A running joke not mentioned in this video that I love is how obvious it is that this is filmed in Vancouver, not Santa Barbara. As they go through the seasons they try less and less hard to make the surroundings look beachy, take more “trips to Canada”, and spend more and more episodes galavanting through Pacific Northwest Forests that look nothing like Southern California 😂 As someone who’s lived in both areas, it’s a fun joke to be in on.
Ok just started watching but I said Shawn is definitely a Extrovert Sherlock and Gus is a Cowardly Holmes, but they have so many skills that complement each other, and their friendship is the best we (my wife and me) have ever seen
I like that Shawn isn’t just able to do this, he TRAINS to be that good. I feel like a lot of times the person is just natural at it, and that’s partially it, but seeing Shawn working on his skills is so good and makes me happy
Small but important correction: Shawn didn't train. He was trained. He had it forced on him, and grew up resenting Henry for it. But agreed, I do like that the show establishes not only his father training him, but later that he has his mother's eidetic memory.

They often have Gus/Julie/Lassie also notice stuff that Shawn might’ve missed which is another good thing to me bc he gets help and doesn’t just do everything on his own

Right? He's so well-written and relatable. My favorite part is how the people around him are in turns frustrated and supportive. He makes mistakes with good intentions and then tries to fix those relationships and it just makes approaching adult ADHD life feel more attainable. (And a reminder that life doesn't have to be boring after 30!)
a reason I think reference humor in Psych works so well is because most of the time the references don't feel like they're for the audience, they feel like shawn and gus making references to each other. I think the fact that most of the other characters in the show don't understand the jokes and that shawn and gus are constantly around each other all the time, them making somewhat niche (or really niche) references to something they presumably watched/experienced together is such a good piece of characterization. it works really well in a way that other shows don't capture.
That's how the pineapple joke started. James saw it randomly on set and gave the "wanna split a pineapple for the road" line. 3 hole punch was another one, post credit "psych outs" were so good
The only one that kind of bugged me (that I remember) was probably the pokémon go reference… hearing Gus talk about that really took me out, but in general I’d agree that I didn’t usually mind them since it was mostly just used as a quirky little part of their friendship and the reaction of the people around them kept it from feeling to pointed since they were equally just kind of confused by it lol
Weird fun fact: The producers of the show Leverage wanted Shawn Spencer to be related to Elliot Spencer. When they couldn't get the rights, they instead had psych be a show that was watched and admired by the Leverage characters.
that would have been wild, but it would probably have gotten me into leverage sooner, so I'm sad they left it out. brb going to write my fanfic where Shawn gets recruited to catch the leverage team (probably season 5 when they're in Portland) not knowing what Elliot's up to until the end and almost catches them and has to end the episode by lying about them blocking his psychic powers and let's them go. The way Lassie pushed the paramedic away at the end of Mr. Yin Presents is also so so amazing for Lassie’s character, the way he knows she won't break down until she feels safe and knows she will with him
Absolutely. It's one of the reasons it's such a stand out moment. Lassie know that this isn't what she needs right now and chooses to help in a seemingly very un-Lassie way while still being in character.
Perfect scene. Perfect acting. The way Jules grabs onto Lassie and then is embraced by him is amazing. Oscar award winning acting by Jules. You can FEEL how traumatized she is.
When Juliet breaks down after being kidnapped by Yang and Lassie just HOLDS her, ugh its so damn emotionally and hurts so much but is sooo beautiful and shows how much Lassie loves her and cares for her.
just those few seconds of Gus saying he doesn't blame Shawn while he thinks he's gonna die were enough to make me burst into tears. it is the PERFECT thing for him to say and shows just how much he cares and how well he knows Shawn and I'm crying again just typing this
Ill be honest, I was a little offended at the assuming that Shawn is bi just due to how he carries himself... but the follow up did completely clarify. Also, I relate to a lot of the traits that you described being things that make you think he is bi, which I dislike having things be assumed about me... but i got over it pretty quickly because... I am bi, at least to the extent of not caring about gentalia and just being attracted to femininity. Really wonderful video, thank you for the time you put into, and shared with us.
@@ASMCourtneyyeah I think it’s pretty messed up to declare someone’s sexuality based off of being nice to people. I think this kind of thing contributes to the whole toxic masculinity thing .. like I’ve worked mostly around men my whole life and from what I’ve observed plenty of men are super complementary. And gay jokes are super common like being gay for each other are 50% or their jokes, the other 50% are dick jokes. (I’m being sarcastic here, I think men are much more multi dimensional than that, which is why it sucks this kind of character dissection is so common) .. then they have to follow it up with no homo stuff or something like that so people don’t look so much into it. Plus as a lesbian, this kind of thing sucks for me too because I want to compliment my friends and not make them uncomfortable like I’m flirting with them. This is the reason I make so much of an effort to seem distant from women until I’m sure they understand a compliment doesn’t mean I’m flirting with them.

Hello! So, I’m autistic and Psych is my special interest and has been for a very, very, very long time. The fandom isn’t by any means dead, but it’s slow. This video genuinely made me well up with tears of excitement multiple times, to have someone speak about something that I love so dearly in such depth and admiration is so comforting. I was audibly commenting on your commentary the whole way through, you made such amazing points and while you brought to mind some things I’ve never thought of, I also felt so understood the whole way through. You took Psych as so much more than a silly comedy show and I appreciate that so much. Thank you!!!
There's nothing greater than the validation of seeing someone make a video about how much they love the thing that feels integral to you as a person. I think Psych really shaped my humor and some of my favorite memories as a kid were when I watched psych with my parents and siblings.

I'm gonna be real, 3 months ago i bumped into this video, then watched the show and movies and now i'm back and finished the video, great stuff! Thank you so much for introducing me to the series! I'm surprised adhd didn't come into play in the video, cause, Shawn is probably one of the best representations of it i've ever seen honestly? Like, obviously, a bit exaggerated, but so much of it hit so close to home, and I like that it isn't treated as a necessarily bad thing, but as just how he is, and, maybe part of why he picks up on details that other people miss, it's just great.
I do still kinda like how Toxic Masculinity Shawn is in Season 1 because it makes his evolution even better, it makes his Later Silliness feel sort of... Freed? Like he was still so butter in Season 1 and his evolution away from some of those traits is a natural consequence of him being happier and having his close knit little family to fufill him so he has less need to Close Off
Troy in season 1 of Community is pretty similar. He's this letterman jacket wearing football bro and then he starts getting a little weirder and weirder as he gets closer with Abed.
I suppose part of it could be explained with simply getting more comfortable with the people he is around and opening up. I kind of prefer his more sarcastic humor, but he is obviously a more likeable character after season 1.

Shawn & Juliet are definitely one of the only slow burn couples that actually work throughout the entire show. As much as I love Jess & Nick, the writers handled them together in such an odd way that I see happen a lot where the writers don't know what to do after all that tension & build up. Definitely an underrated couple for sure
one thing I would have loved. Is when Shawn and Jules were broken up, we got a Juliet episode. Something were we see her struggle over the break up, and her having so many questions, the biggest of which. If Shawn beat the polygraph about being psychic, did that mean he also lied about loving her? So I think an episode where she goes around with Henry, and he teaches her all the same things he taught Shawn. fold a murder plot for her to solve in as well. Let those plots mingle. and then at the end have Henry teach her how to beat the polygraph like Shawn, and then have her do a piecing it together vision thing like Shawn does, so that she understands that no, Shawn didn't lie about loving her. It would just make them getting back together a little later on feel more natural then it being off screen and Shawn just saying 'yep were officially together again' to Gus.

Psych was my childhood, and it is one of the only few shows I will just pick up randomly every once in a while when I feel like watching something comforting. I did not even realize this was a 3 hour long video until I was 2 HOURS INTO IT because I didn't even check the time stamp. I was just like "A Psych video? Sign me up!" I like your takes and love the episodes you highlighted, and listed absolutely every single one of them in my notes to give me ideas of which ones to randomly watch when I feel like it. This video just literally happened to perfectly drop right when I was back in my re-watching phase.

Watch the Jeremy Brett show from the 80s. They did both characters wonderfully. They hint at his drugs use once or twice but they stop by later seasons because kids loved the show.
The choice of using I've Heard It Both Ways both as the intro to the Musical segment *and* sting after stating Shawn goes both ways was a stroke of genius, applause!

I didn't believe it at first, but since it's directly from the writers, it's considered canonical! As for Shawn, I've seen gif sets and images of the panel/interview but I can't find any videos. So I would take that one with a grain of salt!

Psych is one of my comfort shows! I remember when it was still airing, my family would be so excited for each new episode. We still regularly quote it (especially Shawn's "Gus, don't be a _____" lines) and it never gets old. Psych is a hidden gem that deserves so much more appreciation. Now I feel the need to rewatch the entire series.

Okay, but the Green Lanterns aren't just fictional police. They operate in a similar way to the United Nations mixed with Emergency Response Units. The best way to describe it is that they are meant to prevent situations such as the Sinestro Corps or Darkseid from conquering the universe, and enforcing protection over the galaxy as a whole through a council of people and their resources pooled together from each planet and sector which is the UN portion. However, they also actively try to prevent situations like the destruction of Krypton or the Extinction of Mars. So whilst they are Space Cops, they are closer to Space UN Cops because they aren't enforcing Galactic Rule over the Oa Empire, they are attempting to prevent Galactic Conquest by a number of organizations, people, and civilizations. Noble as a cause as that is, the Guardians are still fucking awful though.
I don’t like being that person saying a negative thing on a video just to be contrary, but like… I feel like saying acab in a video about Psych is sort of disrespectful to what the show did, which was, you know, skillfully showing the human (if in a silly way) side of some cops. Blanket statements about the morality of someone in a job or people group is a fine way to never actually make social change for the better. 🤷♀️ Beyond that I’ve been enjoying the video, but I saw this comment at the same time as it was said in the video and… I dunno. Thought I’d mention it. Edit: having moved forward through the Lassiter segment, I’d say the essayist did a good job acknowledging nuance (“you can be a jerk and politically wrong but not be a horrible person”), so I take that back. However… I would argue that cancels the whole ideology of acab if we apply that logic. So again, I’m just confused by this slogan and its actual bearing on reality. 😅
I love that Shawn and Gus playoff cover each other when it comes to solving cases Shawn is incredibly intelligent, but often doesn't have the knowledge to put the things he's seen into perspective. While Gus is incredibly knowledgeable in even the most obscure things ( zip codes and locks for example.) Edit I wrote this before watching

If I remember my facts right, the 3 endings to 100 Clues even had a fan contest aspect where fans voted for the "canon" ending of the episode, which I love. Psych values it's fan so much!

I absolutely LOVE AND ADORE the friendship between Lassie and O'Hara! It's one of my favorite relationships we see develop throughout the show- the older and more emotionally closed off detective and the younger optimistic detective pair up is a classic and done so well here. We see them go from begrudgingly coworkers, learning to respect each other and see each others strengths they start to really work well together as partners, and then they grow to genuinely care for one another, anticipating each others needs and learning from one another. By the end of the show we see how much both people have grown and the genuine love (platonic) they have for one another!!
Speaking of bi vibes... in the episode with the sea lion I was so sure the cute marine biologist Juliette was vibing with was going to ask her out, and you CANNOT convince me Jules' disappointment when she asked about Shaun instead was all about her crush on Shaun.
First off, I love everything about this, but especially the pineapples placed in each shot! I am an original Psych-O and watched it all live from the Pilot, absolutely one of my favorite shows than I am long over-due for another rewatch of. I, in fact played the Hashtag Killer game religiously, and was even one of the usernames that they shouted out over the course of the case, which made me so unbelievably happy. I feel like everyone working on the show just seemed to be so kind and genuine. They also really reached out to their fans so much. Over half of the Psych things I own were either acquired using ClubPsych points, won from a giveaway contest, or just straight up given to the fans. Being involved in the Psych community was a really fun time for me, even if my introverted self never actually dove all the way in. It's just brought so much joy to my life, and your video helped remind me of those happy times.
I hear this. My roommate were very detached for a few months of the pandemic, then one day we turned the living room couch into a bed and had a five to eight day sleepover where we continuously watched Psyche and slowly felt ourselves coming back to life. It really brought us together after basically avoiding each other for a few months. It was glorious and whenever we felt we were turning too far inward again we would agree to another three day minimum Psyche marathon. 💙💗

I don't normally do this, but I did the whole song and dance (like, comment, save, subscribe, and share) because you've created something phenomenal here, with the same heart and dedication as the brilliant team behind the show. I love long format video essays in general, but this one? This one was truly exceptional. I'm mostly commenting for engagement purposes here--I don't like commenting much--but I'll add that my family has the whole show on dvd and we watched it over and over and over again when I was a kid. It holds a special place in my heart, and it's lovely to see that even so many years later there's still a passionate community of fans.
I got so much joy from this video! I've loved Psych since I was a kid (i saw Tuesday the 17th when it first aired when i was six and it freaked me so bad but also instilled a love of horror movies). Small but important correction: Shawn didn't train. He was trained. He had it forced on him, and grew up resenting Henry for it. But agreed, I do like that the show establishes not only his father training him, but later that he has his mother's eidetic memory.

They often have Gus/Julie/Lassie also notice stuff that Shawn might’ve missed which is another good thing to me bc he gets help and doesn’t just do everything on his own

It's the best part about the beginning clips like the one where henry tells him to walk on the balls of his feet and then it cuts to him doing it at the police station

(And a reminder that life doesn't have to be boring after 30!)

a reason I think reference humor in Psych works so well is because most of the time the references don't feel like they're for the audience, they feel like shawn and gus making references to each other. I think the fact that most of the other characters in the show don't understand the jokes and that shawn and gus are constantly around each other all the time, them making somewhat niche (or really niche) references to something they presumably watched/experienced together is such a good piece of characterization. it works really well in a way that other shows don't capture.
That's how the pineapple joke started. James saw it randomly on set and gave the "wanna split a pineapple for the road" line. 3 hole punch was another one, post credit "psych outs" were so good
The only one that kind of bugged me (that I remember) was probably the pokémon go reference… hearing Gus talk about that really took me out, but in general I’d agree that I didn’t usually mind them since it was mostly just used as a quirky little part of their friendship and the reaction of the people around them kept it from feeling to pointed since they were equally just kind of confused by it lol

The way Lassie pushed the paramedic away at the end of Mr. Yin Presents is also so so amazing for Lassie’s character, the way he knows she won't break down until she feels safe and knows she will with him

Absolutely. It's one of the reasons it's such a stand out moment. Lassie know that this isn't what she needs right now and chooses to help in a seemingly very un-Lassie way while still being in character.
Perfect scene. Perfect acting. The way Jules grabs onto Lassie and then is embraced by him is amazing. Oscar award winning acting by Jules. You can FEEL how traumatized she is.
When Juliet breaks down after being kidnapped by Yang and Lassie just HOLDS her, ugh its so damn emotionally and hurts so much but is sooo beautiful and shows how much Lassie loves her and cares for her.
And then the next episode the entire team bug her to come back
just those few seconds of Gus saying he doesn't blame Shawn while he thinks he's gonna die were enough to make me burst into tears. it is the PERFECT thing for him to say and shows just how much he cares and how well he knows Shawn and I'm crying again just typing this

Also, I relate to a lot of the traits that you described being things that make you think he is bi, which I dislike having things be assumed about me... but i got over it pretty quickly because... I am bi, at least to the extent of not caring about gentalia and just being attracted to femininity. Really wonderful video, thank you for the time you put into, and shared with us.

I think this kind of thing contributes to the whole toxic masculinity thing .. like I’ve worked mostly around men my whole life and from what I’ve observed plenty of men are super complementary. And gay jokes are super common like being gay for each other are 50% or their jokes, the other 50% are dick jokes. (I’m being sarcastic here, I think men are much more multi dimensional than that, which is why it sucks this kind of character dissection is so common) .. then they have to follow it up with no homo stuff or something like that so people don’t look so much into it.
Plus as a lesbian, this kind of thing sucks for me too because I want to compliment my friends and not make them uncomfortable like I’m flirting with them. This is the reason I make so much of an effort to seem distant from women until I’m sure they understand a compliment doesn’t mean I’m flirting with them.
Honestly, this is one of those video essays that make me think "I bet the writers of this show have been just WAITING to see this. If they do, they'll probably just absolutely cream their pants"

I'm surprised adhd didn't come into play in the video, cause, Shawn is probably one of the best representations of it i've ever seen honestly? Like, obviously, a bit exaggerated, but so much of it hit so close to home, and I like that it isn't treated as a necessarily bad thing, but as just how he is, and, maybe part of why he picks up on details that other people miss, it's just great.
I do still kinda like how Toxic Masculinity Shawn is in Season 1 because it makes his evolution even better, it makes his Later Silliness feel sort of... Freed? Shawn & Juliet are definitely one of the only slow burn couples that actually work throughout the entire show. As much as I love Jess & Nick, the writers handled them together in such an odd way that I see happen a lot where the writers don't know what to do after all that tension & build up. Definitely an underrated couple for sure
one thing I would have loved.
Is when Shawn and Jules were broken up, we got a Juliet episode.
Something were we see her struggle over the break up, and her having so many questions, the biggest of which. If Shawn beat the polygraph about being psychic, did that mean he also lied about loving her?
So I think an episode where she goes around with Henry, and he teaches her all the same things he taught Shawn. fold a murder plot for her to solve in as well. Let those plots mingle.
and then at the end have Henry teach her how to beat the polygraph like Shawn, and then have her do a piecing it together vision thing like Shawn does, so that she understands that no, Shawn didn't lie about loving her.
It would just make them getting back together a little later on feel more natural then it being off screen and Shawn just saying 'yep were officially together again' to Gus.

I didn't believe it at first, but since it's directly from the writers, it's considered canonical! As for Shawn, I've seen gif sets and images of the panel/interview but I can't find any videos. So I would take that one with a grain of salt!

Psych is one of my comfort shows! I remember when it was still airing, my family would be so excited for each new episode. Okay, but the Green Lanterns aren't just fictional police. They operate in a similar way to the United Nations mixed with Emergency Response Units.
The best way to describe it is that they are meant to prevent situations such as the Sinestro Corps or Darkseid from conquering the universe, and enforcing protection over the galaxy as a whole through a council of people and their resources pooled together from each planet and sector which is the UN portion. However, they also actively try to prevent situations like the destruction of Krypton or the Extinction of Mars.
So whilst they are Space Cops, they are closer to Space UN Cops because they aren't enforcing Galactic Rule over the Oa Empire, they are attempting to prevent Galactic Conquest by a number of organizations, people, and civilizations. Noble as a cause as that is, the Guardians are still fucking awful though.
I don’t like being that person saying a negative thing on a video just to be contrary, but like… I feel like saying acab in a video about Psych is sort of disrespectful to what the show did, which was, you know, skillfully showing the human (if in a silly way) side of some cops. Blanket statements about the morality of someone in a job or people group is a fine way to never actually make social change for the better. 🤷♀️ Beyond that I’ve been enjoying the video, but I saw this comment at the same time as it was said in the video and… I dunno. Thought I’d mention it.
Edit: having moved forward through the Lassiter segment, I’d say the essayist did a good job acknowledging nuance (“you can be a jerk and politically wrong but not be a horrible person”), so I take that back. However… I would argue that cancels the whole ideology of acab if we apply that logic. So again, I’m just confused by this slogan and its actual bearing on reality. 😅
I love that Shawn and Gus playoff cover each other when it comes to solving cases Shawn is incredibly intelligent, but often doesn't have the knowledge to put the things he's seen into perspective. While Gus is incredibly knowledgeable in even the most obscure things ( zip codes and locks for example.)

I absolutely LOVE AND ADORE the friendship between Lassie and O'Hara! It's one of my favorite relationships we see develop throughout the show- the older and more emotionally closed off detective and the younger optimistic detective pair up is a classic and done so well here. We see them go from begrudgingly coworkers, learning to respect each other and see each others strengths they start to really work well together as partners, and then they grow to genuinely care for one another, anticipating each others needs and learning from one another. By the end of the show we see how much both people have grown and the genuine love (platonic) they have for one another!!

First off, I love everything about this, but especially the pineapples placed in each shot! I am an original Psych-O and watched it all live from the Pilot, absolutely one of my favorite shows than I am long over-due for another rewatch of. I, in fact played the Hashtag Killer game religiously, and was even one of the usernames that they shouted out over the course of the case, which made me so unbelievably happy. I feel like everyone working on the show just seemed to be so kind and genuine. They also really reached out to their fans so much. Over half of the Psych things I own were either acquired using ClubPsych points, won from a giveaway contest, or just straight up given to the fans. Being involved in the Psych community was a really fun time for me, even if my introverted self never actually dove all the way in. It's just brought so much joy to my life, and your video helped remind me of those happy times.

I hear this. My roommate were very detached for a few months of the pandemic, then one day we turned the living room couch into a bed and had a five to eight day sleepover where we continuously watched Psyche and slowly felt ourselves coming back to life. It really brought us together after basically avoiding each other for a few months. It was glorious and whenever we felt we were turning too far inward again we would agree to another three day minimum Psyche marathon. 💙💗
It's been over a decade but whenever I'm watching anything with my boyfriend or mother I always point out every pineapple I see as if it's an Easter egg in movies completely unrelated to psych

I think my favorite thing about Shawn or is it Sean? Iv’e heard it both ways. Anyway, I love that Shawn’s issues with his parents’ divorce was to blame his dad. Too often it is written that men from divorced parents blame the mom. I feel like it reinforces those feelings IRL.

I love long format video essays in general, but this one? This one was truly exceptional.
I'm mostly commenting for engagement purposes here--I don't like commenting much--but I'll add that my family has the whole show on dvd and we watched it over and over and over again when I was a kid. I got so much joy from this video! I've loved Psych since I was a kid (i saw Tuesday the 17th when it first aired when i was six and it freaked me so bad but also instilled a love of horror movies). You somehow chose exactly the clips that would make me cackle. I rewatch this show at least once a year and it's hilarious every time. As I've gotten older, the jokes get even better
