    Gin being my favorite spirit, and my interest in cocktails having spiked higher than covid cases, I was excited to see this video in my feed. I've mostly been sipping Corpse Reviver no. 2's so I was glad to branch out. i tried the Bees Knees first and disaster struck as I spilled my shaker all over the floor. About a shot was spared and it was quite tasty. i just made a Gordon's Breakfast and it was fantastic. I had a little speedbump as my wife had turned all of our cucumbers into quick-pickles but seeing as the drink had significant acidity I decided to forge ahead and they worked perfectly. I used Hendrick's to accentuate the cucumber. The only thing I can complain about is not having enough, should have made a double. Clover Club is next and probably an Old Pepper from the whiskey video.

    I'm with you on gin: also my favorite cocktail spirit. Gimlet is my go-to party cocktail. Just so easy to mix, everyone gets impressed, and it tastes great (especially after one or two too many and people can't tell it's not overly complex). And the French 75 is my go-to celebratory cocktail. Great drink, somewhat underrated these days I find.
    Never tried the Gordon's Breakfast though. Might have to go get some hot sauce...

    My favorite mod to The Bees Knees is using white rum instead of honey. Or a slightly smoky blended scotch. Lemon and honey syrup is a base for lots of awesome.

  • @dhawthorne1634
    @dhawthorne1634 4 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    Instead of chickpea (garbanzo) brine or egg white, you can also find (or make) something called gomme syrup. It is a simple syrup thickened with gum arabic that can also create a nice foam on top. Like the egg white, it also ads a silky texture to the drink whereas the bean juice only serves to improve the aesthetics.

    • @ogreenius
      @ogreenius 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Gomme syrup makes relatively low amounts of foam vs. egg white though, and unlike egg white and aquafaba it can only be used to substitute for simple syrup and only up to the amount in the original recipe, otherwise you mess up the flavor balance. A potentially better option if you want to avoid egg or aquafaba is a "foamer" like Fee's or "Ms Betters Bitters Miraculous Foamer". But if you do want gomme syrup local company Small Hands Foods makes a good one that is carried at K&L and Total Wine, or Liber & Co at Bitters and Bottles (who deliver).

    Love the recipes! Just found your channel and i'm loving the dedication to preparing cocktails.
    My favourite "easy" cocktail for gin is a fruity flavour with about 2/5 of gin 3/5 of mixers.
    Example of a about 10oz (3dcl) drink:
    - Aviation Gin - 4 oz (dry gins work best from my experience)
    - Schweppes BL flavor - 4 oz (any bitter lemon tonic or bubbly drink could work)
    - Fruc orange & lemon flavour - 2 oz (you can use any soft drink with fruity flavour, experiment your preference!)
    - Chop up 1-2 fresh ripe peaches into little cubes and add them to the mix
    - Add ice by preference and gentle stir
    Note that this does become a very fruity and refreshing drink with hints of gin.

    I had just poured myself a gimlet before switching on this video. I made a stock sugar syrup from water, granulated sugar and a little acacia honey, to which I added the grated zest and juice of a lime. I brought this to the boil, simmered it for five minutes then strained it into a jug to let it cool. Once it was cool I placed the jug into the freezer for a couple of hours until it turned into an icy slush. I then poured the lime slush into a measure of Tanqueray 43% gin from the bottle I keep in the freezer. It is utterly sumptuous.

    On the French 75 (Soixante Quinze) --
    The gun had been somewhat derided as being not really powerful and of short range. However, it's breechblock and recoil design and fixed ammo gave it a high rate of fire -- about 15 rounds per minute; also its carriage design made it easy to transport and deploy near the front lines... and it was produced in large numbers.
    And so the drink.

    So a tip for extending the life of your Simple Syrup that I learned from the internets is to put a small amount of vodka in it, usually I only do small batches (Maybe a quarter or half a cup at a time) of it so I just do like a quarter teaspoon or twos worth and it extends the life for another month or two. There's not enough vodka to affect the flavor of cocktails in my experience and it keeps you from having to make more.

    i want to add when making the clover club...if you're not as experienced please pour the egg white in a separate container then add...you dont want to accidently bust yoke in your almost completed cocktail and waste it

    I love learning new drinks and the history of alcohol plus you make good videos and you're talented. Thanks to your videos I feel like I get to live out my fantasy as a bartender. Just out of curiosity, have you ever gotten hammered during a making of an episode? Love your work.

    It seems I've been mixing up a variation on the gimlet for years, and I didn't even know it.
    I make my own elderflower cordial and mix it with the juice of a lime and add two shots of plymouth with some crushed ice.

    Mezcal if it’s not too niche! It’s become my new favorite spirit with its smokiness 👌

    Gordon's Breakfast just changed my life. Great new go-to.
    Any suggestions for an Earl Grey-Infused Gin? It's a bit bitter and tannic from the tea so I'm having trouble using it successfully. I'll def try a bees knees with it.

    I'm in quarantine drinking boilermakers. Simple easy drink but maybe you can do a video pairing different beers with different whiskey? Any pairings you think would be good?

    Something different but I'd like to see what you could do with KOMBUCHA. Either tips for at home making or ways to make mixed drinks with it.
    thanks!

    I would love to see a video like this for the whole whiskey family (Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, etc).

    Would be helpful to see a guide about vodka. I have a very large storage of it, but not many ideas how to use it efficiently.

    I have a small batch of simple syrup that i made in august or so last year. Still holds up. Used it a couple of days ago. Nothing wrong with it still
