Thank you for the great feedback. I will also be doing an update to my set up as there's been many additions since this video. I hope to have it up this month
Many thanks. After viewing your videos, I purchased the Creos PS289. It is outstanding in all respects. I have a Tamiya 0.2mm and H&S Evolution 0.4mm airbrushes that I was never comfortable with using. The Mr Hobby airbrush has me back at the hobby spray booth again at age 72.
I’m new to the hobby and looking to get a decent brush after having a horrible experience with a cheap no name brand. Would love to get your updated look at the 289 after all these years!
I am 75 years old and new to spray brushing. I figured since I am retiring soon. I am in to model trains and want to spray paint my scratch built houses. A friend said that my spray brushing has gotten better who taught me. I told him that it was just from watching (Barbados Rex) TH-cam videos. You have become my instructor and thanks to your channel it makes me better.
Nice video and nice setup. I'd recommend not pulling the needle out the back when tearing down the brush for cleaning. Any paint left on the needle is being dragged through the rear of the brush. Remove the nozzle then push out through the front. Also, keep a close eye on those tiny nozzles. Drop one on the floor and it's like it fell into a black hole!! I've lost track of how often I've spent 20 minutes crawling around on the floor of my garage to find a dropped nozzle. I make a habit now of holding the airbrush way back over the middle of the bench so if I fumble it, tiny parts will fall on the bench and hopefully not disappear onto the floor. I love the little pressure regulator on the smaller airbrush. What a great idea. I see that you can buy small ones that fit in-line in the air-hose if your airbrush doesn't come with one. May have to invest in a couple of those for my primary brushes. I have about 5 or 6 different brushes and I bought a rotary manifold that has a single hose leading from the compressor and can run 8 separate airlines for multiple brushes. Because you're only using one brush at a time, it maintains pressure, and it saves having to swap hoses (though the quick release couplings do make that a lot easier). Best part is it has separate stands for all the brushes so I can have multiple different brushes, all hooked up and ready to go, and all with their own stand. Digging your use of the dropper for cleaning as well. Squirting the cleaner in and out of the brush looks a lot more efficient than just running the cleaner through several times and occasionally backwashing. Definitely going to give that a go!! Really enjoying your videos!!
some, like the Badger 105 i just got has a big knob thing on the back of the needle so you have to pull it out, stick it in (lol) the rear...lol... it's sketchy but just gotta be careful and shoot some extra cleaner down thru
This is hands down the best airbrush setup video I've seen. I really appreciate how you explain your setup and then show it in action. I just got an airbrush of my own and this really helps me understand each tool and its importance to the process.
I came here to learn more about airbrushing but became amazed at how organized your setup is and the care you take to put everything back in its place. Love it!
Thanks buddy. It's gotten even nicer. I'll have a new updated video walk through on my airbrush set up as there's been a few changes. Be sure to hit the notifications as it will be up this month with an Airbrush giveaway
Great video. Thank you for the walk through of your process. It is very useful to see how others work. You are doing a great service by making these videos. Thank you.
Yes, the parts are interchangeable. I just ordered the Iwata handle for my trigger Mr Hobby airbrush. It's an incredible airbrush that I absolutely recommend to all my subscripers
Very insightful. I'm getting back into modelling after many decades being away and looking to gather all new tools and skills, especially with airbrush. Thanks!
The Procon boy airbrushes are my choice for airbrushes now. I have 2, one (.2 mm nozzle) for acrylics and one (.3mm) for primers and lacquers and other "hot" thinned paints. I also have a Harder and Steenbeck Infinity CR+ (1.5 mm) that I only use when doing really fine lines, and an older Iwata Eclipse HP-CS that I never use anymore. I think the Procon boy must be made in the Iwata factory as they are almost identical. I love the Procon boys have larger paint cups and paint flow valve up the front of the brush. They are very easy to clean and hard to do wrong.
Recently found your channel and I have to say, your vids are some of the most helpful and informative I've found in my past year of returning to the hobby. Awesome setup you have here! (PS- nice to see another Tiger&Bunny fan, those kits are really fun builds)
Have you ever had a problem with spontaneous combustion ? With all the paper towels having Thinner and Acetone on them . Very informative videos I'm really learning alot your a great Instructor . Thanks
Lacquer thinner and acetone don't actually have that problem. Though they can certainly add fuel to something that is on fire and the vapors can mix with air to become explosive, which is part of the reason ventilation is important. The spontaneous combustion of rags issue is caused by things that will heat up as they dry. If you feel a rag with evaporating acetone or lacquer thinner on it, you'll find that the evaporation actually makes them cold. The thing to be be extremely cautions about is is oil based stuff which may contain drying salts such as manganese salts, zirconium salt, and cobalt salt. When these salts are exposed to oxygen, they create heat. Be careful with enamels and "boiled linseed oil". Art grade oil paints (think winsor & newton) may, but often don't, contain drying salts straight out of the tube but it is also a common practice among artists to mix in fast drying mediums (like liquin) which do contain drying salts.
I like the one with trigger seems like it would be handy for priming and big kits. I like the harder and steenbeck evolution silverline because the tip is alot easier to handle because of the size and because I got big fingers. I started with Neo from Iwata and it had the small tip and I spent most of the time looking for it on the floor when I cleaned it. With the harder and steenbeck evolution silverline you will never loose the tip and there cleaning kit is amazing when working with difficult paints. I payed 155$ Canadian for the .2 harder and steenbeck evolution.
Coincidentally, I am using the exact same airbrushes and compressor you are using. Spraygunner is a short drive from my home and I buy most of my airbrush, paint, and related items form them. I reserve my big trigger airbrush for clear coats only. Even though I own several expensive H&S airbrushes, the Procon Boy has become my go-to airbrush.
Procon Boy is my favorite airbrush hands down. It's a pleasure to use and easy to clean. SprayGunner is great. They finally gave me an affiliate link cause I told them I recommend them constantly
Checking out your channel and seeing some of your preferred channels, it's obvious you're one of the good guys. Love your set up, work and highly educational uploads. More then worth to subscribe and to follow. Thanks for the effort and greetings from Holland!
Iwata has a trigger airbrush similar to the one in this video that I’ve been drooling over for a few years now, I didn’t realize that Mr Hobby brush came with a nozzle with air fins however
Well this style of airbrush is a standard shape and size across the board. I would consider a pistol style airbrush. I've been using one more often lately
7:00 This airbrush and this fan shaped nozzle seems like a good option for applying satin varnish or any sealant coat to lock in the underlying layers of a kit prior to applying weathering with oils and pigments.
I've got two Creos Proconn double action and two single action (I have two places.) They're very good brushes - made in Japan - extremely high quality and reasonably priced. Excellent spray patterns. However, I strongly urge anyone buying a Proconn to buy a nozzle cleaning tool & replacement kit (Spraygunner sells them.) The nozzles on the Creos brushes are all extremely small. Creos recommends not removing the needle and cleaning by back-flushing. This will not work indefinitely - trust me - you will need to clean the nozzle and the needle sometimes. And getting that nozzle off is really tricky - the removal tool makes the job a snap. I believe the tool will also work on Iwata HPC brushes, although you might not need to remove the small part of the nozzle there very often. I use the Proconns a lot - although I'd take the Iwata HPC to a desert island. Either are better than Harder Steenbeck in my view - I've got three of those. (Can't afford a Mercedes, just do my best to keep the hobby industry moving along.)
Super-helpful to see everything in real time. What size pipettes were you using during the cleaning and do you have a link to the brand? I've found pretty mixed reviews on disposable pipettes. Thanks for all the great insights and help.
I enjoy your videos greatly, Mr. Rex, and this one in particular. I recently purchased a PS-270 and like you, I am not fond of the air hose which came with it. Will an Iwata air hose, sans quick disconnect fitting, work with it?
Thanks for watching. I've since replaced the compressor with a Tooty from Spray Gunner. It's awesome. This one here lasted me years. I just started getting too loud that it was interfering when I filmed.
@@barbatosrex9473 Awesome! I was specifically looking at your compressor solution, how did you read my mind? I was about to pull the trigger on your old compressor type shown herein, then looked at the Tooty as you had mentioned. Went to the Amazon link you shared and found saw the npt adapter issue it comes with and noticed yours with the corrected adapter fittings too. Does the Tooty come out the box free of issues and how do you like it thus far? You are a wealth of knowledge and thank you very much!
Sir. I have a quick wuestion but first i wanted to tell you how I really appreciate your videos. They have helped me a lot and I have bought a lot of the items that you recommend. Thank you very much. I have a question though; I bought the PS 290 airbrush and I have used it a couple times with your basic cleaning, that kind of stuff. I went to use it yesterday and it wouldn’t work and I took it apart today and I did a good internal cleaning on it but it only flows liquid if the needle is pulled back. And if the needle is pulled back (maybe somewhere around 1/32 of an inch) then it makes the thinner that I had in there drip through the nozzel on its own without the the trigger being pulled. If I push the needle forward so as to stop the drip flow I get no liquid through the nozzle when I pull the trigger, I will only get air. Do you have any ideas what this could be? Thank you very much John greenwood
Thanks buddy, I will be doing an update to this video as I've gotten many new brushed and a new compressor. That video will be up this month hopefully with an airbrush to giveaway
Is brush painting with acrylics on plastic car models a good way to get a smooth finish, instead of airbrushing. Right now, I don’t want to get into airbrushing or setup a paint booth. Also, it’s still cold outside and not favorable for painting. I read some modelers have gotten a good finish with no brush strokes showing. Thanks.
Love the videos but I should inform you that on your spray booth exhaust fan, it's likely hurting more than helping by putting those scratch Brite pads behind the filter, they are very restrictive to airflow so a couple things are going to happen, first, your exhaust air volume will be cut down to less cfm than the unit is advertised to work at, second, it will likely shorten the life of your motor and surely draw more power to run the fan do to the higher than design static pressure the motor is now faced with. When it comes to any type of fans, any added restriction over what the manufacturer specs the setup for this will be true for. Just a heads up. Thx again
You should have an exhaust fan in the spray booth and if you clean the airbrush with water, use hot water. Check out my latest video on cleaning Vallejo Acrylic paint from your airbrush
Does the P270 airbrush support 0.5mm needle because I couldn’t find the kit or needle for it on the website? And I seen your review on the Vallejo airbrush paints. If you have any link for the 0.5mm needle and kit for the P270, I would really appreciate it.
Any way I can bother you for a link to get that same cable you got for your compressor? I’m extremely new to this and am clueless and really don’t want to get a wrong cable or a junky one.
Cool tour! I just had some issues following you at certain parts of the vids as you were moving the camera very quickly, maybe something to keep in mind for future vids. Would be pretty cool if you could show off some of your painted kits too ;)
This was a fantastic info video, and extremely helpful, if I may ask one question, I have a jar of Tamiya flat white, and it goes grainy in the paint cup, any idea why this is happening? Any help would be great, take care and keep safe, bedt regards from Australia.

dont waste your money on cordless battery i try them and their trash just go to compressor you can get pretty good deals for both airdbrush and compressor
@@oscarponce4137 you probably got a amazon cheapo one. The one from No-Name brand by spray gunner is amazing. From everyone ive heard from its about as good as a traditional air compressor. Barbatos did a review on it
Thank you for all the great videos! As the Testors booth is no longer available, do you have a recommendation for a good (affordable) spray booth available in the US? I’m new, but am looking to spray both acrylics and lacquers. Thanks!
Hi... I've enjoy this video very much as I am returning to scale modeling after a 40 hiatus (life and all that come with it). I've viewed another one of your video in which you show a small vapor trap (sadly I don't recall the video) If you would, could you tell me the name of the manufacture of the small vapor trap. Thank you and keep up the great video as I've have found them most informative.
Awesome guide. ? I just recently tried to add pearl powder into my paint and for some reason it sputtered the airbrush. I have looked for guidance on what pressure, how much powder to use, and what nozzle size is best suited for airbrushing, but nothing really came up to answer my questions. Im using grex tg3 nozzle size .3, and an iwata neo trn1 with a .3 nozzle. Both sputtered. But worked perfectly after cleaning and using just straight paint that was only thinned.
Get the Patriot. It happens to be on sale here, get the 3 in 1, it comes with all 3 needle sizes. A bargain at $88. Grab it here before they sell out spraygunner.com?aff=10
hey i got a gsi creos mr proconboy gs-290 airbrush with the.5 needle need a new needle but cant seem to find replacement anyone know were i might find one looked online but cant seem to find anything
Hi, do you think we need to separate AB for different use (e.g. one specifically for primer, another for clear coat / metallic paint / color - which is pricey) ?
Very nice video. Just stumbled onto your channel thanks to TH-cam recommendation. New into modeling. Do you have a video of the process you use for color changes when your in the middle of a build without doing a full cleaning?
Not a video dedicated to it, I have another video on spraying acrylics perfect every time that has a little more info. I will make one just for cleaning it quickly, that's a good idea for one 👍 thanks for watching
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks for the reply. I just found that video last night and started watching it. I got an Iwata airbrush and compressor as a gift. Going to pick up a bunch of spoons and cardboard to start practicing before trying to tackle a model with it.
It might not be fuzz, it can also be that the paint is drying before it hits the object. Try lower pressure and get closer to the object you are spraying. If it is staticfuzz then I would recomend you to blow air on it constantly even after spraying until it dries. If it is acrylic or lacqueer it will dry really quick.
I have fallen in love with that Procon PS-290 - Can you run it on that ZENY Pro 1/5 HP 3 liter compressor? I have the same one, so I just wanted to make sure before I buy it. I am ordering from another country, so cannot return it
@@barbatosrex9473 I just saw that I wasn't subscribed, but that mistake is corrected. Yours is definitely the best model/airbrush channel. And you answer questions. I have learned so much watching your videos. So thank you for making these videos, and for taking time to answer our questions : )
They don't harm a quality airbrush. I actually dip a paper towel in either and wipe down my airbrush to clean it up. Just be sure your brush is a high quality chrome plated unit. I have a GSI Mr Hobby, Iwata and Harder & Steenbeck and all are safe from those solvents, and that includes the O rings as they're made of solvent resistant Teflon
Do you make those clips or buy them? I think they'd be great for wargaming minis. Right now I have to put them on pill bottle or similar and it's a pain in the ass.

Thanks.
Smart thing to use the cat scratch for placing the clips!
way more economical than purchasing those parts base made by mr hobby
The PS-289 comes with the .3 mm needle. Is that the same one you are talking about at 4:50 but with the bigger needle?
No, I have the 270 that came with a 0.2mm and I upgraded to a 0.3mm for it
@@barbatosrex9473 Thank you, Sir. 🐈
Hi, the Air Compressor is out of stock. Any suggestions? I looked at the Iwata Smart Jet Pro Airbrush Compressor and
Love the videos but I should inform you that on your spray booth exhaust fan, it's likely hurting more than helping by putting those scratch Brite pads behind the filter, they are very restrictive to airflow so a couple things are going to happen, first, your exhaust air volume will be cut down to less cfm than the unit is advertised to work at, second, it will likely shorten the life of your motor and surely draw more power to run the fan do to the higher than design static pressure the motor is now faced with. When it comes to any type of fans, any added restriction over what the manufacturer specs the setup for this will be true for. Just a heads up. Thx again
Hi, I'm just starting out and i love your video thank you so much.
Your welcome buddy and good luck 👍
Is there a specific brand of quick disconnect fittings to buy, or are they all the same?
Great video, thank, you. I am going to use only water acrylic paints. Can I just use water to clean airbrush.
You should have an exhaust fan in the spray booth and if you clean the airbrush with water, use hot water. Check out my latest video on cleaning Vallejo Acrylic paint from your airbrush
Do you just simply use lacquer thinner to clean out the air brush when you use lacquer?
@Barbatos Rex where did you find the "cleaning" tank for cleaning your spray gun?
Does the P270 airbrush support 0.5mm needle because I couldn’t find the kit or needle for it on the website? And I seen your review on the Vallejo airbrush paints. If you have any link for the 0.5mm needle and kit for the P270, I would really appreciate it.
Any way I can bother you for a link to get that same cable you got for your compressor? I’m extremely new to this and am clueless and really don’t want to get a wrong cable or a junky one.
Even though it is about a year old, what universal quick-release adapter works along with the specific snap-on compressor hose?
How big is the quick connector on the airbrush side? Will it be compatible with a Tamiya HG airbrush?
What are you thinning it with?
@@barbatosrex9473 standard tamiya thinner, I was thi king maybe the jar is a little old, thanks for that quick reply, I'm in Australia and it is 2252hrs.
@@lesthiele4921 I would say it's the paint going bad. Try thinning it with rubbing alcohol, if that don't work then it's bad paint
i love your videos thank you so much I been leaning so much from you
So glad I can be of help. Posting another tonight. Any questions you have don't hesitate to ask
I even paper towel in front of the washable filter as a throw away filter
would you recommend a beginner to go with this traditional compressor set up, or with one of those cordless battery powered compressors?
dont waste your money on cordless battery i try them and their trash just go to compressor you can get pretty good deals for both airdbrush and compressor
It comes with the compressor but you can buy them separately here spraygunner.com?aff=10 just search "moisture trap"
But worked perfectly after cleaning and using just straight paint that was only thinned.
you need a .5 mm or larger needle
You're going to need a larger needle a d nozzle for the. At least a. 5mm
I’m going to buy a new airbrush with a #5 needle. Do you recommend the Pro Con Boy PS274 or the Patriot 105-1. I believe these are the right numbers.
Get the Patriot. It happens to be on sale here, get the 3 in 1, it comes with all 3 needle sizes. A bargain at $88. Grab it here before they sell out
spraygunner.com?aff=10
hey i got a gsi creos mr proconboy gs-290 airbrush with the.5 needle need a new needle but cant seem to find replacement anyone know were i might find one looked online but cant seem to find anything
good show keep them coming
I have a cheap airbrush a with a fixed cup how can I upgrade it without spending loads of money on a new airbrush
great set up good ideas!
Thank you, and thanks for watching
Just found your channel. Have seen your playlists what's with all the spoons?
Do you literally use them for testing paints.
Oh yeah, spoons are the backbone to this channel 😉 you'll see soon enough
Great shop! I’m a new sub. Would love a full room tour unless you’ve already done one?
Check out my video Paint racks and shelves, it's almost a full room tour from a few weeks ago
Thanks for the tip. 👍
What is the benefit to changing from .2mm to .3mm tip?
Another excellent video, sir! I've been plagued with static fuzz getting onto my painted objects lately... any tips? (I don't have a booth...)
It might not be fuzz, it can also be that the paint is drying before it hits the object. Try lower pressure and get closer to the object you are spraying. If it is staticfuzz then I would recomend you to blow air on it constantly even after spraying until it dries. If it is acrylic or lacqueer it will dry really quick.
what airbrush hose do you recommend thats good for the no name rechargeable air compressor ?
I use a No Name black braided hose but I have several hoses including cheap ones from Amazon and they all work fine, no problems
Which airbrush do you recommend I do model car the trigger one or the proto boy airbrush? It would be my main airbrush.
Check out one of my newer videos on the Badger 105 Patriot, that's a perfect airbrush for car models
I have fallen in love with that Procon PS-290 - Can you run it on that ZENY Pro 1/5 HP 3 liter compressor? I have the same one, so I just wanted to make sure before I buy it. I am ordering from another country, so cannot return it
Yes, it works perfect with it. After you use a Procon you'll wonder how you got by without it
@@barbatosrex9473 I just saw that I wasn't subscribed, but that mistake is corrected. Yours is definitely the best model/airbrush channel. And you answer questions.
I have learned so much watching your videos.
So thank you for making these videos, and for taking time to answer our questions : )
Great video! Thank you!
Thanks for watching
Long shot, but has anyone experienced the "quarter turn back flush" just not working?
I just can't seem to do it with mine
Are Acetone and Lacq Thinner both safe for most airbrushes? Somebody told me they eat the metal finish and the internal O-rings over time?
They don't harm a quality airbrush. I actually dip a paper towel in either and wipe down my airbrush to clean it up. Just be sure your brush is a high quality chrome plated unit. I have a GSI Mr Hobby, Iwata and Harder & Steenbeck and all are safe from those solvents, and that includes the O rings as they're made of solvent resistant Teflon
Do you make those clips or buy them? I think they'd be great for wargaming minis. Right now I have to put them on pill bottle or similar and it's a pain in the ass.
Some I made with alligator clips and dowels, the others I got from Amazon and eBay. Really come in handy
