Pioneer Lines New Corporate Image ND&W Railroad PREX 3001 Napoleon Defiance & Western Bad Track

  • PREX 3001 in Pioneer's newest livery works on the Napoleon Defiance and Western Railway. Pioneer Railcorp recent changed their official name to Pioneer Lines and with that comes a new image! They used PREX 3001 which has been on the property several years running around in a tired Santa Fe livery. I've heard different opinions on new scheme but I personally like it. They didn't just regurgitate a past livery like the overused NKPish style used frequently by railroads. Also the paint style continues onto the roof giving this a good look all the way around.
I followed the train from Napoleon through Okolona and past Jewell before calling it a day. They have been working hard putting in new ties and ballast. Somewhere they have 10 miles of new rail to install but I did not witness that on this visit. Still got a unhealthy lean to the north in a few places!

They still have a lot of work to do, but it's awesome seeing what great progress they've made over the last few years. And now with a new paint scheme, they are really starting to look like a right and proper shortline business.

The new paint scheme looks decent and is a bit like the first Reading and Northern. That is a really neat old elevator in scene 2. Glad to see some progress on the tracks though that one siding looks better than the main line. For a line in an agricultural area it's rare to see an all boxcar train

I just glad to see they are making progress. I noticed a bunch of track laying along the Jewell elevator. Boy they need to get a siding back in there to move grain! When I was a kid the lines had been abandoned, and to see freight go down the lines is great. Its not every day a track is resurrected from the dead. Good work.

Sometime ~5 years or so back the rail company in my area decided they were going to start welding the rail ok every section when they replaced it. No more clamped together rail, and the trains go scary fast. But best of all? They are also ghostly quiet. I forget their exact logic behind it, but I kind of suspect part of it was they wanted the local Amtrak lines to get through faster so they were fighting them for rail space less.

Very cool, I like the new colors on PREX #3001! Also, she has a sweet sounding airhorn too. This GP20 definitely "screams" ex AT&SF if you will. The GP20 was the first EMD "Geep" to have a turbocharged V16-567D Engine, instead of being roots blown. These units were originally manufactured by EMD with a single one piece windshield, while others were built with the "original" high short hood, resembling a GP18. PREX #3001 is likely an ex Santa Fe GP20u, probably been rebuilt by the Santa Fe's Cleburne Texas shops in the late 1970's or early '80s. It appears that Pioneer has done significant trackwork on this line and isn't in that much terrible shape as it was a few years ago. I know this line is an ex Norfolk Southern, ex N&W exx Wabash. The tracks appear to have either 80 Pound per yd or 100 Pound per yd rail, hard to really tell though. Did you ever get any dates on any of the rails? I suspect the rails were probably manufactured roughly a century ago, as this size rail was typically acceptable for most mainline and branch line trackage in the early 20th Century. Stay safe and God bless.
