- In a few short years, singer-songwriter Valerie June went from self-releasing her music to a record deal, rapturous reviews from Rolling Stone and the New York Times, and a tour opening for Norah Jones. But success didn't come easy. Anthony Mason spoke with June about her career at the Gibson Guitar Studio in New York.

I believe she was named after June Carter Cash (Johnny Cash's wife from 1968-2003), whose own full name at birth was Valerie June Carter.

jsun blue its got very psychedelic undertones so I get what they’re saying
wtf you can hear country,bluegrass,soul and blues in her music. Idk if you actually listened to bluegrass but it has a straight and narrow sound you know what bluegrass is when you hear it. When i first heard this lady i just thought it sounded like soul/country which not many people have done.
Rexx Colt yeah, this person obviously has no idea what bluegrass sounds like. Also, they don’t understand that when you grow up listening to a broad spectrum of music, you end up writing music that generally fails to sit comfortably in one genre.
Some of her songs have some bluegrass in them. Some of them have no bluegrass in them.
