It broke my heart when she said that people told her she couldn't have a real job with dreads. It's sad because it's true. children have been kicked out of school for celebrating their black hair and it's so sad.
***** Sadly, it does have something to do with race because specific races have specific hair types, generally. The difference between dying your hair absurd colors/having tattoos and having dreads is that one is actually natural. Asking someone to put chemicals on their hair and burn their scalp so that they can look "professional" IS ridiculous.
***** would you say curling your hair isn't natural then because you have to go through a process to make your hair curly? should curly hair be deemed as "unemployable"? your logic is flawed. black hair naturally dreads. yes, you have to do a process, but black hair's texture makes it easy to dread (I'm not black so black people please back me up or criticize me for this). and, for the record, is a lot different process than white people dreading their hair, because white people dreading their hair isn't natural, but black people dreading their hair is, because black people actually have the texture of hair needed for dreading, while white people just don't wash their hair. but that's a different argument.
***** It is though. because I've seen white women with dreads perfectly employed but you hear stories of black girls with dreads being kicked out of school. it is a race issue because dreads are perceived as okay if white people wear them but perceived as "unprofessional" when black people wear them.
I've been loving her music for a while now, but seeing her talk about so many aspects of her self like this makes me appreciate her art even more. She appears to be so balanced - realistic, focused and hardworking, and at the same time free and easy going with that dream like fantasy flowing about her. And that hair is a beautiful pice of art in it's own right. What's not to love?
Love Valerie June’s Enthusiasm for life, she is definitely letting her light shine, her song “Twined & Twisted” is one my new favorite all time songs (just recently discovered Ms. June on TH-cam) her guitar playing and singing on that song is uniquely beautiful. I liked in this video when she said that “her rings were imperfect and that they remind her that she does not have to be perfect”, also when she said that “she lives in a magical world and that she does not let the world outside to come into her sphere”. Great Talent and Spirit!
I love your accent! I live in Alabama, about 3 hours from Memphis, and I'm obsessed with TH-cam, especially StyleLikeU and I seldom hear people who talk like "home," so you are like a breath of fresh air. I think you are someone I would like to be friends with in real life if we lived in the same time. You are awesome!
what a fascinating woman. i would like to know so much more about her. her style. to look through her wardrobe and also her home. how she creates an interior. her art making. and life style. more Valerie June please!!
You know.... I've lived in and traveled around the south almost all my life and this accent is actually really rare. It's a treat to hear. :) I actually inherited the accent as a kid from my Floridian grandma even though we lived in ohio at the time and she was the only person who had it.
I always have to sit in the back of the class because of my fro and it's not like the person behind me can't see it's because it's "distracting". There's only a few black girls at my highschool and most of them refuse to admit it, lie that they are mixed, perm their hair, and do all these things to hide there true colors and I just want to tell them to stop hiding such beautiful things and to embrace their culture.
you wear LOCS dreads suggest that there is something dreadful about your hair which is what was said by a culture that doesn't understand the energy of our hair ... your Locs are Beautiful

Natalie Ulm exactly. dreads on black people is natural, making them straighten their hair so they can go by white beauty standards is not.

Believe I am not surprised. Even in Jamaica this is an issue Rastafarians have to deal with.

Refreshing, so positive.
I just love her so! The worst job I ever had was a real job.
You are beautiful. What you stated about Dr. King, and all races being beautiful is something I couldn't agree with more.

Uh, nice try, Alice - but the Florida accent is not the Memphis accent.
In my part of the planet Aotearoa I'd never get to see or hear real people like yourself, thanks for sharing ☯️☮️
