Don't think so. I forget who it was but there was a dude who said bedrest on its own wasn't really gonna help TB. Think it was just a matter of chance and how strong your immune system was. BUT I will say, Arthur constantly pushing himself (especially towards the end) definitely shortened the time he had left by quite a bit.

The earliest point I notice Arthur start to cough is when you rob a homestead with Javier, that family that speaks weird, when he pushes the boxes to get the hidden money he starts coughing which may just be him being old and the boxes heavy but I always saw it as the start.

I think what made Arthur's end even more tragic than John's was because there was no escape. At least with Marston, he and his family were able to run away for a few years - but Morgan had nowhere to go but six feet underground; his story wasn't about the endless cycle of bloodshed and revenge as depicted in RDR 1, rather it was all about the acceptance of one's being and fate (almost the complete opposite of the moral/s in RDR 1).
You can't finish the story but at least the camp members well be there forever you can go fish and hunt travel and complet some of the sidemission (not all)

I figured out he was sick probably a quarter, maybe half-way through. I noticed the cough, diminishing stats and then the sickly look as the game progressed-which was a clever way to portray that. I wasn't 100% it was TB, but had an idea due to the cough, diseases that were prevalent at the time, and western movies-which Rockstar is often influenced by (movies.) When he got his diagnosis, I was like, "I KNEW IT!" I was still hoping that the Natives would have a cure some how, which I thought might be the case due to the storyline of helping them.
i knew the moment he was diagnosed. and as expected by the game, tried to do the best i could, tried to enjoy playing Arthur as best as possible until the end

After many playthroughs I just learned to hunt all the legendary animals, fish all the legendary fish, craft the legends of the east sachel, get all the upgrades to the camp, and craft all the outfits from the trapper. After all that then it's time to cry as you ride your horse to the Downs ranch 😭
Some good hints were given. Mentioning consumption repeatedly. The obvious coughing in the face as the wife pleads with Arthur that he is sick, and a cut-scene with eerie music that Intentionally simulates wheezing by the dragging of the fingers over the strings.
I have a tendency to not really listen when first playing a game, especially these little collection missions that I thought were insignificant. I absolutely DID NOT understand how he suddenly got sick, googled it afterwards, and spent my next playthrough watching like a hawk to catch it. I tried everything to save him thinking it was avoidable...
Penicillin wasn't even discovered until 1928 (29 years after arthur died) and it wouldn't be until another 12 years before it was developed as the first anti-biotic. Arthur was dead as a doornail the second Thomas coughed on him.
The first successful treatments for TB were 1854. But it wasn't a common practice yet. The first real cure wasn't until 1924 when antibiotics were first discovered. The first mass treatments or "cures" were in 1942, was a mainstream common practice by 1944.

I know its 14 years old game but It came out on pc this year. And to this date I didnt have anything. I just bought pc and and played red dead 2. And I was gonna start rdr 1 today and I am spoiled. 😢. I mean its fait but I didnt expected it.
In the year red dead 2 was supposed to take place, only like 8% of people with it actually died. They made him weak purely for emotional response. As much 80 proof or higher alcohol he was consuming he would have probably been good without a doctors help. I googled the stats as soon as i got to St. Denis, and I was pissed. 😂
Also, TB isn't a "one and done" infection kind of deal, it usually takes repeated exposure over a period of time to contract it. Downes coughing in Arthur likely wouldn't have infected him, but you know who DID have some kind of respiratory illness, and was in close quarters with Arthur repeatedly? Hosea, who even mentioned having some kind of cough, or something, and attributes it to being on the mountain. For me, this makes it way more poetic as a source of infection, as Arthur's time with the gang is literally what killed him, rather than some throwaway errand.
Man, I wish the game allowed players to go deeper and find alternative endings, like finding a cure. Basically, every decision should have multiple paths, like in RPG games. I think that's what's missing in Rockstar games , their weakness is in replay value. It's not that interesting and feels like the game is repetitive, hopefully that will change in gta6
