  • This ambient jam is about using delays to explore the spaces in between the notes of the main melody, composing with delays, featuring the Arturia MicroFreak synth and the Zoom MS-70CDR effect pedal.
    My music on Bandcamp: waveformer42.bandcamp.com/
    The patches for the MicroFreak and the MS-70 are included below.
    The jam consists two simple 16-step sequences, that are introduced at the beginning of the jam.
    The MicroFreak patch is a basic virtual analog patch, with the Cyclic Envelope modifying filter cutoff, and a random LFO (slow, retriggering for every note) modifying Cyclic Envelope fall time and oscillator timbre (VAnalog oscillator, timbre varies from square wave from narrow to 50% to full oscillator sync). During the jam, I play with timbre (square wave), shape (triangle/saw wave), filter cutoff and resonance, Cyclic Envelope fall time and amount, Amplitude Envelope attack, release/decay, sustain. I also use the spice and dice functionality a lot. I also change the sequencer rate from 1/1 to 1/8T through all the steps inbetween.
    There are three delays in series on the MS-70CDR. The timing of the delays are set (in milliseconds) carefully to fill in the 7 "free" 32th note steps in a melody played in 4/4 at 120 BPM. By turning delays on and off, I can choose which of those 7 free steps to fill up, which greatly affects both the perceived melody and the rhythmic feel. The random LFO on the MicroFreak changes timbre, which affects perceived melody and rhythm. And the spice and dice affects the Amplitude Envelope and the notes (on/off, slight variations), which also to a great extent affects perceived rhythm and melody.
    Delay 1 is 9 32th notes (563 ms). Delay 2 is 18 32th notes (1125 ms). Delay 3 is 36 32th notes (2250 ms). Together they fill the 7 free 32-th note steps. Delay 1 is the "busiest" one, so I turn this off for the fastest sequencer rates.
    The Zoom MS-70CDR patches are included below. To load a patch into the MS-70, connect your MS-70 to your computer using a USB cable, go to g200kg.github.io/zoom-ms-util..., right-click an available patch slot, select "Import Patch from text", and paste in this text.
    Zoom MS-70CDR effect:

    The MicroFreak patch is named "SpacesInBtwnWF", and can be downloaded from the files section of the Arturia MicroFreak facebook group.
    The audio is recorded on a Korg KP2S and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on iPhoneX. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 15.

    They should add like a second Like button that only becomes active after 6 months, so those of us who come back for a second helping can like it again...

      Is a wonderful idea. The button need to be visible only to people who like it before. This is really useful because can introduce a new metric about followers and not only new viewers. I think TH-cam is only interested in the growing of the channel and not in his fidelity. Maybe Google is watching.

    This is beautiful music, and I like being able to see what you are doing with the MicroFreak, and Zoom effects, while you are creating it.
    I have an older version of the Zoom multi effects pedal you are using, and I think it is the perfect companion for synthesizers, and keyboards in general.
    With it's stereo in/out and ability to chain 6 effects, from a selection of 86, it is a monster that anybody who plays synth, keyboard, guitar, bass, should consider having in their sonic arsenal.
    I also like the MicroFreak, and this video has finally pushed me over the edge, to buying one.

      At the end of the day it all depends on what you wanna do or how you can work with the best. Some people need rooms full of gear, others create awesome stuff with lightweight amounts of gear. There is no right or wrong. Only a personal workflow and way of going your way. And budget is of course an important factor as well. Speaking for myself, it took me a lot of time to find out what i really need.

    • @Dubstepconcept
      @Dubstepconcept 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your second sentence is the exact reason people have a room full of equipment. People buy what they see others play and think that's how they got their sound. It reminds me of the RDJ quote "If I finish a job in 30 minutes, its because I trained 10 years for that job. You pay me for the years, not the minutes." People see these "minutes" and try to replicate it with what they see, 99 times out of a hundred its the performer not the gear.

    Had a tough day yesterday with the MicroFreak, MB 2S, DB Impact all into a four channel mixer and then into a Rega amp and JBL speakers and all I got were angry dog fart noises. Turned it all off and watched TV. Today wired in a Line 6 UX2 audio interface to the computer from the mix board and to da Garage Band is recording the audio of the MicroFreak in time with the DB Impact and the MB 2s and it sounds to my ears amazing especially with surf sounds in the background. Now I am sitting back listening to 43 minutes of where my next steps go. It is like following a master's footsteps through a snowstorm and I am so very grateful for your posts.

    love how you are modulating everything. its beautiful. friend of mine loaned me a microfreak and i just never got in to it. i should have spent a little more time with it. i think i was frustrated mostly that the keys are not how i pictured like a buchla easel, rolli, or say how the keys work in apps like animoog. i just got disappointed and moved on. this makes me want to pick one up and spend more time now. i found your video i guess because i just bought one of those zoom effects processors. your video is a great example of what it can do also. thanks!

    This is great, your videos helped me make the decision to buy a microfreak, you get some lovely sounds out of it plus I already had the zoom ms-70cdr and I'm really enjoying using them together.
    I have a problem though, I'm having difficulty getting the lfo, arp and sequences to sync to midi, I'm sure I've tried all the sync options but no luck, all I can get to work is my sequencer(deluge) sending note data.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      boa thanks 😊. It’s a great combo. I’ve had no problems syncing the MicroFreak arp and sequencer to my Circuit. Just need to make sure the Circuit sends clock and midi start/stop, and that the MicroFreak receives it. If I have MIDI problems, I use a midi monitor application on my PC or Mac to watch incoming MIDI messages, to make sure the Circuit transmits the correct messages.

    Hi waveformer, I just bought the microfreak and I stumbled upon your channel. You got a new sub! One thing that got me curious (more like "I really dont understand what is going on) is the concept of the 7 "free" 32th note step in 4/4-120 bpm and how you actually set up the timing of the 3 different delays. Would you elaborate that?
    The only thing I managed to get was the 32th single time of 62.5 ish which you multiplied for 9/18/36 but I'm missing the whole idea behind it.

Is there a way to do this with a midi maybe so it is synced every time i change a preset?Im not familiar with gate and clock etc..i tried to midi out the 101 to midi in at looper and then midi out to the freak but when is a sequence loaded it plays it and i dont want that.. Awesome video!
    Would you recommend the MicroFreak as a first synth?
    I'm new to this stuff and was thinking whether I should shoot for a Blofeld, Deemmind 12D or start with a MicroFreak.
    Currently my work is centralized around FL Studio, but I thought I'd try a DAW-less setup in time.
    Would you advise? Thanks!

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hm. I’m really happy with the MicroFreak. And I think it’s a good first synth, with one knob per function, mostly. The DeepMind sounds really good and I’d love to have one. It also has lots of Sliders and knobs and is probably a very good first synth. It’s more expensive than the MicroFreak, though.

  • @TROGULAR10000
    @TROGULAR10000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the amazing notes. Just wondering you normalize in Audacity to get the loudest wave file possible? I wonder if you have to eliminate any peaks before your do that? I was using a zoom camera to capture live audio and found it very cumbersome to bring it up to a level that would then be acceptable for TH-cam. I used a ShotCut and a loudness filter and a trial and error but if I can extract the wave files and just normalize in Audacity to maximize volume that might be easier.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normalizing doesn’t flatten the peaks. It just increases the volume on everything. If you want to flatten peaks, you need a compressor. Audacity has that too. If you really want to master the track, even out peaks in different frequencies, etc, something like Ozone from iZotope is really good.

    Dude, this is great. I have both Korg Multistomps for guitar, they're great. You are creating some magic with this. What's your thoughts on the Microfreak versus the Volca stuff?

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The MicroFreak and the Volcas are very different. You can get great sounds from the Volcas, and I do enjoy the Volca FM and the Volca Drums a lot, but the MicroFreak is hard to beat, with its exceptionally varied oscillators - from basic analog-style waveforms to wavetables, granular synthesis, sample playback, physical modeling, and lots more. The modulation matrix is also very powerful. The arpeggiator and the spice and dive are great. And it’s just a lot of fun in a quite inexpensive package. So if I had to chose, I’d have to go for the MicroFreak. It pairs very well with the Multistomps :-D.

    Thank you for the precise information! This is my new hobby! I have the micro freak, a volca Fm, a cs reface. I was looking for an effects pedal for shimmer/ delay. Is the mc-70 a good bet? I don’t want to spend more than £100 if possible.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcus Vespasian the MS-70 is great, and excellent value for the money, and I really love it for all its sound design potential. However, it is not perfect, it is a budget pedal after all, and if you’re primarily looking for a good reverb with shimmer, I would look elsewhere. The shimmer effect on the MS70 is not very good. The reverb I’m using on the MS70 in this jam is called Particle Reverb. I like it, but it doesn’t shimmer :-).

    • @strangeoscillator1327
      @strangeoscillator1327 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Marcus Vespasian i bought 1 week ago the TC Electronic "Hall of fame 2", great reverb for 117€. You have the shimmer, church, spring, plate, hall etc... And you can create your own reverb effects via an editor and store them into the pedal (there are 3 memory slots) ! Great value for the money

    • @streetshooters
      @streetshooters 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I too have a Hall of Fame 2 for my jazz guitar practice and it's very good as an effect on the synth as it has shimmer. The Rubberneck Analogue Delay also works well. I've also got a Multistomp MS-100BT and you should be able to find these Zooms pretty cheap on the second hand sites.

    Oh my, I love it. After listening to your music again and again I ordered a Microafreak and the same Zoom. One maybe obvious question as a beginner: when I connect the MicroFreak to my Zoom and the Zoom to my audiointerface (I have a Focusrite scarlett solo), do I then connect it to speakers? Or how.. how do I get the sound otherwise if it's not connected to my PC? Thank you and thanks for inspiration!!

    • @Waveformer

      You can connect the audio interface to your speakers/amplifier. Check if it supports direct monitoring so you can use it without your PC. You can also connect the Zoom directly to your speakers/amplifier. Just watch the volume so you don’t damage your ears.

      Hm. The Zoom is more flexible. Swiss Army knife. Many possibilities and more type of effects. It fits the Freak very well. If I were to start from scratch again, I’d still buy the Zoom first. • @Waveformer

      Hi Richard. The black box on the right is a Korg Kaoss Pad KP2S. In this jam, I use it just for recording the jam. As for the MS-70CDR, I find it hard not to recommend it, as it’s so much fun :-). The MicroFreak doesn’t have any built in effects, so it will sound much better with some effects. The MS-70CDR is cheap and has lots of different effects built in, but you can use whatever you like, for instance built in effects in your mixer, or effects in a DAW. The MicroFreak just had a cool update with support for uploading your own wavetables :-).
