Can you do a “how to” video on making a Rusty Nail? With the Drambuie? It’s one of my grandpa’s favorite drinks and I’ve never been able to get it quite right. Pretty sure it doesn’t have too many ingredients so it would be perfect for quarantine too!
@@stormee14 ...and a twist of orange. There is a wide variety of scotch, and picking the right one might make all the difference. Time to start the taste testing...
@@svennoren9047 I don't see Rusty Nails with an orange twist very often! That would definitely add something to the drink, though unfortunately I can't test it at the moment since we don't have any Drambuie... I'm trying to figure out what kind of scotch would go well with it. I'm not much of a scotch guy...
I realize this comment is from a year ago, but I'm binging all the HTD episodes so here I am. The Rusty Nail is my favorite cocktail. There are a lot of opinions about it, but here is mine, and I'd argue it's the right one. 1. A Rusty Nail should be made a with a /good/ single malt scotch (or blended if you insist). Just because it's a cocktail doesn't mean you should break out the Red Label. If made properly, the scotch component is a dominant part of the flavor profile. 2. Everyone claims the ratio is 2 parts scotch to 1 part Drambuie. Sure, that's a good starting point, but I've found over the years that toning down the Drambuie and using high quality scotch makes a really fantastic drink. I recommend 4 parts scotch to 1 part Drambuie. 3. Drambuie does limited releases regularly w/ specific single malts distilleries as partners. If you can, pick up one that matches up with your scotch preference and up your Drambuie ratio slightly (3 to 1). This will /really/ help to emphasize the scotch in the cocktail. Finally, I believe a Rusty Nail can only be mixed and served one way and one way only, which is it /must/ be mixed in a separate glass, and strained over one large (preferably clear) ice cube in a rocks glass. Building the drink in the glass it is meant to be served in is a no-no, and leads to too much dilution. This is a drink that needs very minimal dilution, and should be as close to how you'd like the temperature of a straight whisky pour over ice. I really really love Isle whiskies, and particularly love Talisker 21 (unfortunately no longer produced). For a short while there was a run of Drambuie made using Talisker as the base scotch, and it is my preferred Drambuie when paired with a Talisker 18 in a Rusty Nail. Utterly fantastic, and will not disappoint. Personally, if you're going to use a blended scotch in your Rusty Nail you should use one that stands proper such as some of the offerings from Compass Box or a Green or Gold (18) label.

Plantation 3 Star is my favorite daiquiri rum at this point. I add a dash of orange bitters, too. Also, frozen berries from the back of the freezer are a nice garnish. Or you could use one or two nice maraschino or amarena cherries. Use less syrup if you go that route. That makes it a five ingredient drink and with the bitters it may not actually be a daiquiri anymore.
Not quite a 3 ingredient drink but one I've been working on. A few people I told the mix to asked for a name so I called it a "Hatchet". I think its short and easy to remember. Line a whiskey glass with bitters. Place a slice of lime in the bottom of the glass and crush with the bottom of a shot glass. Add ice. 1 oz spiced dark rum. Fill glass with choice of cider. Optional add a cinnamon stick. Down the hatch.
I'm just glad I found another Smith and cross fan lol I love that stuff Also, for anyone watching this, a caipirinha is also an excellent choice as is ti punch if you have either cachaca or rhum on hand. Super simple and very tasty. All you need (arguably) is lime, spirit, and sugar(preferably turbinado) Quarantine drinking tip: make reverse cocktails relying primarily on liqueur or vermouth as your base to Pace yourself through the day and find new, delicious drinks to make! Reverse sidecars are an excellent place to start!

Note on the cold brew: I made it using Sumatra beans I ground coarse, then let sit in filtered water for about 20 hours (10 grams for every 6 fluid onces).
I was upset I couldn’t go out today on my 21st birthday, but I think this video made up for it
ARS RAVENS Happy Birthday!
You can go out... Outside is an enjoyable time. Excellent graphics even on older hardware, and truly inspired haptic feedback! Really poor death mechanics and a lot of grind, though. Overall, a solid 7.5/10
@@RanninRavensight too much grinding to be honest. Hopefully they fix it in the next update along with the dog life span
About a year ago I had my 21st birthday on Good Friday in New Zealand where it is illegal to sell alcohol on that date
Right with ya 🙌🏼
Wonderful. Clear, concise, cogent cocktails. Three adjectives for three ingredients. I do make the whiskey sour and the old fashioned with three ingredients, though, and as you say, they are fine. Sure, they could be better, but I'm a rather lazy drinker. Thanks for a great video, and a great channel.
About a month ago I went to a bar with some friends and ordered a Negroni, the bartender asked if I wanted gin or mezcal. I've never thought of trying it with mezcal but holy crap if you're into smoky and bitter it was phenomenal
I ordered a Sazerac and the waitress said she couldn't make it because they didn't have absenthe to wash out the glass, so she made me a Negroni instead and I was very pleased with the drink! Definitley belongs on your list!
One of the many positives that have come from lockdown - also, thanks to video conferencing technology we’ll never drink alone again!
An AMAZING twist on a Negroni I always add to mine is a little dash of vanilla extract! It adds a really nice sweetness to it on the nose!
I almost want to ask for your favourite mocktail mixes, since I swore off the booze a couple years ago, but I get the feeling this comment's gonna get buried lol.
Love the show, it's great entertainment during this isolation. Stay awesome ^^
Piña colada is delicious virgin style. And virgin mimosa is good too.
This is a great comment!
He has done a few.
So I only recently found this channel, but a lot of the videos where he recreates drinks from TV and movies he has a non-alcoholic version!
Love your vids dude! Gotta add the dark and stormy to the list!!! Good dark rum, ginger beer, lime juice. Have at it.
My go to easy Wiskey Sour:
-1 part agave
-2 parts lemon juice
-4 parts wiskey (usually Jack Daniels)
It's nine in the morning, day 13 of quarantine and I just had the best whiskey sour! Cheers man.
Me: Wonders if this is Greg's version of a clip show.
Greg: "It's a clip show!"
I wouldn't be surprised if he's running low too
Wonderful, Greg!
Suggestion, Caipirinha:
- 2 oz Cachaça
- Lime
- 2 barspoons white sugar
Can you do a “how to” video on making a Rusty Nail? With the Drambuie? It’s one of my grandpa’s favorite drinks and I’ve never been able to get it quite right. Pretty sure it doesn’t have too many ingredients so it would be perfect for quarantine too!
50 ml of your blended scotch whiskey then 15 ml of drambuie
@@stormee14 ...and a twist of orange.
There is a wide variety of scotch, and picking the right one might make all the difference. Time to start the taste testing...
Just play with the ratio to your taste. My preferred Scotch for Rusty Nail is JW Black. I'll use Laphroaig if I'm in an Islay mood on hot day.
Was watching the movie “Zodiac” and Jake Gyllenhaal introduces a cocktail called an Aqua Velva to Robert Downey Jr. Greg, MAKE THAT DRINK!
I've always wanted to see how that's made!!!
There's another cocktail channel on TH-cam...I think it's Bruce.... anyhoo he made an aqua velva at some point.
I was reading In Cold Blood and one of the killers would drink Orange Blossoms. Basically gin and juice with sweet vermouth
Been wanting Greg to make this for a while! Great scene
That's a great one!
'if you can, i would rim it' has to be one of your greatest unintentional lines i've heard
I'm just glad I found another Smith and cross fan lol I love that stuff
Also, for anyone watching this, a caipirinha is also an excellent choice as is ti punch if you have either cachaca or rhum on hand. Super simple and very tasty. All you need (arguably) is lime, spirit, and sugar(preferably turbinado)
Quarantine drinking tip: make reverse cocktails relying primarily on liqueur or vermouth as your base to Pace yourself through the day and find new, delicious drinks to make! Reverse sidecars are an excellent place to start!
His faces kill me every time. The daiquiri face looks like he's a 3 year old trying chocolate ice cream for the first time.
A video like this is very much appreciated during these times so thanks for that, also really nice to see some of those old clips and how far you've come as I've been here from pretty much the beginning.
Having just really gotten into this channel due to quarantine, I’m curious as to how much of an uptick in new subscribers there’s been
He goes into it in depth in his twitch streams. Long short of it, both good and bad.
I’ve tried a Mezcalita recently in a local bar. You swap the tequila for Mezcal. The Smokey component balances really well with the acidic, sugary, salty drink. Cheers! Awesome channel!
My man, here’s a 2(3) ingredient drink: tequila, cucumber lime Gatorade in Tajín rimmed glass!!! If you can create a gourmet version of that share the recipe. I’d love to hear it
This sounds like it would be amazing blended with ice, like a girl drink
My current favorite 3 ingredient drink is a boozier version of your Black Blood cocktail from the Witcher cocktails you made. Its phenomenal. So much so I got a bunch of Star Anise to make an Anise syrup to add to my regular coffee and brew it with a bit of Roasted, ground cacao.
What about a Cuba libre ?!?! Rum, Coke and Lime.... 🥃
I kept highballs off this list
Maybe Coke has too many ingredients in it??? Or things like Soda, Lemonade etc. have too many characteristics it muddles the necessity of being simple ingredients i guess
highball drinks arent real cocktails
I was wondering the same thing. I have Cuba Libres frequently cus it's easy and simple to get with the limited stuff I have access to living in a countryside village.
piscola will always be superior
Rye bourbon, ice, dash of orange bitters, dark sugar cube. Stir. So good.
I've made all of these at home during this lockdown XD but i'd love to see more Fat-Washed Old Fashioned's on the show! Peanut Butter, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Bacon-Bourbon. Could even try these with as a Sour like I have. Love the channel and you're work Greg and Co
I can talk about different cocktails for hours. Especially when I’m drinking cocktails. Just made my first whiskey sour. It’s not cocktail bar quality yet but it was pretty damn good. Thanks for making these. You explain them in a way that makes sense to me.
Good thing liquor stores in Wisconsin are considered "essential" :)
They're essential pretty much everywhere because you can't force an alcoholic into withdrawl like that
@@caspergv1017 Yup, need to keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed.
Not related to the video but - you are one of my favorite youtubers! Keep it up!
Recommenting to say... great episode. I love hone simple recipes. Too often I can’t make something without ordering away for stuff. Thanks Greg. Making that marg now
Thank you so much for this channel. With or without quarantine, your TH-cam channel by far one of my favorite educational channels ever. I've learned so much watching your videos, and I'm certainly a better apprentice "mixologist" thanks to you.
When people ask "What kind of rum should I use?" my unwavering answer is "Yes." Stay safe everyone! Cheers!
Sir, you definitely are a pirate
@@vecchioteschio to be fair, grog (rum, hot water, lime juice) is quite nice. Even for us non sea-faring folk
D H whats the proportions on that? I might make one, thanks!
@@DH-xw6jp if you make the good one, there are several more ingredients, like cloves, battery acid and pepperoni
@@Slommy99 im not much of a mixologist (in fact i sit squarely in the "noob" camp) but i usually do about a shot of rum, twice that of hot water, and a spash of lime (i haven't bother to measured it).
As another pointed out, there are probably much better versions of it
Just what I needed. Wine and beer I have at home got a bit boring in the quarantine, it's time for some easy drinks.
I love this so much, i got it in recommended and for a first timer im actually a huge fan of what i get! Great videos! Perfect to relax to and learn a smooth trick!
After 19 days in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19 I am finally leaving to rejoin my family. This video was great and just what I need for tomorrow when I'm back to being a human being. Cheers
The White Russian has been my best friend during these trying times
The dude abides
Ducati121 Yum...
This is my favorite video of your recent uploads. Even though I know how to make all these cocktails I just love hearing you talk about drinks. Thanks Greg.
Ah, finally! Some seventy-five dollar drinks to balance out the normal hundred-and-fifty dollar drinks I see on this channel. I appreciate the variety.
It's been very fun to go through your older videos again! Thanks for making that playlist.
This guy is like the Binging with Babish of alcoholic drinks
EDIT: Oh I know a new name “Binging with Alcohol” Wait.....
Binging with beverage? 🤔
cringe
I would love to see Babish and Greg team-up
@@hadrienbejuy8217 I would like to see those two plus Brad Leone. I think it would be super funny as they could all just get massively drunk on the drinks Greg makes them and then try to sober up by eating whatever Babbish and Leone can rustle up...
Binging with Barkeep?
This is Essential content which is greatly appreciated. Off to re-watch some of the older videos (or see if I missed any)
Greg!!! Home made liqueur please! Irish creme, coffee, chocolate to name some! We could go ahead and stock up our bars too and drink away the loneliness.
I'm drinking : 2oz Carribean or St Croix Coconut rum.
Add dash lemon bitter.
Add 1/2 oz good ol' Sour mix
I'll like it because omg man
I really like my 2 ingredients cocktail that was passed down to me from my father and his before him.
Bourbon and ice. :-)
I love your channel and finally made simple syrup for drinks yesterday-ended up with 3 750ml bottles of it! With that, made my first old fashioned last night and loved it! Thank you for outlining simple drinks that even impatient people like me can make!
6:46 Two ounces of gin. Make sure most of that winds up on the table.
5 year plantation rum with a lighter syrup(less sugar) makes my favorite daiquiri. the toasted caramel/baking notes works so well in a daiquiri.
