When you get to the point that you do not want any more line off the drum...... Go out one foot from the fairlead and paint one foot of the line lime green. Nice and bright and it gives you two foot leeway! Just a thought ! 🤔
I would want to verify that the chemicals of paint one a soft material like winch line won't cause premature failure of the line or weaken it in any way.
What do you think about the jeep steel bumper not having shackles? I got the option steel bumper and thinking of getting after market with the shackle mounts.
Hi Casey love the videos but I have a couple of (hopefully) constructive comments. 1. It’s a drum, not barrel 2. The red cover is insulation for the first wrap of line to protect against heat from the drum in hard pulls 3. With the line going through the drum you can literally pull all of your line out and use the winch. With the other method of a little screw holding the line to the side of the drum you need to leave several wraps on the drum or you’ll break the screw and the line falls off. Love the channel and the content! 👍
The first 10 wraps are the anchor wrap. It is covered in a heat resistant layer. Threfirst layer is required for winching and never use the winch past the first layer (10 wraps). The winch is rated at 12,000lbs with 1 layer wound on.
@@Casey250 Good point and I didn’t mean to imply that you should let that much line off the drum as a normal practice but that if it did happen the line will stay on the drum rather than break the little bolt off and leave you stranded. Love your channel and the Demonator is badass, cheers!
Great video i am planning to put that bumper on my JL as well, quick question I see your crew use VHF radios I was just wondering how the Armature Radio course was, cheers
Casey, you’ve probably seen this product before: Cascadia 4x4 Flipster V3 Winch License Plate Mounting System. The company is located in BC, and they put out a nice product. I used one on my JK and now on my JL. Clean setup.
Your key for the winch line is the best way to go the one you were talking about with the with the screw and the flat washer usually fails just saying you’ve got the better system and yes it was a pain to get the key in there on the spool but it’s 100 times better than the other one just an old truck driver who’s worked in the oil patch running heavy duty winches
Yeah definitely looks like you put the line holding key in backwards. The skinny end in first with the notch on the fat end facing up so you can use a punch or screw driver to assist with setting it.
Casey, just installed my warn Zeon 10S last night. Does the clutch lever on your winch hit the bumper when trying to disengage the drum? curious on yours fitting? Thanks for all the videos' and info!
@@Casey250 figured out the issue, my zeon winch clutch lever goes a full 180 degrees to free spool. I guess over the last few years Warn modified this to only turn 90 degrees on the newer winches. I was really confused till I noticed that. hahah. Thanks
Yeah just noticed that. I hope he noticed that and fixed it. That's going to mess up that rope with the skinny side sticking out into the spool. Yikes!
Its not sticking out, its jammed in flat. Thanks for pointing that out. Like with off road videos, I don't recommend following me, but hopefully I entertain you :)
So what I don’t understand, with the move towards synthetic and soft shackles, and away from hurtling metal, why does everyone replace their hook with other big chunks of metal? I replaced mine with a factor55 loop guard that quickly comes off and then I tie the soft shackle right into the rope loop. It works great and no big chunks of metal involved under tension if there is a snap. Am I missing something (which is quite possible 🙂)?
There is a trend to the metalless setup. To each their own. I like my hook. That hook is not detaching from whatever it is connected to. Either the bumper / recovery point is coming with it or the rope will break and leave behind the hook. If someone likes no metal great. Often a metal shackle needs to be use on bumper recovery points. I don't like my winch line sitting open to the elements getting blasted by UV, dirt, salt, snow, sand etc and then it being compromised when I go to use it. I need to pop a rope guard on the ultra hook like my JL and then it's done. Also it looks fancy and I like fancy :)
@@Casey250 definitely to each there own, and good that you are going to have something super strong there so it’s not the weak point. And to your point, it does look good. Regarding keeping the rope clean, the Factor 55 loop guard I have does keep it clean. The only issue is you risk misplacing the loop guard in the heat of the moment when setting up to use the winch. Regarding needing a metal shackle on bumper recovery points with edges, I do carry two beefy metal shackles, but only pull those out when I really have to. Looking forward to seeing the videos from Easter Jeep Safari!!
As well for the Canadian viewers, in my local Alberta area, Walmart-mart also carries the same Pennzoil oil for the Eco-diesel and several times I have found it at Walmart with Walmart regular price matching Canadian Tire's price FOR YOUR INFORMATION. Which might apply not the US Walmarts maybe.
Have you seen the current prices of Warn winches? Some vendors are selling at double the price, last year you could snag a Warn Zeon 10-S with synthetic line for $1600, now the same winch is over $3000 :| It's crazy
So if I am seeing this correctly, the $1100 option winch ready bumper option doesn’t actually hold up the winch, only provides the fair lead opening? Such a bargain. I envisioned the winch sitting on the bumper.
Loving the build Casey, the winch looks good. I just put a Badland zxr12000 on my TJ, hoping to get it out on some more BC trails soon and properly tension the cable. We're looking at possibly changing out the TJ late this year for a JK or JL. I'm curious how tall your builds are, my apartment parking clearance may play a part in determining lift and tire upgrades, lol. Keep up the great videos, maybe I'll see you on a trail, I live in the Vancouver area. Cheers!
@@Casey250 Wow, fast reply! Thanks for the info, my parking clearance is 6’8”, so I should be able to get something between mild and wild in there going by how tall your builds are, lol.
I personally llove the factory look if you can find a used one (they are like gold) - but there are some options depending on if you want steel or aluminum. Metalcloak is a great company that makes quality parts in the USA and is a great member of the off-road community, I would start there and see if you like their styles.
Winch should be 1.5x the vehicle, but also consider, a winch is rated on its last wrap on the barrel. Each wrap you add reduces the mechanical advantage of the winch, so if your doing a short pull, its nice to have extra juice in the winch to compensate. Layer 1 - 12,000lb Layer 2 - 9894lb Layer 3 - 8117 Layer 4 - 7324 So if I got a 10k winch, it would only provide me with 6103lb of pull on layer 4, which is almost certainly under my vehicles weight when its loaded up AND add in possible obstacles / rocks / logs / mud adding resistance.
Holy deja vu. This is the condensed version, but just as enjoyable to watch. Thanks again for the shout out.

Correct you need a winch cradle to add a winch to the factory steel bumper.
So why buy the steel bumper from Jeep for $1200. Are there cheaper aftermarket options?
Not really but I like the OEM look personally. I find aftermarket bumpers start to make all the Jeeps feel similar to older ones. Personal preference.
