Spurs’ trajectory over the past ~15 years has to be absolutely soul destroying for their fans. Break the top four, unleash Bale’s potential, sign van der Vaart (I think really underrated now what a big deal that was at the time), develop Kane & Modric. Then appoint a really talented young manager, bring in players like Son and Eriksen, spend periods at the top of the league, make a CL final. And then what? Nothing to show for it apart from a big stadium and an Audi Cup.

    Spurs fan here.
First of all, really well-done summary. I think you pretty well summed up how I feel about this season, as well as the ownership.
Secondly, for how terrible our form has been lately, it’s remarkable that there have been no rumors about squad discontent. Players aren’t coming forward with subtle digs at the manager or complaints about the training regiments. Rather, most of the complaints from the players have been regarding the board. Romero came out and criticized them a few months ago, and Kulusevski criticized them just earlier this week.
Most remarkably of all, though, is the fact that Son has also criticized the board, and the fact that he, of all people, criticized the board says it all. Son is usually so professional both on and off the pitch, which makes it that much more important that he said something.

In the late 1990s, I worked with a Man City fan and also a Spurs fan. The Spurs fan was constantly optimistic, feeling that big things were 'just around the corner' whilst the Man City guy was the picture of misery, feeling that he was doomed to ever see his team ever win anything major in his lifetime. I wonder how they both feel now.

Terrific video, Alfie. Correctly identified the issue, which is Daniel Levy's itchy trigger finger. Poch took us to the UCL final, and six months later was gone after a few games of bad results. Ridiculous. A four-year project which had paid clear dividends in sporting terms, trashed in a heartbeat by an executive more focused on the bottom line than the sporting line. I didn't support Mourinho or Conte - I believe in long-term management projects, find them to be vastly more stable and effective (see Klopp, Guardiola, Arteta, et c., et c..), and both of them are short-term managers. They're also, as you noted, defensively-oriented, and that never suited who Tottenham are, who we'd bought, or anything. We take "To Dare is To Do" seriously. We want to see exciting, adventurous football, played at high pace and with glittering skill. For me, that kind of football, along with regular high finishes, is a pretty good way to live. And doing so would almost certainly lead to trophies. But it requires having an ability to lift your eyes above the bottom line, and see into the future a bit. Levy only looks into the future to see Number Go Up.

idiotic take. tottenham also had 12 players out this year at one point so don’t act like newcastle faced a worse crisis.
the difference is tottenham have stingy owners who refuse to add depth while newcastle have the financial backing of an entire country and have significantly more depth. you can’t just not take into account the differences in their squads and say that they have to “man up” when their squads are in significantly different spots.
tottenham has so little depth they had to add six 17 y/o players to the bench against leicester and even then they didn’t have enough players to fully fill out their bench. their situations are just not comparable

@chadtheafricanbullfrog418 Lol we have signed zero first team players in 18 months, so you're not only the stingy ones. We managed to actually finish 7th with 12 injured players and a banned first team midfielder. We play quite intense too, however our manager actually changes tactics when our players are injured unlike yours. So Spurs need to get a grip and stop blaming the injuries.

The root cause of the matter with Tottenham is the amount of money regarding player transfers, not to mention Ange Postecoglu’s approach to our once-beautiful game. He’s still manager of a club that has only won in TEN matches. And it’s no surprise just how much wages players are constantly getting from big PL clubs, season by season. My personal opinion is that football clubs are overspending a lot, as far as finances are concerned.

I think part of the problem is that Levy is clearly a shrewd businessman, but doesn't understand anything about football. Sacking Poch after only 5 defeats is criminal, sacking Mourinho before a cup final to avoid paying him a win bonus, not bringing in even any emergency loans in the middle of the worst injury crisis the club's experienced in at least the last 5 years (during a transfer window), the list goes on. I'm not even a Spurs fan and yet I know about these, what must be going on that Spurs fans know about?

They always remarked "you look cleaner and brighter with this kit" than the others, whether it's blue, red or yellow. And they have absolutely no idea what is a Tottenham. Undoubtedly, the kit looks even nicer on a fairer skinned individual. Perhaps that's the appeal why they are such a famous club despite so little trophies to show off to from this century alone.

Spurs isn't a club - it's a business with a sizeable number of fans more interested in what Arsenal are doing, no wonder Ange ranted after the City game last season about his own fan base. The terms profit and sustainability seem to be oxymorons and a cop out trying to make both the clubs and the League happy at the same time which is now proving to be even more ridiculous than when it was started and it's their own faults. I love your comment that Tottenham is a stadium with a club attached to it is so true. I support Crystal Palace so I know all about what the power of stadium ownership is all about. It's a symptom of a bigger problem of the unsustainability of the increasing value of real estate. Instead of Tottenham using their stadium to generate revenue for the club, the club is just one of many entities trying to generate revenue for the stadium. As you stated they don't even spend the revenue the club generates on the club. Ange is a great manager and has proven time and time again that he can do great things with very little but I think with all the injuries and lack of funds compared to other clubs this might be a bridge too far.

I don't think it is talked about enough how Kane carried Spurs for years.
Spurs are the kind of team I'd give a 4-0 lead to in a Champions League Final with 10 minutes to go and still not trust them to win the game.
They've had Poch, Mourinho, Nuno, Conte...They've had the best managers they are a going to get. I don't know where they turn now. It seems to be the same story with every manager they have. It starts off well and "they're going to win the League" and then within 18 months it has fallen apart again.
