Well... everyone can buy a new axe but... How many folks are able to give new life to an old one, that has last for decades? Awesome result, good onya mate 🤩👍🏼
I just finished an axe restoration myself and had to put a new handle in it. I removed the stain/clear from the new handle since it had runs and I could do better. I scraped it with a knife, cutting edge 90 degrees to the wood, to remove the bulk of the clear and save sandpaper, then I sanded it and added boiled linseed oil on it.
Good work. Finally a video that fixes the PITTS.❤ So sick of these other "restoration" channels that dont even attempt to try to fix the pitted metal. And there are ALOT of them.🙄
Now this, this is truly extremely rusty like one I found just now, I don't know what I'm doing but I spray WD forkty and sand paper it till it's white and now it's dunk in vinegar. 😢 My grandpa stole the axe, my dad told me 😂. Joking....
Hi absolutely love your work , also your banter and bad jokes 😂 just keep on doing your amazing videos our very best to you love sue & Andy ♥️❤🏴🇬🇧
take a sharp blade like a mora or a razor blade and set the cutting edge on the ax handle and drag the blade dont carve, drag.. i learned that from wranglerstar
Lol 😂…..Swedish Fishes 🐠🐟 It’s so amazing AXE 🪓….. I think Swedish natives are so impressive of you. Very cool “Sweden 🇸🇪” Axe 🪓 It’s very cool color! But you’ll add yellow on axe because Sweden 🇸🇪 flag is blue and yellow. That’s fine if you don’t want to add yellow paint on axe. GREAT AXEMAKER!!!! See ya next time 👍
When you factor in the cost of a new handle plus all the supplies and labor to restore it would it have been more cost effective to just go buy a new axe ? Don't get me wrong you did an awesome job. Very satisfying to watch you do it as well :)
That's a good point Chris and I think about it sometimes when I restore an axe. But there is the satisfaction of taking a classic ax and giving it a new life. Someone will be using this axe 100 years from now. (Plus, have you priced Swedish axes lately?) 🙂
It's always worth it to restore a good quality axe, compared to buy a junk chinese axe from a hardware store. Wetterlings are sadly out of business. I always scout flea markets for old good quality Swedish or Danish (DSI, which went out of business around 2000) axes, either in usable condition at a price I can see myself paying, or as I did with the last one, found someone selling an old DSI 4 that needed a little tlc, she didn't know much about it, thus sold it to me for about what would be $12. Took the handle off, which was then scraped and sanded down, probably the original 30-40+ year old handle too, went over the head here and there, really good shape for it's age, poll hasn't been hammered too many times then it was ready, put it back on the handle, oiled it, sharpened the bit and its life is back, love it, quite short handle for the head, 4lbs and a mere 50-ish cm, but having looked at historical files it was like that when it was new. Also have some awesome old dsi hammers that I've never seen anything like before, kinda regular with nail puller but the design is so different, I think they're at least 60 years old.
Best way I found to remove the varnish off a handle is to use a sharp knife and lightly scrape it off. Wrangler star has a good video here on TH-cam on it.
Nothing wrong with using a store bought/pre-manufactured handle. But I prefer to make my own from scratch. However if you have a mass produced handle with a varnish finish you'd like to remove. I recommend just scraping it off well with an old knife blade held at a 90° angle. Go down until you're scraping away a very thin layer of unvarnished wood. Then smooth to your desired smoothness using sandpaper. I like to use it alone in my hands but a block or power sander works too. If you have a makers mark that you like to use, then maybe wood burn it into the end of the handle. That's my technique and I like to date my handles too with at least the year. Then finish it off with a generous coating of boiled linseed oil once a day for a week. Then once a week for a month. Then once a month for a year, then once a year every year for as long as you own the axe (on the yearly creation date perhaps🤷♂️) Your handle should look and feel spectacular for decades.
Whats the difference between being a lumberjack and any other job? You get the axe when you're hired not fired. My wife wishes I looked more like a rugged lumberjack and I wish she looked like less of one.
Why did you spend all that time cleaning it up and then you just sandblasted it anyway you could have sandblasted it from the start and got the same effect
At least you didnt polish it up to a mirror finish. Looks good and useable.
Well... everyone can buy a new axe but...

Nice job on good ol mr warpie. That old handle was legend
Blue and engraving nice combination, great job!
First time I've seen an axe used for catching fish. 🤪 Nice job on the restore. 👍

Very well done. Both the blade and the handle look great.
That old handle was about the worst I have ever seen! It must have been outdoors for years! It really turned out great.
Got to give it to you that's a pretty impressive start to finish but I got to say that pitted metal after removing the rust was beautiful
Looks great thanks for showing us 🪓 👍
Swedish fish funny! That is one remarkable restoration! 👍
I love that you are telling what you are doing

The pits are what gives them the cool vintage look bro. U want perfect and smooth go buy a new one.
Nice work , looked great .
Awesome job just joined today
I’m looking to restore more axes,With winter approaching
Looks great!
What do you mean… to get rid of the handle. It’s perfect - for chopping around corners. 😂😂
Would have been a good Hewing axe, no chance of hitting your feet with the head lol.
Card scraper also called cabinet scraper to remove old finish best way I’ve found
love you man. ur the best. my condolences for those fish at the end.
Great restoration!
Great work and nice project!!😀😁🛠️🔧👍
As the saying goes.… making a silk purse out of a sows ear. Beautiful work 🪓
That was an outstanding job. It looks great!
Great personality. I liked the video
Come on! Hit this thing with a powered cup wire brush 😂

Good Very good 👏👏🌹🍀🌹
The stormtrooper reference got me!
7:33 CitriStrip is extremely mild. Definitely need something stronger! Say, Klean Strip brand, or Jasco.
Hi absolutely love your work , also your banter and bad jokes 😂 just keep on doing your amazing videos our very best to you love sue & Andy ♥️❤🏴🇬🇧
Good job brother
I will get you if it takes me all day!!! 😊 well done fine job.
To remove the varnish that comes on those ready made handles, use a Card Scraper or a Spoke Shave.
Good realistic usable axe.
What is that rust remover you use? That worked really well!
The way I strip new finishes is with a new rasor blade angled away from direction of travel, works good and is the quickest way I have found...
Very practical and well executed job!
sweden makes great axes, hultafors is world class
So one thing u could try to remove the finish is stain remover and cleaning alcohol, i usually use it to remove shiny finishes
Nice vid! When you fixed the pitting what kind of pads were you using on that angle grinder ?
What kind of angle grinder wheel did you use to polish up and remove the putting? I'd like to get one for myself. Great work! Cheers from Oregon!
Nice job, did you make the handle from scratch? 👍👍
Cabinet scrapers work great to remove varnish from handles.
take a sharp blade like a mora or a razor blade and set the cutting edge on the ax handle and drag the blade dont carve, drag.. i learned that from wranglerstar

Thanks Lawrence! It was fun doing this. Swedish fish and an axe. All I needed was some IKEA furniture to round out the video.
Wonderful job .. btw. I thought the only fish loved and consumed in Sweden is Surströmming?😋
Don't forget the top, bottom & back of the axe head.
Would you consider making a short out of this to post on social media? If not, would you mind if I did it for you?
Wetterlings. Good steel!
Lindo demais esse trabalho
It’s perfect
Have you heard about the magic powers of Evapo-Rust? 1 gallon is 30 bucks, but it's magical.
What a nice bow 😂
Класс 👍👍👍
Is the axe made by billnäs?
Great job. Thanks for the joke! 😄
I thought SAW was the initials of the man who started the oldest Swedish axe company, Wetterlings, in 1880; Sven Axel Wetterling.
The man just finds an S.A.Wetterlings leaning against his friends shed. I know people whp spent months trying to gind one of those, to cool!
Love the jokes -- keep it up!
LET THE CHOPPING BEGIN..LOL..GOOD JOB, KEEP WELL...
There were a lot of fish to chop.
When you factor in the cost of a new handle plus all the supplies and labor to restore it would it have been more cost effective to just go buy a new axe ? Don't get me wrong you did an awesome job. Very satisfying to watch you do it as well :)
I mean probably, but there's no TH-cam ad revenue from just buying a new axe.
That's a good point Chris and I think about it sometimes when I restore an axe. But there is the satisfaction of taking a classic ax and giving it a new life. Someone will be using this axe 100 years from now. (Plus, have you priced Swedish axes lately?) 🙂

How did the handle get so bent
careful with that Bauer bench grinder. you might accidentally turn off your lights when you flip the swicth on the grinder lol
Ever consider electrolysis?
I love Swedish fish
Скільки коштує випалювач ? Дякую.
You tell me, how the Hack, those handle got bend!
Use sharp knife to scrape off finish from handle, have done it on serval axe handle and rifle stocks
9:57 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
The thing about anything made in Sweden, you can depend on it's quality.
are they magic gummies? lol
I found one in the middle of the woods deep. It has had to have been there a century and a half
Imagine this guy goin through this whole process just to take someone out with that axe 😂
Best way I found to remove the varnish off a handle is to use a sharp knife and lightly scrape it off. Wrangler star has a good video here on TH-cam on it.
Good overall, but not good idea to use power sharpening. Better to slow file, then use a stone. PS may heat the steel too much.
There’s this stuff called sand paper that will take the coating off 😂
🐟🔥
you could cut trees around the corner with that old axe lol
Looks like as lossen axe from I still know what you did last summer or Friday-13.
What I don't get is, if you were to use the angle grinder, why all the previous steps? Without the paintjob it's a 30 minutes work.
Paint doesn’t adhere well to steel. You need to prime the raw steel before painting for best results. And longevity

You get a like just for the dad joke!
Use sharp knife to remove varnish from handle
Você da o maior trato no machado, depois enche ele de dentes, aí é covardia né 😋😁 kkkkkkkkkk Br

😂 Those are some great jokes!
IT WHEEL KEEL
👏👏👏👏👏👏🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉‼️‼️‼️👍👍👍😱😱
IMHO, too far on the blade polishing. I like a little pitting/patina. But otherwise another great job.
SAW…. Isn’t that S A Wetterlings?
Use a piece of broken glass to remove the finish, obviously for show and not for use
do no the fish!
Why did you spend all that time cleaning it up and then you just sandblasted it anyway you could have sandblasted it from the start and got the same effect
Taking off the first layer before hand does two things: Takes less time in the sand blaster and keep rust residue out of the blasting basin.
8 out of 10. I would give you a 10 but you didn't hand carve the handle from a stick of hickory ;)
