I'm loving this format. For whatever reason, I have the hardest time getting myself to listen to a podcast audio only, but love watching podcasts, or even clips of podcasts. I hope you continue.
I'm glad he did some research on the companies. Fiio is one of the original ChiFi audiophile manufacturer and Astell and Kern was originally Iriver who may be the first MP3 manufacturer ever and are from S. Korea. The pedigree and history of Fiio and Astell and Kern is very legitimate and for people that have been in this hobby for a long time like myself respect both of them.
Love my FiiO BTR5-2021 Bluetooth adapter in my older car. Gave me back the chance to hear much of my Tidal subscription music driving to and from work. Love that thing. Made my subscription offer much more bang for the buck.
Thanks John, very enjoyable; +1 for more of this format of video. I too have enjoyed Fiio products over the years, mainly their desktop dac/amps and they've served me well. Very interesting to learn of their origins.
My first foray into mono Block amplifiers and dedicated to channel is with the new AGD audion Mk three monoblock amplifiers. I am set to receive them on Monday and look forward to getting them into my system and testing them. nervously Excited about it. Thanks for this video.

A big thank you Mr. Darko for all the hard work and time you put into this video - I'm sure there was a lot involved here...!!! Kudos...!!!
Lots of people like having Bluetooth headphones at their desk just so they don’t have to deal with the hassle of wires. Once Bluetooth headphones start supporting the lossless codex I can definitely see a use case for iFi’s device
Very good news/review format! I enjoyed it and feel you both did a great job. I listen to a lot of pipe organ and organ orchestral music which is very demanding. This includes jazz organ which is also demanding.
John, I recently listened to one of your podcasts for the first time and loved it. I’ve loved David Morley’s work ever since I started buying those early Apollo/R&S records around 92/93. The album David mentioned that you weren’t familiar with, Swarm Of Drones, is a release on the Carpe Sonum label. I think you would dig many of their releases. They are the label that was started as a kind of tribute to Pete Namlook after his death. Their first release was a giant box set with many exclusive tracks from artists I know you like. Let me know if you want some of my picks from the label.
great video! Fiio are definitely getting in to "serious" audio products - can't comment on their headphones as I've never tried them but their K7 and K9 integrated DAC / amps are definitely serious hardware for music lovers and are well beyond the 'THD meme' equipment of the past few years.
I have owned several Fiio products over the years, and they have all been very high quality. They seem in general to be fast followers, using existing tech in products with a unique twist. Recently, they seem to have become more innovative and have entered many new markets. Perhaps I missed it, but I was waiting to hear the sound comparison between the 32 and 350 headphones, even though they are not otherwise identical. Perhaps an update in a future segment. Also, I am intrigued by products that allow for swappable upgrades. It seems as though a company that bought into this completely could establish a form factor and then sell upgradable components that would go up the fidelity and price scale. It would also help increase brand loyalty while decreasing electronic waste in today’s disposable world. Enjoyed the video thoroughly and look forward to future episodes.
John is describing LDAC in adaptive mode, you can fix the bit rate to 990kbps so that bit rate doesn't vary as he says. The Qudelix 5K shows incoming bit rate in it's app to confirm this.
Added to this, it appears that the 'HD' or 'Lossless' tiers of most of the music platforms (if not all) are locked under 850kbps. Having said that, I run LDAC and AAC and both are decent.
So to comment on the usage of bluetooth within the household, is that when at home I am running around but I don't want to disturb others or I am on call through discord. I want the audio quality but the wireless-ness of bluetooth. If there is a DAC that does wireless to a wireless headphones I would love to know.
When the first Walkman appeared in London I was traveling on the underground and spotted on the platform an audiophile wearing Stax electrostatic headphones carrying two large boxes of electronics (amplifier and battery?) and a a Walkman in his pocket. I doubt if he cared what anyone thought of the him sporting the largest cans money could buy.
Surely its just a matter of when not if lossless bluetooth is standard across devices. Technology normally trends towards higher capability over time in consumer products. Given large players stream HD content, e.g. Apple and Amazon, there is also commercial imperative.
Thank you for the nice video podcast! I think that there are IEM "earphones" that are similar priced as the HEDD. So price wise, I would consider them oke. I wanted to comment on one of your podcast: A time ago someone wrote that hi frequency are the carriers for the base frequenties. So the better the tweeter implementation, the better the base could sound. It sort of a symbioses affair between them. Kinda FM ore AM radio principle. They also work on the same principles .
There was something wrong with the light in the beginning. It is flickering. It is very noticeable on an 55” OLED TV. Maybe it was changing weather outside.
Please upload more podcasts in video format, that's how I like taking in podcasts. Also regarding comments, if watching through YT on Apple TV for example, not sure where comments & show notes appear?
And that was my point! Viewers watching on TV *must* cut over to a phone or laptop to leave a comment. And if they can find the comments box on the phone or laptop, they can also find the description box! 🤓
Frustrating that Apple TV doesn't give you access to this. Many newer smart TVs running "stock" Google TV and TH-cam allow you to read descriptions and comments by clicking on the video title (with the remote) while the video is playing.
Hi Darko greetings from Sweden. Do You know of some preamps or integrated amps that has HT main in bypass and Spotify connect and tidal connect? I have looked at Primare prisma and Hegel 160 but no has Tidal connect. Maybe I cold buy a streamer but size is an issue. My Xtz 99.26 has discant adjustable bindings so sound signature should not be a consern.
AGD looks to be worth closer scrutiny. I've been ridiculed by friends on the antiquity of my gear before, but a Lingdorf TDAI 1120 as source and pre to AGD Audions as Power Amp to Boenicke W8SE, with a Rega Planar 10 on the top is my target diminutive but cutting edge system... will post how it goes. Got to get the AGD sourced now... easier said than done in mainland Europe.
Hi John, if you go into the developer options in antroid phone you should be able to choose the bitrate the LDAC codec is using, at least in my Huawei P30 i can do so.
Almost every Android phone does LDAC. Unfortunately, whilst LDAC will *play* a hi-res file, it will throw away data in doing so. It's not lossless. When manufacturers slap the hi-res audio logo on their headphones or DAC box, they cheefully ignore this detail. In my book, LDAC is not hi-res capable; it's not even lossless with CD quality. Check out Sony's website explainer for more info. Happy listening!
I have enjoyed all of your videos. I have the Denon DCD 2560 CD player. I am considering an external dac like the Ifi to see if we can get better sound quality. I would say that I am a man that has enjoyed cds more then my albums. After careful listening to albums vs cds I think the cost/value/ sound quality ratio is better with CD players. It seems, to get a better sound from my albums, I need to either get a better cartridge ( mine is the Stanton 681 ee) and or a better phono stage ( mine is the Marantz 2250B receiver). All of that said I am trying to decide on an external dac that might provide better sound quality then the 2560, which is very good. The device has 4 AD182 N-D chips at 20 bit with THD of .0018%. Any ideas to put my decision to or not to upgrade? Thanks Dave
do we only have Smartphones, which can transmit aptx lossless ??? No other devices?? I mean, if i have aptx lossless compatible headphones which device can i use with ??
I have always been a long time fan of your podcast on Spotify, especially for episode with Srajan. But I do have to warn you that because the podcast format isn't for everyone the discrepancy in the views number and watch time of the podcast vs your video might not please the youtube algorithm.
@@DarkoAudioYou could continue this format but limit it to TWO devices instead of four to make the video say 30 minutes in length to "please the algorithm".
@@DarkoAudio 24:46 i’ve streamed all the songs i’ve listened to since 2011 atleast, but it never occurred to me that i was “instigating” a stream😂 sounds nefarious if you aks me😂
The AGD GaNTube is perhaps a bit of a gimmick in my view. BUT class D amp sound quality has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years. And when implemented with the new(ish), faster than silicon, gallium nitride MOSFETS, look likely to replace not only tube power amps and class A solid state, but also class A/B. In other words completely revolutionise all hifi amps including the high end. Perhaps by the end of this decade. I’m really surprised there is not more discussion of this important development.
hello; thanks for the review. I dont know where to ask a question on youtube so I come here, I hope it is ok. On one of your video (for the BW 700 speakers) you mentioned that you never listen to jazz but you made sense of it. I am looking for a headphone (bluetooth anc) to listen to Jazz and classical music (which is never really reviewed). Do you have any advice? I have to travel abroad (conflict zone) and i am looking for a headphone which would give me the audio space when I'll need to. thank you
I have the same phone lol and the reason I went for it it's because the headphone jack. I'm no expert and I'm just learning and diving in this little world, but I think my latest phone, an LG thinq7 had a quad dac that sounded better imo. In this sony I can´t find a "hi res" mode, just dolby and AI settings. As stated above, I'm new but if you throw me the concepts I'll look for them and learn my best. Thanks Darko! Also I might get my first AMP and DAC based on your Schiit reveiw of the modi to pair with the ft3 that I plan to get on christmas :D
I honestly don't understand why home DACs use Bluetooth and not WiFi, I think 90+% of people with a desktop dac will have WiFi and all phones have it! Is it because Google have some rights on streaming over WiFi (chromecast)? As far as I remember Bluetooth was introduced because WiFi uses too much battery but that's not a valid point anymore , the DAC is plugged into power and phone is using WiFi anyway all the time and in theory it should not stay connected all time, it could just send the location of the files to play, online stream, local one...
bought the hedd 2 and returned it. NO sub bass and the overall tonality was very uneven. to my ear they sounded veiled. Micro detail was excellent but air and image placement was just fair.
Lossless Bluetooth could really be interesting for wireless connectivity beween smartphones and headphones while on the road. But then you still might have a shitty DAC within your phone...
Could the DAC be incorporated into the Bluetooth headphones like say adding a Dragonfly Red? But what chip does the format and sample rate conversion from streaming FLAC files down to whatever Bluetooth uses in your phone? Is that just a "blind algorithm" running that does that or does the "chip" matter?
Agd has way more products going up to 400w. Interesting gear For me Bluetooth is outside, frome phone to deva pro... Then why do I have a Bluetooth receiver connected to my stationary system? Because its easy for my wife and kids to connect their phones to it and listen to Spotify. For stationary I dont need losless
Bluetooth is such a finicky, unstable, unsecure, low bandwidth technology. It needs to be retired and replaced with a better format for the current age. Putting so much effort into making it lossless is a waste of time and resources. It's fine for exercising or in car listening when you're not expecting much out of the shitty listening environment.
Bottom line Bluetooth sucks...has and always will. I mean the most popular Android phone Samsung neuters its Bluetooth connections for some ungodly reason to where you get Aptx at max. I'm glad you mentioned the headphone jack on the Sony because I was considering it and nowhere is it really say how powerful it is. Anyways John said why would you ever use Bluetooth in your house when you have many ways to hit your Wi-Fi... It just makes no sense because it's never going to sound as good.
If you own Sony Headphones, Samsung does allow the use of the LDAC codec which is decent........still not a patch on wired headphones with a quality dongle DAC, but it is better than the other codecs currently available.
I like this format but frankly the ifi audio dac conversation fried my tiny brain (perhaps riffing on the niche nature of the product was the point?). Would love to see this format but with conservation which combines the love of the music with the tech (which is why i like the channel).
Unfortunately WIFI requires much more power than can "fit" in a set of headphones: heavyish batteries and electronics. And no, aptX does not deliver 1411 kbps needed for CD Redbook lossless audio. (Not even LDAC, as JD rightly tells us.) Lossless bluetooth doesn't exist today. (yet?) It's not semantics, it's a sales pitch, like MQA.
@@1commentkingand we'll all need new cellphones that support it in a new Android O/S that offers it. Will Apple EVER do anything besides AAC? Do they care?
Please use more of the screen real estate, now you use 2 x 8% (I guess) for the talking heads en 25% to show the products. Turn that numbers around please.
Thanks for your suggestion. Here's one thing to keep in mind: this video is more about the products than it is Srajan or I and if I 'turn those numbers around', I'll get people complain that they "can't see the product properly".
I hope Chinese audio companies realise that they don’t need to employ any app or online account in order to use their products because that would rise a serious concern about privacy and data transfer to CCP who is technically and legally controlling all Chinese companies.
I don't think this format works. It forces me to sit and watch for an hour and simply looking at 2 faces for an hour is boring. I'd rather listen to this as a podcast so I can walk around and do some other things while listening (eating lunch, raking leaves, etc.). I'll probably fire up TH-cam on my iPhone and listen but not look at the screen. However, you are to be commended for trying to change things up. Perhaps you could do it in a more "newsy" format and keep the length down to about 15 minutes. For reference, I'm a patron and this is the first video of yours I haven't watched all the way through.

And no, aptX does not deliver 1411 kbps needed for CD Redbook lossless audio. (Not even LDAC, as JD rightly tells us.)
Lossless bluetooth doesn't exist today. (yet?)
It's not semantics, it's a sales pitch, like MQA.
You understand they are talking about a brand new blue tooth format that has more bandwidth than LDAC?
@@1commentkingand we'll all need new cellphones that support it in a new Android O/S that offers it. Will Apple EVER do anything besides AAC? Do they care?
ok,.......in like it
Please use more of the screen real estate, now you use 2 x 8% (I guess) for the talking heads en 25% to show the products. Turn that numbers around please.
Thanks for your suggestion. Here's one thing to keep in mind: this video is more about the products than it is Srajan or I and if I 'turn those numbers around', I'll get people complain that they "can't see the product properly".
Depends on the product sideshow. Mixing it up as you go along won't hurt even if it's srajan sipping his tea.
To rich for my blood 😅
Love your podcast, however it sounds somethimes siblant.
Hi Paul. The audio version of this has just gone live -- now you can rake leaves.
Srajan is great; always interesting, knowledgeable guests on Darko
