Agreed on the 2 last adjectives « helpful and practical » which is what we want as we are not lost in detail of secondary functionalities
Not really the « most thorough » but again that’s why Ken’s reviews are the best as you get a nice real-life view with the key takeaway facts and appreciation of ease of use and image quality .. only .. and not dozens of mentions of small details that don’t make a camera a good one or not

Between this review and the Z50, I've learned more about photography than most of the photography content I've see in my life. I think a lot of people nowdays are confused between learning and enjoying photography, and learning post production with raw photos. I know now that I'm a jpeg guy and look forward to buying a Z50. I don't want to go hiking, take bunch of raws, then spend hours sorting and modifying photos to get compliments, I want to capture moments and memories and share them.
Also, I would not have learned about the leaf shutter and its interaction with flash if not for this video, that's a big deal. Took me back to my days of taking family photos with seemingly perennial mis -timed flashes then taking them to be developed at the photo studio who inevitably botched your reel with their poorly calibrated machines and blamed your 'bad photos' :)

Hey Ken, tried to find your opinion on the X100V heat issue that seems to be a topic. Any experience from your use? (Sorry if I missed it in the video/webreview.
James Pålsson no heat problem seem. Then again, I didn’t try running it for more than a minute of video. Huge heat problem on my XT30; overheats shooting 4K which is why I believe the run times are so short. With no stabilization x100v is impractical for video. Any heat problem I assume is shooting 4K. Does this help?
@@KenRockwellTV Yes, thanks for the response. I wonder how many would have cared if they just removed the video capability all together. As you say, it makes no sense filming without IBIS (when a decent smartphone outperforms the camera).

Very well made, so much in fact that I bit and purchased the X100V. You didn't steer me wrong 16 years ago when I bought my first camera the Nikon D70, and it seems you still are keeping it real. I had never considered using the builtin flash on my black X-100f, to the point where I have covered the flash lens with black gaffer tape to add to its 'discrete' appearance. After listening to this review, I will now start exploring the higher shutter speed, fill flash options. Thank you Ken.

I too am an X100 fan. I have owned the X100 and X100S and acquired the X100V briefly until the Nikon Z6II arrived. I then returned the X100V and have been using the Z6II ($1900) as the daily driver paired with either Z24-50 or 50/1.8. The size was a definite drawback to more quick shots especially with the larger lens combinations. However, I recently purchased the Z-28mm/2.8 cupcake lens ($250) and, I have to say, finally have a setup that really suits my daily photo wants/needs and rivals the X100V compactness. The Nikon Z6II with Z 28/F2.8 actually performs better in my intended daily shooting and casual/travel needs than the Fuji X100V. The user settings (U1, U2, U3) allow for faster/more on the fly configuration changes. In addition, the Z6II has a better performing autofocus and video options. To be sure, my preference for the Nikon Z6II as the daily use platform is in part due to my Nikon bias, shooting 20+ years vice Fuji 10+ years and I recently upgraded from Nikon D700 to Z9 as the main body for events/action/work. By having the daily driver as the Z6II, the menu, layout, ergonomics, workflows and storage issues are same/similar and allow similar tactile feels and movements to capture images. That said, the X100V (and the X100 series), produce the best JPEGs for immediate use in my opinion. Love the color spread. While I love the Fujifilm X100V for what it is and what it does, I finally have a Nikon full format solution that better meets my day to day needs and provides greater creativity options (although at a greater cost/investment).

I've read your various reviews for a while, but not viewed a video - nice to get acquainted with your voice. Excellent review and I do like the way you take photos of people (and dogs!) I still have a Fuji X10, which also takes really good fill in flash, but with a zoom lens, but small 12 mp sensor. I would love that Fuji update the X10 to a 1" sensor but that doesn't seem to be likely.

Always found the website a bit dry, but watching this a massive thumbs up from me. I've had a 100v for a while and like my other cameras, I have shied away from using flash. Just dashed downstairs for my 100v and mapped flash to a function button, I'll be trying it out.

Hi Mark, it is, but I only ever use the electronic finder. An optical finder sounds great on paper until you realize that the x100v is so slow in operation that you’re not gaining anything with an optical Finder.
New to Fuji and picked up this camera a few weeks back. Way different than my Canons, but having fun with it. Learned a few things from your review I will have to try. I haven't even turned the flash on once yet! Love the size, makes a great "I'm not sure what I'm going to photograph, but want a camera with all the controls, camera".

Great review. Have the X100F, great camera but ordered the V in black. Too many improvements to pass up for my needs. Kids=faster focus/flip screen, rainy Pacific NW= weather sealing, and that lens 👌. Can't wait for delivery.

Superb detailed review... For me I have only two drawbacks regarding this camera : first is its fixed lens which makes me think twice before considering getting a "used" one because any problem the previous owner may have caused to the lens would stay there forever. The second weakness in my opinion is its focal length... I personally prefer the 18mm (27mm equivalent) for general street shootings.

Honestly I prefer my X100F www.kenrockwell.com/fuji/x100f.htm because it has a rear 4-way controller replaced by foolish touch swipes on the X100V, and today the X100F sells for much less than the X100V.

Ken you can save the fujifilm camera profiles including all settings to your pc and mac using fujfifilm acquire software. it’s really handy! it’s fiddly if it’s your first time though since you have to go into the menu of the camera and enable usb pc connection first otherwise you’ll scratch your head wondering why your pc isn’t recognizing your camera even though it’s plugged in via usb-c

Surprised to actually HEAR Ken Rockwell. From your website, I've always been a fan of your positive idiosyncratic style, that gives us the blessing of many clear viewpoints not to be found elsewhere. Just love it, how you can take off in billowing enthusiasm and after that, touch the ground with sober relativism. Though I think this video is a bit too long with too many iterations (pity - because you saved some best tips for the last), it's of course way better than all those talking head / street walking "humorous" time wasters, as others already pointed out.

Great review, as always, Ken. I want to add that the little Fujifilm XF10 also has a built in flash with a leaf shutter, in a 28mm equivalent f/2.8 lens; and it has a 24 MP APS-C sensor, same one as in the X100F, I believe. Not in the same league as the X100 series, but a great, compact budget option.

Mr Rockwell is an auctioneer in his day job? Did he manage this all in just a few takes? This is the most amazingly comprehensive, waffleless, hmm and ha-less piece of educational audio it has been my pleasure to enjoy. Fabulous!
All one take. One long take, like 40 minutes with the pauses and repetition cut out for brevity. Only my iPhone seems to have the chops to run more than 30 minutes at 4K.
Impressive indeed! I speak as someone who has been a teacher (Grade school through college) for 40 years.
It’s sad that rangefinder type cameras lost out to slr cameras back in the 70’s. It seems as though there should have been room for cameras in this form factor along with slr cameras.
There were, but most of us wanted to be able to see exactly what was going to be in our picture and what was going to be in focus, too. Ultimately no one cares for viewfinder cameras when we could get slrs and see what was actually going on. Thanks.
Enjoyed the review. You provided very useful guidance to me for some time. I have kept to the Nikon system - can’t afford to change systems like other people do. I know the Nikon system, and the picture quality if good enough for an enthusiast like me. Currently have the D750 for the dynamic range advantages. But, I’ll still grab my d80 with fast zoom as a versatile grab-and-go camera for trips where I don’t want to worry about my gear. I’m also a Velvia lover, but until I recently read something you wrote about Velvia 50 still being produced, I didn’t realize that it was still available, new. You have me interested in getting a medium format Fuji 6x9 for serious, contemplative shooting, but I’m skittish about buying used from Japan, where most seem to come from. I bought the fugi x100t recently for $400. I’m floored by the camera - reminds me of my Dad’s Leica M3 in some ways, and I love that camera with 50 summicron. I have to watch the budget, so I generally buy cameras after they have been out for a bit and have come down in price - I’ll buy used or new, ... just not when the models first come out. Again, ... the pictures I can get with older technology are very satisfying. I agree with you that Velvia mode in the fugifilm just isn’t like my Velvia slides. I don’t particularly like the greens on the standard (provia), so I’ve been shooting Sensia sim with in-camera enhancements and enhancing a bit further in post for those walk-around grab shots of scenery. I feel that I can get decent color enhancement without losing the shadow detail. (I know I don’t quite go for the color pop that you like, though.) Since entering the digital world, ... I miss seeing the film renditions in slides, especially Velvia. I am concerned that the impact of the COVID-19 virus may shut down what is left of the film production. I hope that is not the case as I’m considering getting back to film to return to the enjoyment I had for Velvia slides. I’d start with my Nikon F5, ... but if I find it addicting, ... I’ll be committing more to a used medium format film camera. Thanks again - for the many years in which I’ve enjoyed your perspective and knowledge. I’m subbed to the TH-cam channel - keep it up!

Thanks! I love sharing this stuff; that’s why I do this - and that same strap still going strong after 12 years. Sometimes I put tape on non-Leica cameras if the plastic strap parts run on the camera.

Hey, you mentioned that you had to go to the menu to turn the flash on and off. I was wondering, can't you set up this option on one of the buttons? Fuji is usually highly customizable in reconfiguring them to your liking. Great review though! I want to buy it more and more!
You can and I do, but all that button does for you is call up the flash in the menu system a little faster.
Authoritative as always. I have a new one arriving on Monday at which point I’ll probably send back the used X100F I ordered. I’m not usually indecisive, but the F didn’t quite seem to be there, though honestly, it’s limitations can be worked around. But the F to V decision is tough, I’m wondering if the V colours are flatter. Anyway Monday is judgement day.... cut to Arnie looking menacing
They are 97% the same. Unless there’s something critical about the new version for you, you won’t even notice the difference between them.
Great review, very good. If its possible to do a request on a old camera. Do a review and tutorial video for NIKON D3. There are some videos out on the tube but would be cool to have a "new" tutorial about the camera now in 2020

Hi Ken, thanks for the great info on what HSS can do in practical terms with this camera. I recently bought an little used X100T on EBay for £400 based on your reviews, just to see if I liked it. I got fed up with hauling large cameras, but I still wanted good (enough) quality. The T seemed a good choice as it has the usb charging and WiFi. For the money, I think it’s great. I think it is the camera I like best out of all I’ve owned. The autofocus is fine despite some people suggesting it’s not, and it’s much better than I thought in low light for family pics indoors. It’s sharp, nice colours, bokeh on demand, always seems to take a good photo, and compact. I’m now experimenting with HSS flash thanks to your video!
Look out: I’m not talking about the trick HSS mode, which doesn’t work and isn’t needed with these cameras. In this case you get regular sync at all speeds, even the very fastest. HSS is a trick mode with focal plane cameras that lets you sync at high speeds with focal plane shutters, but losses most of the flash power so it’s not useful. Thanks!
Excellent review...one of if not THE best i've seen. I'm in love with this camera. Had one of the earlier ones in the series. Am holding off a month to see what Fuji will do with the rumored X-E4, then will decide between the two. (The rumored new compact 27mm f2.8 would be my preferred 'one lens' solution). Craig
The xe4 and xe3 are totally different cameras. The.x100 series are far superior- unlesss you need interchangeable lenses. Thanks

I’ve noticed that my X100V will not engage AE Lock (I programmed the AEL/AFL button to only do AE Lock) unless the shutter speed is set to auto. Is there a way around this? I have not been able to find a mode that will let me manually set the shutter speed and use AE Lock at the same time.
You’re ahead of me, I’ve NEVER gotten AF lock to lock at all!

Great review thanks. I’m on a fence for this one and a Fuji x pro 3. I’m a wedding photographer and will purchase one of those for my weddings and also for some street photography. Which one would you recommend? I’m comfortable with a 35mm if I need something else with take my canon gear to compliment. Thanks in advance.
I strongly prefer the X100 unless you need interchangeable lenses. Especially for people, its ultra high flash sync and built in flash is everything.

The shutter are metal blades that flip out of the way to expose. They move one way to open, and move back to the same position to close. They can only move so fast. At the limit they may have enough time to open a little for a small aperture, but not enough time to open all the way for the largest apertures. Thanks!

iPhone 11 has best video, especially best autofocus and close focus. I have no idea why people who don’t have three operators per camera bother with any other cameras. Thanks!
I really want one of these, but the X100Fs are looking decent on eBay too at around $600 now. But I can still do plenty with the leaf shutter and 12 megapixels on my old Pentax Q - that thing has surprisingly great colors and a good flash sync speeds. I like my a6500 as well, but both fell like you have to fight the settings more than you would have to on the X100V for people or when you need to be fast.

Thank you Ken! I've read your guide on the x100v a few times since you posted it and I'm convinced that you are right! I'm just looking to use it for food, family, and travel. None of these things need the new lens's close focusing or lightning-fast autofocus.
Patrick Jaszewski the original lens focuses even a little bit closer and is just as sharp, stopped down properly. Even the original 2011 X100 is great for closeups.

Great review. At non-close-to-macro distances wide open - is the x100v clearly superior than the X100F at f2?
At anything other than super close macro distances, both are the same at f/2. I’ve owned them all since 2011 X100 and never noticed the close softened at f/2 until so many people whined to me about it that I looked for it. I never saw it before since I know to stop down close, otherwise depth of field is so thin they nothing’s in focus, regardless of how sharp in the lab. In other words, unless you intend to shoot super close at f/2, all the X100 series look great.
me2 don't understand the complaints,at its time the original x100 and x100f i own does it well at f2,couldnt expect more from this setup....

Nope. Doesn’t matter; the X100F is better than the V. Fuji has to be kidding; the V lacks the rear 4-way controller and replaced that with swipes. Good grief! I hear the X100X will do away with even more controls. Thanks!

You should be able to repurpose one of the back buttons to switch flash on or off,
Yes and I do, but it’s still a button that leads to a page that requires spinning a knob while I look at the page - far to slow for real world action shooting compared to a slide switch.
Dear Ken I recently played with the F that belonged to a friend in California & fell in Love with it......heard about some heating issues with the V....am primarily a iPhone & Nikon shooter ....planning on picking the F before I head back home to Mumbai as a primary street shooter over the V thou its only a $100 difference here in Virginia.....suggestions ???
Fuji doesn’t do video as well as an iPhone. My XT30 nearly melted down and discharged the battery entirely after a few minutes at 4K, while my iPhone can run all day. None of the x100 have video stabilization while the iPhone has built In auto gimbals. I’d forget the x100 for video. I prefer my x100F over the newer V; Fuji took away the controls ai need so why would I want the degraded bee version? Thanks!

Hi Chris!! Honestly I never seem to run my battery down. If you’re as cheap as I am, I’d stick with one battery and see if you ever run it down by the end of the day before buying a spare. Z50 pix look so much better for everything than any pic from the x100v for anything other than people. Thanks!

I've actually decided to get a Z6 as well, as I have a lot of Nikon glass that I can adapt over - and I'm right with you on the megapixel thing - which is far overrated - I'd go for that crazy high iso noise performance any day (oh and smaller file sizes!). I don't think we need to zoom into the whiskers on a cat 12 miles away right?! Maybe re-frame your shot then?! lol Best channel on youtube buddy I'm looking forward to more of your content.
