I tried dry needling this week for the first time for herniated discs. It hurt like the dickens with the needles going in and with the needles coming out! However, the next day, I experienced very little back pain!

How many minutes did your dry needling session last?
How many sessions did you receive?
How long did your pain stay away?

This is ABSOLUTELY NOT dry needling.
Dry needling is a technique using a filament needle to inactivate myofascial trigger points. Palpating for the trigger points is the way to identify the myofascial trigger point.
Electronic stimulation using a needle is NOT dry needlling. It is percutaneous electrical stimulation at best.
Repeat. This is not dry needling

Dry needling for TrP release doesn't require electrical stimulation. It is just mechanical eradication. Needle fanning is used to clear all the trigger points in taut bands.

An an accident in January so back doing PT and alot of new things. So glad this orthopedic doctor added dry needles. Gotta work those muscles too. Thanks for sharing. This is acupuncture no dry needling, for your information most of the meridians fall on the muscles, and in this video he explaied it is done to the skin and not to muscle but he said it is for tennis elbow, which is infammation of lateral epicondyle where forearm extensor muscle attaches. Is it skin or muscle then?
In acupuncture these two points are called as LI 10 and LI 11.
So dry needling is nothing but plain use of acupuncture by Physiotherapists. But they do not want to promote the word acupuncture.

This is orthopedic electro-acupuncture where we yes target the muscle and trigger points. Targeting meridian-organ systems is internal medicine, and it can often be supportive in pain relief. He is using an acupuncture filiform needle. Acupuncturists do dry needling too.

It’s acupuncture , you put a needle into a painful point , you retained the needle , you used estim , all acupuncture . Don’t get your 27-54 hours of training as being an expert on what you call “dry needling” this is the same technique I would use in my clinic to treat myofascial pain… and yes according to tcm meridian theory . You’re on a channel… it’s great work you’re doing that’s for sure, and yes this will get relief , but it’s also called acupuncture … I’ll accept you call it DN because you don’t know anything about tcm except for what ever they told you in the DN course you took, but yes this is 1000 percent a acupuncture technique , estim needles has been part of acupuncture training and practiced since 1931. You can’t just appropriate a technique and say oh it’s something else because I called it a muscle and not a meridian… we target muscles too… acupuncturist are current on anatomy… seem to have a very narrow definition of acupuncture … our 4 year training includes over 900 hours of supervised practice … not a couple of weekend courses and told to go needle people without any supervised practice… I find it funny that you don’t know acupuncturist don’t treat muscles lol …
