    I have found that when going for an accounting/finance analyst interview, its a damn good idea to look into their latest Financial statements (if its a publicly listed company). It includes everything from CEO & Chairman notes noting the strategic direction the company is taking, types of risks faced by company and mitigative actions taken, as well as the different revenue streams (more details on products/services, even by geography) - not to mention financial performance of the year comparing to previous. Gives a very robust view of the company, plus you will be able to speak their language (meaning using terms specific for the company). Just my thoughts!

    These are interesting videos. I do a lot of hiring, sometimes directly from college or after only a few years of experience for entry-level types. One bit of advice I have for anyone reading this is remember they have something specific in mind. It may not be you. Don't take it personally.
    The best advice aside from what is offered in this video is to just be yourself, and hope that they like that person. Don't try to be what you think they want. First of all, you may not be correct, second of all you're not going to be comfortable and therefore you'll come off as fake. The interviewer has a good idea what they're looking for, be yourself and if that's what they're looking for they'll hire you. If you try to be someone else and they hire you thinking you're someone else, sooner or later that'll come out and it'll be an unpleasant experience for all of you. Also, what if what they were looking for you was the genuine you? You just blew an interview because you weren't who you really are.

      Thank you for your honesty. I have had an accounting degree and bombed 2 interviews and I haven't tried again. I'm about to attempt to try again. My question is, what is the best thing to be confident about and what are the expectations for a new accountant?

    • @danielrichwine2268
      @danielrichwine2268 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@amatmathis3042 you'll want to talk about your attention to detail and your ability to learn from your mistakes. Try to give specific examples of both during your interview. Beginning accountants are not expected to know much or to be able to do much, they just have the theoretical background. Attention to detail is going to allow them to carry out simple tasks without too many problems. The fact that you know so little means that making mistakes is a given, the important thing is when you are shown an error, you are able to learn from it and not make the same mistake again.
      Good luck.

The tiniest details that are mentioned actually give me a more wholesome view and understanding on accounting. Your visuals are so great at depicting what you're saying and adds emphasis. Very well done!

I do have a question as a previous accountant and auditor who hope to get great advice from you. I'm planning to do FP&A related job and want to know more about it. Is there any additional things I need to prepare for that job and what you think about accountant changing field to FP&A?

    If I was interviewing for an accounting position and the candidate was asking "what is the next exciting product that you have", what is your strategy for the next 5 years" etc I would suspect that they were sent by a competitor on a fishing expedition.

    Will you please consider making a video on the career path you would recommend for those students who want to gain practical education and work experience to ultimately prepare themselves for starting and growing their own firm? I would really appreciate this kind of video since most accounting videos focus on becoming the best employee wo discussing a strategy for developing an end goal of preparing oneself to become self employed. Thankyou!

    Hi Bill, thanks for your great contribution. I have 2 questions that I find them hard to answer in my case, so could you pls help me ?
    1) Question regarding candidates' weakness. If I'm an introvert person, should I mention that is my weakness? Do u think a manager would wanna hire an introvert accountant? If that's a bad thing that an accountant should not have, then how can I mention this as my weakness without losing the chance to get hired?
    2) Question about career path. If a manager ask me if I will pursue a CPA designation in the near future, and I don't actually wanna take that path anytime soon (not because I'm lazy, I just don't think my brain can handle that stuff), then what could be the smart way to response without making them think I have no ambition and thus leave a bad impression on them.

    • @TheFinancialController
      @TheFinancialController  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Don’t bring up the introvert issue. No one wants to hire a lone wolf :) regarding the CPA, how about you leave it open? Meaning “With the CPA, I am still assessing whether I want o pursue it” that’s better than saying “no”

    • @lanerosalyn6815
      @lanerosalyn6815 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I subscribed your channel and watched a lot of your videos. They are very useful for me as a job seeker now. Thank you so much! I worked as a corporate accountant for a small company for over 6 years and I obtained my CPA license during the years. Now I got a great opportunity to interview with a large organization for a accounting supervisor position. I am wondering if you can give me some tips for my upcoming interview. Since I never worked for a large organization or a CPA firm, I feel less confident in front of a large organization. I also haven't yet used SAP system, because Quickbooks was sufficient for my last work. Any advice will be appreciated!

    Hi Bill - I’m noticing a couple of my recent interviews to be extremely laid back and the interviewer didn’t ask many technical or behavioral questions. Do you have any insight as to whether this is a new interviewing trend; I.e simply having a conversation with the candidate?
    Thanks

      Yes. I have came across same interview last week. It was about the position of GL accountant. The interview was more about general conversation about GAAP and Ifrs. Also how I perform month end tasks, management accounts , journal entries, accruals and prepayments. It’s even more realistic approach now. I think this is new trend.

    • @llarraify
      @llarraify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Remember that the interviewer does this quite frequently and you do these interviews without practical knowledge..first time, or after 3 years, etc.. It's even harder if you don't have much "sales" attitude and you are tight-lipped or shy (like me). Obviously you will do mistakes, like everyone does during these interviews. BUT don't let your confidence go down, there are places where they appreciate honestly and knowledge, stay professional and you will definitely have a good job. Don't stress about English, usually practical knowledge comes back when you use it day by day and good employers know that. Good luck and heads up

    Interviewer: How much is 1 + 1?
    Candidate: 2!
    Interviewer: Don't call us, we'll call you.
    Interviewer to 2nd candidate: How much is 1+1?
    2nd Candidate: He gets up, close the door and the curtain blinds, sit back down and says: "What do you want it to be?"
    Interviewer: "Your hired!"
    Good luck to anyone wanting a career in accounting. I personally don't like bean counting as it's a real boring field. And beyond the BS of why you chose accounting as a career, the real deep motivation is making money.
