In my experience, the travellers in Ireland are a cocktail of confusion. I know there are good travellers out there, but the guys in my area have beaten up defenseless people for fun. they even beat each other (mainly the younger ones). The young ones however suffer from this, and then go to school and are looked at distastefully because of their older siblings and parents. Today I saw a young traveller girl I knew from school walk by me. I nodded hello to her and she walked by me in this pitiful anger. Her brothers are dicks, but she was actually good and wanted only friends. I get annoyed at myself and others for hating travellers, but at the same time, I know many of us have suffered from them. I'm not sure what to do or think. Both arguments here seem relevant. They can be mean and normal. I wouldn't mind them going off doing their culture, if they wouldn't stop hurting us, the environment and themselves.

@@langlock1566 I also think it's worth pointing out, 5 years later, that a lot of media and information spread about them are negative, and positive news regarding them are scarce. When you only see negative representations, you can easily forget that you can't generalise an entire community. The family that lived near me were assholes, but who am I to talk about their entire culture and community, with no real research put into it. So obviously, my view was clouded in negativity. Yet, take the recent traveller graduates in UCC. Traveller women, standing up, taking a course on community leadership, going out to tell their own stories and lead their communities. There is nothing but good here. Stories like this need to heard more, and not to be drowned out by the negative representation. That's not to say stop discussing the bad, but include the good too.

@@mnemic6969 Yeah, I feel my comment 5 years ago was shit and hugely generalising. It took my bad experience and wrote it as the experience. Racist, insulting and harmful, and I'm thinking about deleting the comment. Just because I dealt with a shit family, I have absolutely no right to judge an entire culture and ethnicity.

Having lived near two separate halting sites for most of my life, and gone to schools which the children were required to attend, 90% of the interactions I had with them were negative.
The 10% positive were the mothers who would go around looking for old clothes and such. They just wanted their kids to go to school, get an education, and get on in life. The fathers, however, kept this from ever happening. The boys were encouraged to be big and brash; the more intimidating you are, the bigger a man you are. The girls were taken out of school upon turning 16 (minimum age to leave mandatory schooling in Ireland), and more-or-less vanished into their new husbands trailer, where they're basically tied down until the family is a decent age, when they begin to get their freedom back.
Yes, wider society often has a poor view of them, but this is generally not without some kind of basis. Telling people like me who have lived next to them for most of their lives that the theft, the attacks, the beatings they would dish out in school, telling me that none of those things happen is intensely aggravating. I would never generalize and say they are all as bad as the two groups that lived near me; I expect you to do the same and not expect all of them to be like the one group you dealt with.

I'm from Ireland myself, and of the many travellers I've crossed paths with, very, very few of them show respect for those outside their community. Some may have a good heart, but none that I have ever met. Always looking for short cuts, and using intimidation as a means of getting not what they need but what they want. The lack of education doesn't help.

Just because you've had bad experiences and they're known that way doesn't make it not a stereotype. That's the thing about questioning them, you have to admit when you've jumped to conclusions.

My father and me are travellers. The reason my family abandoned the group is because they were bad people. They stole, vandalized, and trespassed on private property just to leave it trashed. But when they were evicted and told to leave, they cried and wined like children and said it was discrimination. Many are selfish and delusional, but some are ok people who actually have morals and leave that life like my father did. He left to be with my mom who wasn't a Gypsy and hasn't spoken to most of his family since. He left because he knew it was fucked to pull this shit.

People usually walk dogs through these woods but you wouldn't want to with these people around. They would play music very loudly and set fires and actually ended up burning down many trees in the woods and could have destroyed the whole forest, I could see the smoke from my house. After that they were driven off by the police. This was around about 2014.

The adults intimidated the young girls on the tills and walked away with trays heaped with stolen food whilst their feral children ran wild.
The crossing was a nightmare for decent people.

it's a interesting video and i'm sure there is a lot of good and bad in all groups of people. That being said we had some "Irish travelers" move through town a few months back. They broke drown a iron fence and moved on to a park which is part of a primary school. it was about a month before they left. The grass was destroyed, turned up by the 10 to 15 caravans that had parked on the football pitches for the children's Sunday league games. There was an gigantic amount of litter all over the park. when it was gathered together there must have been 5 or 6 piles about 4ft high. It took weeks to put things back to the way they were before. Unfortunately they had only moved ten minutes up the road to another park and did much the same there. I liked the video and welcome the opportunity to see things from a new perspective but this video may have been a little one sided that's all. keep at it though seeker I love your work.

Then she started to tell us that his mother were sharing the room with a gypsy and that all the family of the gypsy were there in the room, like 12 members and that they were using the private bathroom even to have a shower. She tried to move her mother but the hospital was full so she was with her mother in silence, waiting to her mother die while the gypsy family was all the time bothering. After a couple days the police told them the had to leave but they only full their cars with as little petrol as possible because they used that excuse not to leave so the council had to pay for all their cars to be refuelled. They moved away but not far, and my dad and many of the people who worked there discovered piles of human shit round the back of their building. The company installed a barrier on the carpark and every day somebody parks their car next to the entrance just enough so a caravan couldn't get through and this was no waited effort as weeks later they tried again. Do not tell me these people are 'the cleanest people I've known' or some shit they are dirty people who sponge of society without contributing anything to it.

Yes, but the difference is that barely anyone has ever had any non-bad experience with them. That's the troubling part. We all have had bad experiences with just about any group on the planet, but we've had far more pleasant ones, that's what makes us believe that the shit people are just a minority. But when barely anyone *ever* has non-bad experiences with groups like Irish travelers, Roma etc. it's hardly any wonder why they end up getting a bad reputation...
If there were so many good ones among them, you'd think people would meet those good ones once in a while...

I grew up a "Traveller" moving around the British Isles until I was 18, our people followed the work at festivals like Glastonbury and seasonal picking etc. The term "Irish Traveller" doesn't represent Travellers, who are just British people seeking another way of life. Those folk seem more like Gypsies. There are subtle differences - Few, if any, "Travellers" live on the local authority sites reserved for Romani/Gypsy, Scottish Gypsies/Irish Gypsies.
While Travellers/New age Travellers tend to value education, quality of life and the environment. Choosing to live in forests or national parks and taking part in peace convoys, stop the war protests or environmental causes. Gypsies like the folk in this tend to live on reserved sites, road sides or outskirts of towns - Basically nomadic Chavs

No one is gonna read this but I am a traveller and I admit there is many bad people in my culture . Tbh the things they do are sickening to me . But there Is bad people in every culture and belief , if you actually go out and become friends with a traveler they will be there for the rest of your life becuse all we have been learned is ride or die. Most of us has all grown up with people being prejudice most are still mad. But the ones who aren't are the travellers you see feeding the homeless, going to holy countrys, trying to educate children is a way there not dissing there culture but still leaning ( I'm 15 I get home schooled 1 a week) most girls in my area do aswell. I dont live in a trailer my dad owns a travler sight it's so safe people walk there dogs and bring them here so the kids who are playing outside can play with them.
One thing about my culture is my family dont think getting married at 16 is right my full family dont . My dad bought me a car and said ino your not old enough to drive it but live your life like your sister who got married at 19 . 19 seems young to non travlers but to us that's a bonus . We don't arrange marriages becuse love is love. One thing country people need to experience is bieng on a green field in the summer all the dogs a loose and you and all your friends theres 15 of us walking to the shop.
All I have to say is theres more to my culture:)
God bless all of you prejudice people

Well ..in my home town(arklow,Co.wicklow) all the travellers are dirty knackers. They steal,litter/pollute and are rude af.they live illegally at an abandoned plaster factory which they claim is their land. The father abuses his children and his wife. we often get threatened by them also. The people living a bit away from them are acc pretty nice, me and a couple other lads, we were exploring the place and an old man approached us.we had no where to run as we were trapped by surrounding walls. The lad seemed pretty sound and just came over to make sure we aren't lighting fires. He spoke to us how he ended up on the move due to the recession and how he makes his living. He said that a good bit of them have moved into council houses. However A nearby council estate is known for its drugs habits, I have many friends living there and about half the houses are full druggies. There is significantly less travellers now days as we are climbing out of the recession. I can see why people have made a stereotype as such.
