Fixed Gear Bikepacking Made Me Hate Cycling (For a Bit) 😓

  • In preparation for my 775 mile (1250 km) fixed gear bike touring/bikepacking trip from Sacramento to San Diego, CA, I hit the road with my bike buddy Matt for a quick 2 day/100 mile fixed gear bikepacking trip to test out my gear, my thighs, and my will. This ride was way more difficult than I imagined, and made me thoroughly hated cycling (for a few days).

    Yo, I'm not telling others how to ride... but NorCal to SoCal got some big hills. Roadies can easily get 30-40mph+ on some of those descents. Considering how tired you'll be after hundreds of miles, and all that extra weight, consider brakes?

    Hmm, IMO Nitto bullmoose bar is comfortable for long distance riding. I`ve done a 600km touring with it, and numerous one-day epics on a fixed gear or single speed bikes. The problem may be with the rest of your bike fit, including saddle to bar drop.

    I'd say you should think about changing your set up for bike packing. A rear bag at least or even a rack (that rack you need hardware to mount would work to carry your sling bag). Change that ratio, the more weight on the bike to lower the ratio needs to be. It might be better if you get low-rider rack on and get two small front panniers to lower the weight, that will help with handling. You also don't want to wear a bag find some way to mount it to the bike that will help more than you think. Last but not least You got this!!! Swapping things around to dial in the bike is part of the "fun" of bike touring.

    Not too long ago (before the hot season hit Las Vegas...) I did a trial run with all my camp gear and packed it on two of my bikes and then rode them around my neighborhood. The trekking bike did great and my e-bike(which has a 750watt mid drive motor kit on it) did even way better! (So easy :)) I will be moving soon to a new location in Vegas and hopefully by the end of the hot season, I will begin my local journeys of bike touring here in Nevada and then to further distances around Nevada; Grand Canyon (AZ), New Mexico, Colorado (rocky mountains), Utah (lake Tahoe), and back to Nevada...for the southern section, then there will be the Northern five states around Nevada sometime in the future too. Plan, be smart in what to bring and how to pack it on your bike, and of course my advice; before you do a long run, do practice runs or condition yourself for longer rides. As God says; Be ready...for bikepacking; prepare, practice to be ready...Happy fixie bike touring travels :)

    This is borderline unreasonably dangerous - I've tried it before, and that front rack set up is NOT fun for the front wheel handling.
    What really helps is lowering the front tire pressure by quite a bit more, and for that terrain probably getting a knobby 32c. Have fun!

    • @WesternUranus
      @WesternUranus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's actually a very bad advice, the added weight upfront will make a higher pressure necessary.
      I bikepacked 80 miles fixed in a day to go on vacation, 65lbs setup with 45 lbs on the front rack on 28c gatorskins (with me on top of that weighing 190lbs). Had I put less than 100psi in the front tire I would have punctured on every gravel sections and not made it to my destination before night.
      Also it would have been horrible to steer at low speed when I was climbing. As the weight increase you need MORE pressure, never less.

    • @Aubreykun
      @Aubreykun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WesternUranus As the terrain gets worse you need lower pressure, as your weight goes up you need higher pressure. It's a balancing act but even with 210-220lbs in the calculator my 620x32c wheels like roughly 55-58lbs of pressure for the crummy patched roads around here.
      I regularly carry 25-35lbs of groceries, and the bike is an old late 70s thing that weighs 35lbs by itself, so I've been running that range and had 0 issues.
      However I will say that I use a rear rack and panniers, because front baskets are horrible. Your weight shifts to the front when braking so adding yet more mass there is just asking for blowouts.

    • @WesternUranus
      @WesternUranus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Aubreykun 32c hold so much more air than 28c that I understand it would not be an issue lowering pressure a bit.
      On a 28 you'd get a pinch flat on the first pothole if you get too low so the cons far outweigh the pros.
      Never using a front rack ever in my life though, it was so sketchy balance-wise and when I unloaded it after 6 hours I got so used to powering over the weight I would wobble at low speed. it was so weird

    Since in the videos it's an "already done deal" there can be no advise! But if known before... I would had advised you: the footwear you used was not the most comfortable for that distance, the weight should have been distributed differently (More of the weight in back panniers), a 22t cog and at least one hand brake(preferable in the front) Anyway it looked like a lot of fun and that's what counts!

    you've ridden cleats before, just go with that + a quick bike fitting before that long mile. you feet, ankles and knees will thank you!

    • @nadsv93
      @nadsv93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bebo on the contrary, properly set up cleats prevent injuries and a lot of touring bikers chose SPD/PD, as do a lot of touring bike pedal lines. The others chose flats because they want to move around a lot while off the bike.
      you have a repetitive motion with or without the cleats, cleats just stabilise your feet and prevent tendinitis and misalignment.
      I did search your claims though and found no evidence supporting them.

    • @nadsv93
      @nadsv93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bebo bmx and mtb don't need long distance cycling. and you fall more often off of those than a touring bike. it's literally on every health article about cycling: clears, clipless or not, prevent foot injury by keeping the foot securely in place. there's that other part where it also says "misaligned cleats will provoke injury" which also happens with a badly positioned saddle or hood lever.

    • @nadsv93
      @nadsv93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bebo pedals in midfoot? ok, we don't need to talk anymore

    • @nadsv93
      @nadsv93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bebo i don't care about speed, i haven't commented about speed and this whole thread wasn't about speed. but to prevent injury.
      you just never liked more-than-average cycling set-ups and will do everything to support that idea. good for you if you're twice as fast than people with cleats while riding flats on midfoot. I would really like to see a youtube video of that since we're here, until then it's just empty words 🥲

    • @nadsv93
      @nadsv93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bebo mate, there's a hard sole/plate in between the cleat and your foot, plus a normal sole for cushion, nothing is poking anywhere. it also prevents the tendon of your foot from overextending. anyone that was remotely interested about cleats, just googling them and reading after the title as well, would've found out they have a hard plate inside.
      to be more explicit, pedaling with cleat shoes is like pedaling on a flat pedal made exactly for your size and width + some cushioning

    Lose the weight of the backpack on your body, put it in panniers. You still have to move the weight, you just don't have to carry it every inch of the ride. Yeah, it means a rear rack & its weight, so what. There's a ton of convertible backpack panniers too, hard to choose. Mount a brake already, there's no call for being unnecessarily dangerous.
