It must be real nice for the towns folk to have a train running their lines again. A town with a working train always makes the town feel more alive, and will make most people smile... just a little bit.

Growing up in the 60's, they used to switch cars at a nearby factory and often, depending on the engineer, they would let me & my friend ride in the cab of the GP9. Looking back, I can't believe they let us do that!

🤣👍🏻. Reminds me of watching the old Rock Island spur line line through our family farm between Atlantic & Audubon IA. Mostly OLD GP 7’s & 9’s. Think maybe an RS 2 during my early years (born 1958)…but I was to young to have a good memory of that! The Rock ran a weekly turn to Audubon. Biggest difference…the Rock had caboose’s back then! But, once a year we got a BIG train…called the T-bone express. Was a special cattle train to haul Iowa beef to market. That was a sight👍🏻

Just a heads up to everyone asking the same question. The ND&W runs through the Black Swamps of NW Ohio. The track there is ancient and dates far, far, back. When under it's more infamous moniker, the MAW (Maumee and Western) this was a line that lived to the motto of, "Deferment makes this someone else's problem". Pioneer has definitely done great strides in doing this line favors in bringing it back to something that actually resembles a railroad, and not an open air ore mine cart experience.

The Original GP7 was C&NW 1518 PLUS THE DEMONSTRATOR AND PROTOTYPE. Since 1988 it has been saved at the Union, ILLINOIS RAILWAY MUSEUM. Yet on the C&NW it served for nearly 38 years. Then it was renumbered into the 4311. And the high short hood was cut down to a low nose. The 4311 ran on many branchlines, like Pulaski to Wabeno. And between Oconto west to Oconto Falls through Stiles Jct. And Green Bay west to Wausau plus also Eland Jct.,North to Rhinelander. And so many more. But in the 1980s hundreds of miles of track were ripped out and made into nature trails. Thus hundreds of diesels were retired and sold and scrapped. And thousands of boxcar loads were changed over to semi trailers. That has led to millions of acres of pristine nature, being also ripped up for new superhighway. Like 54 west from G.B. to Wausau. And high gas prices. And driver shortages. And supply line issues. And unemployment and family hardships . But, when 4311 was in the scrap line, railfans recognized its historic value. 4311 was repaired here in G.B. with the high hood replaced here at the Roundhouse and repair shop at North G.B. When finished, the newly restored 1518 was debuted here at the NATIONAL RAILROAD MUSEUM next to U.P. RR. 4017 "BIG BOY" 4-8-8-4 . THEN, shipped down South to Union, Illinois. And luckily, I was able to get some 35mm slides of this historic meeting between diesel and steam. MERRY CHRISTMAS 2021 A.D.!!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 A.D.!!!!! GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.!!!!! 🙏 AMEN AND ALLELUIA!!!!!

Great video Scott and that GP9 definitely needs some DESPERATE attention! It's a shame that maintenance is deprived for some of the older locomotives. Sad to see how much oil has run down the sides bcuz I'm sure in its day and time it was dependable locomotive and earned its keep. You can also tell it has some age on it by having no ditch lights. Thanks for sharing this video Scott and using the drone adds that special touch to your videos!

Some of those tracks are in bad need of repair. I love the old trains and I miss them. Perhaps our newer fast trains will make up for them here in Canada.

Thank you for this neat video, Scott. Do you provide somwhere information on how you did the video?
I have traveled on much worse railroads before - I think some here underestimate what wheels on tracks can take.

Awesome vid - looks like they have been working on the track, some new ties and ballast in some places but holy moly. It's like a roller coaster! We've got a tiny little shortline out here, the Ballard Terminal Railroad, and I thought it's track was bad.

Any newer vids coming since the lines have been upgraded? Enjoy them seeing success and hope they will keep it from just become another dotted line on a map. Thanks.

Not gonna lie, but with the way the engine and cars are leaning, it's a wonder the whole train hasn't capsized!
