Thanks man, what a great tip on that overdrive! Never used it in about a year, that I am using Logic now, even though it was right in front of me! Excited to try it out on some of my tracks!
Without a doubt the best music production channel on TH-cam. I’m looking into getting the whole MCP course. Curious if you have released the guitar presets anywhere yet? Thanks!!
I found this a few years ago, after being a Pro Tools user that was trained to use the Saturation plugin, I started using these plugins, I love them, specially the distortion one. I just wish it didn't low pass by default.
Hey Forest, great to see a new video from you! I hope you'll upload more frequently, as your videos are always very helpful and inspiring. Oh, and I really like the rock sound of this track. Keep up the awesome content, cheers!
I only discovered your channel today. I really like the content, it's very useful for people like me who make their own music. You have one more subscriber. congratulations and thank you
Do you have a song in your mind before you start or just let me grow? I just watch the video on your song from start to finish. I wish you would have more time for a deeper detain into that process. I have started about 100 times and stalled out, but I don't play any instruments. I just sing. Thanks!
Great tip, for sure - I have a ton of saturators and I still reach for these two in a pinch - great sounding material too! However... You should really level-match the effected signal with the bypassed signal when you are A/Bing 🙂 I think a good 75% of the "improvement" that my brain was perceiving in these examples was really just due to the signal getting louder.. Great stuff though otherwise!
I don’t watch meters at all when producing. If it sounds good it is good! Don’t overcomplicate it. If it makes you feel better to level match do it. I’ve never run into a problem because I always gain down my busses w trim tool when mixing.
@@forestwhitehead I think you missed my point 🙂 I agree that “if it sounds good, it is good”… But “louder is better” is one of the most common psychological tricks there is when you’re making decisions with sound; that’s why that button is there, as the other fellow pointed out, so you can hear what the saturation is doing, without the added gain boost skewing your perception. Your audience isn’t getting a sense of what is actually happening to the dynamics and harmonic content if you’re comparing signals that are so uneven in volume. A mentor of mine once joked, “if you wanna trick them into agreeing with you, make sure your version is louder” and I thought of that immediately as you popped back and forth between them 🙂
@@CHayden07 but if I were to show it this way you suggest with even level it’s not true to my workflow and how I layer plugins. I am showing you what has worked for me and how I use the plugin. It’s ok for someone to use it a different way but this is the way that has worked for me. It may not be the way you would prefer me to use the plugin but this is the way it looks on sessions that are on your radio! There’s always one person that will let me know I’m making mistakes when in reality… If it sounds good, it is good. Even if it’s in the red. I don’t let meters or volume matching drive my creativity when producing. Gain tool at the top of any bus fixes anything out of wack.
Thanks but….Would have been best to compare with gain compensation… Everything sounds “better” or cuts through the mix “better” when it’s louder…. I hear more of a “volume” boost than a “quality” boost Just being honest and if you disagree.. then let’s hear it at “equal” volumes
I simply do not work the way you prefer. Gain staging is important but when I’m trying to get something hotter and more punchy in a mix, this is how I do it. You might have to find another channel if you want someone focused on level matching.
@@forestwhitehead I was just making a point. Not asking you to change the way you do things. Basically was saying to really hear the difference the plug makes , the output should be at equal volumes. But to each their own. Thanks for the videos. And for helping others.
@@forestwhitehead my wife and I watch all of your videos. She was in a pop country band in the early 2000’s and her album was produced by Byron Gallimore (3 of Hearts)

It sounds louder not better. When you turn up the drive it gets louder and much much harsher. It sounds better without the overdrive, just turn the volume up a bit.
I agree I should have gain staged for the sake of video, however this plugin is adding saturation and overall fattening the source audio while making it louder. It is making changes to the overall waveform. This simply cannot be done by just raising a fader.
Thank god! He’s back!!
I've had that problem with a "too-standard" bass or guitar or licks sounds. Now I can understand why most drums sound different in hit songs.
Thanks man, what a great tip on that overdrive! Never used it in about a year, that I am using Logic now, even though it was right in front of me! Excited to try it out on some of my tracks!
It’s a sleeper plugin that will surprise you.

I use Logics Overdrive on pretty much every project as well. It really works on everything when used subtly. Really makes a huge difference.
Like always, your videos are SO useful and straight to the point! Pure gold. Love it!
Appreciate your creative input as always

@@forestwhitehead That would be great! Thanks again!
Been waiting for more content 👍🏼 it’s amazing how subtle this is compared to the difference it makes.
Learn something useful from every video you do, Thanks once again Forest
I never use that one and it sounds so great on everything! Great video I'll need to include it more in my productions🤘🏼
I like the real basic plug ins ... sometimes eliminating choice is a good thing.

great to see you back Forest. Hope to see more of these. Love this thank you.
Thanks for stopping by!
Hey man! love the vids! A video about your hardware would be awesome. Very interested to see what you are using outside of the DAW
I don't use logic pro, but your videos have inspired me to try and produce a song! Hopefully, I will start!

Literally one of my favorite plugins. It’s definitely a best kept secret sauce.
