you're a life savor!! pulling that damn battery is the ONLY thing that worked. had the exact issue.... restarts, unplugging, and synching did nothing! THANK YOU!!
This issue is most likely caused due to shoddy design of the Operating System. The same thing can happen to a 3DS when taking out a game cart while the device is in sleep mode, blank screen with the user not being able to to anything.
I have a launch Wii U deluxe. Now, I can turn the console on by button on console, gamepad, pro controller, and the blue light comes on but gamepad can't connect and black screen on TV. Only way I can get it working is hold the power button 4 seconds and power it back on with either the console, or controller power button. I've tried turning the quickstart stuff off but that didn't do diddly squat. So I turned it back on. Still no fix for this and it seems so common. It's as if the Wii U is stuck in some sort of glitch mode that only resets when holding power button 4 seconds but once you put it back in standby or turn it off it starts the glitch back over. I know it's software issue but Nintendo seems not to be able to fix it.
+Dyego Allexander I've not tried removing the battery since I've read that it deletes your play history. Lately it's not been doing it near as often & seems the more often I play it the less it happens. Weird.

I've heard/read that it is actually in an "AutoPilot" mode when you power it back on. SUPPOSEDLY, it will EVENTUALLY finish and function correctly whenever it's complete with the corrupt/interrupted update. I JUST started a 24 hour wait to try this theory I found in the comments of a ProtoMario video after searching Wii U brick here on YT. ProtoMario's video has the explanation in it's top comments, FYI.
you should not have to remove the cmos battery to fix this issue. I have had the same issue occur from time to time and so has my brother with his. just unplug the system (remove all cables, not just the power), hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge the systems motherboard of all energy stored in the capacitors, and plug it all back in. the device powers on just fine, every time. there is no permanent fix for this. the motherboard just takes too much charge over a long span of time and needs to release
+Fredro39 replacing the disk drive won't help the system display. if the system display and disk drive went out at the same time you have a bad motherboard. might as well purchase a new Wii U as the cost to repair can cost more than the console. if you know how to replace a motherboard then by all means go for it. you might save money or you might go through 2-5 bad motherboards off ebay trying to purchase a good one
This has happened to me before all I did was unplugged the wii u and waited a few minutes. Then I connected it back in and turned the wii u back on the wii u gamepad not the console itself and I put the gamepad close to the wii u console and it started working again
