  • Fixed gear bikes are among the worst bikes to go bike touring with: you're always in the wrong gear, the weight you're carrying makes you go even slower, uphills AND downhills are miserable, and they have little to no mounts for racks to get weight off of your back. But I'm doing a 2 week tour on my fixed gear anyway. Here's my fixed gear setup for touring.

    Good luck with the trip. Just make sure your front brake cable is long enough in case you decide to flip your stem. The bike looks front heavy, would also recommend putting as much weight on the frame as possible.

    I'm glad to see you riding fixed for long distances. I rode the Seattle to Portland bicycle ride in 2015 and 2017 on my fixed gear bike. 200 miles in two days. I was 70 and 72. No need to carry camping gear though. There was a truck to do that. I set my bike up Tour de France style. Until 1938 the Tour de France was ridden fixed gear. They used flip flop hubs and had a large cog for hills. The hill climbing cog was allowed to be on a freewheel. Makes going downhill easier! It seems most downhills seem to follow immediately after an uphill climb. The small fixed cog for flat and moderate hills. Have a good time. I sure love riding my fixed gear bike.

    I love that you're doing this. I'm planning my first couple bike packing trips this year on my single speed (yes, I know...) and a 1000 mile one next year. 48x16 in Colorado mountains. Your videos have inspired me to ride so much. Thanks homie.

    Cheering you on. Taking notes. Love the gear video idea! I did an AT thru hike back in 03’ and discovered single speed->fixed gear after. And so, bikepacking through my beloved state fixed makes my brain tingle. Distance hiking say this-touring greeks correct me if this doesn’t translate. … ‘the thought comes, often, that you should quit and go home, but then image being back home and you would want to be out on the adventure-so, just keep trucking.’ This got me through the moments that were to hard for my body and existentially were to existential. Really appreciate your work, inspired to ride, even today. Peace on your trip.

    Nice setup! Super impressed that it is still only 36 lbs fully loaded. That’s probably what some department store bikes weigh on their own. Did you check if your cable housing is long enough should you decide to flip the stem up? Also, how does the bike handle with all that weight up front?

    • @HaniJIsmail
      @HaniJIsmail 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i dont usually see Zach reply to youtube comments but based on experience...it makes the bike handle like shit lol takes some time getting used to.

    • @ShredST
      @ShredST 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 36 lbs because he's not packing much. He didn't pack any camp food or cooking equipment. My guess is someone else will be carrying that stuff.

    • @drbobjohnson812
      @drbobjohnson812 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShredST I believe there will be a back pack once the adventure begins. In the prior vid when Zach and a friend did an overnight there was a backpack or shoulder bag and his friend did bring the camp stove

      @@HaniJIsmail That's my experience with my bike too but some bikes are designed to have lighter steering in anticipation of a front load changing the steering, was wondering where the wabi fell on that spectrum

    • @psychoaiko666
      @psychoaiko666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Than get one;)
      It'll feel weird at first, but you'll get used to it in no time. At some point you might notice you've grown so accustomed to fixed gear riding, that when you ride a "normal" bike you'll ride it as if it were a fixed gear (l had to borrow a bike once, the upright position felt super weird n wonky).
      If you ever have any technical questions, just post them under a recent Zach Gallardo vid, either me or Bebo can probably help you out with info (although Bebo can be a bit of a troll 😅)
      One thing I can tell you already, if you buy a complete bike you'll probably have to change the gearing. Because they normally install 48/16 gearing on those. And that is the worst gearing there is, because it has only one point on the tire where it skids.

    Nice! I love the bike and the trip idea. Among the gear you forgot to add the weight of the video camera and related items for recording and posting the progression of the trip...right??? I hope...
    Zach, one thing that really worries me is the rear hub axle so short on threads, only half the axle nut is holding...dangerous in my opinion.
    Have a safe trip and enjoy !!

    If you find you want a lower gear later you can always swap out the front chaining for something lower. I'd go with something like a 40 and use the 40/19 and them have the 22 as a back up. It's too bad Dingles are out of production and now hard to find, they really would shine for fixed gear bike touring.

    Mount a rear rack and get that backpack weight off of your body. Yes, you'll still have to pedal the weight forward but there's no call to use your body as support, that's very fatiguing.. The clamps you're used on your fork, use two per seat stay, one bottomed out at the track ends, one bottomed on the 'brake' bridge. They're probably 1/2", get them in stainless from Amazon.
    There's a jillion panniers to choose from, quite a few (pricey) convertible backpack/panniers should those suit your tastes.
    While you're riding with a brake, see if you don't find the fluid, Zen space of fixed less interrupted by the threshold of panic. I can sort of see the appeal of that threshold of panic, but, not really. Your back tires will last soo much longer, fine brake pads are much less costly than fine tires.
    A brake on fixed is good for knees, seriously.

    I do 38 mile trips and I ended up getting myself some BMX bars with a five inch rise. Way more comfortable, I run 35 mm tires. Just waiting on my new seat and seat stem then I’ll be super comfortable. Eventually I hope to do 100 mile trips. It just so relaxing and fun! Cars suck 😂

    A fixie is not a decent bike on typical touring routes tbh, that ability to cruize might do a lot for your safety. BTW I highly appreciate placing loads of stuff on front instead of on back, it is just proper way to load your bike.

    As much as I enjoy fixed gear, I find they are untenable for prolonged slow speed riding. Just no effective way to relieve the constant pressure on the perineum. You can't coast and your not pedaling hard enough to suspend your weight. I'd seriously consider running freewheel or at least having the option for that kind of distance..
