Mini. It was the ideal situation. I brought home all the boxes for storing things and still use them.
    I had been using a iMac at home but this year when upgrading I went with a M2 Mini and Studio Monitor instead of another iMac because Apple hadn’t upgraded them yet.

    We mostly use word, excel, CapCut, and our own cloud drives. I’m worried that 2 users sharing a Mac mini will double the system data storage and eat up 256g storage soon

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      256 might be a little tight, especially considering that some of it will be used by the system, so you won't have the full 256GB available to start with. You can of course hook up external storage, but you can't run apps from it, so that would just be there to store files.

    Fancy. And TB5 might have decent speed, but working straight of it would likely bring additional latency to the game. Ramping up to max transfers speeds probably can't compete with SOC l2 cache. Small detail. Otherwise it makes total sense to work straigth of a drive.

Maybe when yours is delivered you can suggest a monitor in your unboxing and set up. I worked at Apple for 2 years and when selling this product we always suggested a monitor, even when the customer already has one. Worse thing is to get a product home to find out inputs aren’t compatible and dongles are needed. This new Mac is great for a new Mac user coming from PC. They may have monitors at home that wouldn’t connect without a dongle. Again just a suggestion my friend. I like your content and find it very useful. 😊

    I wish the jump up in cpu was also $200 instead of $400. A base machine will handle 90% of what I want, but that last 10% adds $2k to the price, and I'd rather get a studio with a Max chip and even more RAM. So I think I'm going to grab a base mini to tide me over, and consider the studio once they're out.

  • @paulharrison8379
    @paulharrison8379 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The worst performing Apple silicon Mac is the base level M2 Mac Mini with only a 256 Gb SSD and 8 Gb or RAM. This is because whereas the base level M1 and M3 Apple Silicon Macs implement 256 Gb of flash memory using two 128 Gb flash modules, the M2 implements the 256 Gb using only a single flash module. This means that SSD read and write speeds are limited to how much can be read and written to a single flash module. All other Apple Silicon Macs can read and write to two flash modules simultaneously.
    I would really like to know is whether an M4 Mac Mini with a 256 Gb SSD has one or two flash modules. My guess is that Apple have learned their lesson and it will have two 128 Gb flash modules which will make it a very good Mac to buy.
    I do not believe that adding external SSDs improves the performance of an Apple Silicon Mac. This is because a lot of important parts of MacOS such as the swap file needs to be on the fastest possible internal SSD.

    Hi Partick, Nice video on the M4 thanks for sharing. I have a MBP 14" with the M2 Pro 16gb ram. I really started to get into FCPX as my choice of editor. I have found limits in terms of raw performance / ram, and so I am looking to go for either the Mac Mini M4 Pro, or possibly wait for the Studio to get its upgrade next year. My editing is purely for hobby work and I love learning about the editing. I have 3x 4K screens, and use these on my Win11 machine daily, but I have decided to get a deskptop mac, as the laptop just doesnt perform enough when editing and doesnt support 3x 4K screens. So the decisions are 1) purchase a decent spec Mini 48gb or 64GB ram, or wait and see how the Mac Studio M4 does and go for that. The Mac mini could well be the best solution for me, however, if I use the TB5 ports for the monitors, then its a bit of a waste. I mean, I dont want to purchase more than 1TB of built in storage, even 512GB would be enough, as external nvme ssd's are so much cheaper. So my theory is this. Get a external dock that can support my screens, and then use the TB5 for fast nvme SSD's. OR, use 2x TB5 for 2 screens, use 1x HDMI for another screen, and then get a 4TB drive for fast nvme storage. Thanks for your ideas and I will be watching your next M4 video 🙂 Great work. Thank you.

    Might have jumped the gun on the Mac mini. M4 is a great chip, but it still only has one video encoder, compared to the Max with two. Whatever other performance boosts the Mac mini has all video will have to go through half the encoders to render compared to a Max chip. Jury is out on what that will mean when rendering video on something like Final Cut Pro.

    Still selling the base config with a 256GB SSD and charging $800 more for 2TB is criminal. Especially when you consider a 2TB NVME drive is about $120 right now. Apple can take their price per GB and shove it! Try again, only next time maybe stop being so stingy about upgrades that don't even effect performance.

    Is this the future of Apple product introductions? From open theater, highly anticipated public intros - to full-length, pre-produced video intros covering entire products lines - to individual prerecorded product lineups broken into 3 segments.
