    I was a Ribbon manufacturer for 25 years plus. we made calculator ribbons, typewriter ribbons, fabric and film, Cassetted ribbons for typewriters and computers both desk top and main frame, we inked our own fabrics employed 50 people. Our factory was equipped with spooling machines , cassette stuffing machines, inking machines, ultrasonic welding machines, I think I know what I'm talking about. There are or were numerous shades of black ink and several viscosities of ink, several calipers and weaves of nylon . Inks were not designed to saturate the fabric but to held on the threads of the fabric and on the weave, inks were also fluid, ie they would move across the fabric, where a character had been printed the ink would migrate across that impression . The best inks had a base of animal fats. Fabrics would "hold" a predetermined quantity of ink before it would run off, different fabrics and or weaves would hold differing amounts of ink again depending on the ink's viscosity. Ink manufacture and inking fabrics were an involved process in setting the inking machines up. Our inking machines would ink 900meter roll 6 up using 1/2 inch fabric in mono colour , 8 up if less than 12.7 and four up if 1 inch. Multicolour was the same but a much slower process, ie two colour would pass through the inking machine twice before the nylon was rewound. Nylon fabric edges are either woven or hot knife slit, cotton and silk can only be woven. most manufacturers stopped using silk and cotton because of price from the mills, from memory it was about ten times the price of nylon , added to the price minimum orders quantities were required.. now if you are going to test a ribbon test them all ON THE SAME MACHINE, that's the only way to get a true comparison....an after thought, prior to establishing the manufacturing business I was a typewriter mechanic...It's a deep and involves subject and we haven't spoken about spools

      out of curiosity would you recommend a silk or finely woven nylon to get a good clean/ clear print on the paper from say an old Royal HHE? I have the 12 pitch so the letters are a little on the small side. I was looking for something that will show up good on White 60 or 80 weight card stock. Also would a solid color black look better ( hold more ink) than a 2 tone?

      @@davidgiancoli2106 Daivd, sure - sorry for not being clear. I found the silk ribbon to be quite a premium product, which such a fine weave that you cannot detect any pattern on the print, unlike nylon for example. It seems to hold the ink really well and be quite durable. It is also quite thin, compared to say a cotton ribbon. Overall, if you can fine one I would recommend you try it out.

    Have you thought of doing a ribbon colour review? I'm thinking of reinvigorating my collection with coloured ribbons to add a little fun.

    I use both cotton and silk ribbons, mainly for feel and longevity for the price since silk outlasts both cotton and nylon ribbons. Cotton ribbons do last longer than nylon ones. The nylon ones kept getting stuck fibers all over the type slugs in my Smith-Corona Corsair.
    I've been getting mine from Ribbons Unlimited, even though Ian of IronFoxTypewriters has told me to get them directly from Baco Ribbons and wind my own when I had my typewriters fixed. He also recommended saving old spools that you know will fit your machine, just in case the replacement doesn't fit your machine.

    Sara, you don't necessarily need to knot the Remington ribbon...if you have the metal cylinder inserts they work in conjunction with a small lever inside the spool. When the ribbon stops it triggers this lever and automatically reverses the ribbon. Love your videos.

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you- the cotton ribbon came knotted at the end so I just never untied it, but it helps to know it fits in there differently

    • @TypewriterChicago
      @TypewriterChicago 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Though it depends on if you have the metal rings or not. If you don't, the knot slips right into the notch on the spool post which is made for this purpose

    I love Tomoe river paper too. I really like ribbonsunlimited silk ribbons. They're fpretty antastic. It's a finer weave so a little smoother of an imprint (I think).

      It is for sheening and shimmer inks. For shading, you want Life Stationary paper which is also made in Japan and does have a typing paper available still produced today.

    Can you maybe help me with a ribbon problem I'm having on my Underwood No.3?
    Specifically the ribbon drive. Anytime I place a ribbon, the ribbon drive locks up. When there's no ribbon it works fine. It spins freely and is reverseable. When a ribbon is placed, it suddenly locks up and I have to go in and pull on the ratchet bar to fix it. But that only unlocks the system, it doesn't fix the problem

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe your ribbon is in there wrong! I have had the same issue before on a portable. I found that the ribbon was supposed to also loop around some extra posts when inserted. By not looping them, it locked up the machine. It could also be that the spools aren't totally snapped into place so try that too!

    • @ihavekalashnikovyoudomath9275
      @ihavekalashnikovyoudomath9275 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustMyTypewriter I made sure to loop the ribbon how it's supposed to, looking up a lot of videos to make sure it's right. And the ribbon feels seated. It's an Amazon one, so it doesn't fit like the original, but would that make a huge difference?

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ihavekalashnikovyoudomath9275 Yes that could- do you have the original spools? You could rewrap it on those to make sure it fits down in there correctly

      If I may stick my nose where it doesn't belong.... Underwoods take standard universal 2 inch spools. If it measures 2 inches in diameter, you're fine. Make sure that the spools are winding the right way, they advance the ribbon as you type. One spool will ratchet, the other will be free to move. The spools will wind opposite of each other in the direction of the ratchet. I believe, though you'd need to double check, the right Underwood spool winds counterclockwise and the left winds clockwise. Remove the spools and type, if the ribbon shaft spins you're good. If it doesn't, check the ratchet on the right side of the machine. You'll see a big crank gear that has two metal finger tabs on the right. Those should be pressed up against the side of the wheel, sometimes the springs come loose. Hope all that made sense?

    It's cool to have a community of people that can understand what is the real matter of typewriters. I personally don't like the Remingtons just because of their ribbon systems. Why have they done this?! I think I lost half of people reading this comment, right?
