  • Dr. Amy Sarow worked with a medical animator to capture what a typical high-frequency hearing loss looks like inside the cochlea. The video shows the journey of sound through the open ear canal, through the eardrum and ear bones and into the cochlea where hearing information is processed before it travels to the brain.

    If the hearing cells are damaged, how can any amount of amplification regain those frequencies?

      Good question. In many cases the adjacent hair cells can pick up the slack and still get the information to the brain. Louder sounds also stimulate the inner rows of hair cells if the outer cells are dead or damaged. In some cases people do fully lose frequencies but our ears do what they can to be resilient.
