Following the trial on 23 August 1305, Wallace was taken from the hall to the Tower of London, then stripped naked and dragged through the city at the heels of a horse to the Elms at Smithfield. He was hanged, drawn and quartered-strangled by hanging, but released while he was still alive, emasculated, eviscerated (with his bowels burned before him), beheaded, then cut into four parts. Wallace's head was dipped in tar and placed on a spike atop London Bridge. His preserved head was later joined by the heads of his brother John and his compatriots Simon Fraser and John of Strathbogie. Wallace's limbs were displayed, separately, in Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling and Perth.
That is the wildest shit I have ever heard. Imagine that now… that kind of punishment and then having your body parts paraded around like trophies by the govt. wild, man.
@@dklabratful It's true that William Wallace and others like Andrew Murray led a revolt against the English in Scotland and won against the English army at the battle of Stirling bridge on 11 September 1297. William Wallace was executed in London 23 August 1305. King Robert l and a Scottish army won against King Edward ll and an English army at the battle of Bannockburn on 23-24 June 1314. Robert the Bruce was King of Scotland between 1306-1329 when he died at the age of 54. Robert the Bruce was succeeded as king of Scotland by his son King David ll.
For those wondering, the torture first was being hung with a technique similar to the known torture device called The Rack. The ropes were attached to a mechanical crank, which, when turned, stretched the body and pulled the joints beyond breaking point. In this case, it was combined with hanging for the movie. What happens out of frame later, when they rip off his garments on the table and you see him in anguish as something is happening to him below his chest is disembowelment. The same sickle that is used to rip his garments is probably the same one to cut open his belly and then start ripping out and pulling out his entrails which are mostly intestines. If it happens quick enough, the victim will be alive long enough to go through all the horrible pain and realization of what is happening until they black out from shock or die. Sorry to be so blunt, but this type of Medieval torture was much worse than we see here. In fact, the real Wallace was castrated while he was still alive and his private parts burnt in front of him, then beheaded. HIs entrails were ripped out, but probably after he was dead, and then he was quartered (cut into pieces by the joints on his trunk). And each leg, arm and trunk sent to different parts of Scotland as a warning. While his head was dipped in tar and displayed on a stake in front of the King's castle entrance. He is not recorded as screaming "Freedom" while being tortured, but is certainly works in the movie for dramatic effect. Don't get me wrong, I cry every time I see this scene in the movie. One of my favorites from this type of movie from the 80's- 90's along with Highlander and Dances with Wolves. Later other great tragic epics like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven.
According to court records of that time, William Wallace actually did say those words, about longshanks not being his king, and therefore didn't agree with the charge of treason. William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded. The movie audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution. First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London. First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground. Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets. After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him. Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire. The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded. Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).
Mel Gibson was on the top of the world winning 5 Academy Awards for this one , one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood, and then he made The Passion Of the Christ, and just like that he became the devil himself, shows you who really is running Hollywood.
I think a few of the reactors thought that Wallace breaking and asking for mercy would mean he would get to live…. as the scene was taking place the torturers were slicing him open and taking his intestines out to throw on a fire in front of his own eyes , so he was never going to survive , asking for Mercy was in reality asking for a quick death by beheading to avoid more prolonged torture . 👍🏴
Add 'dragged naked behind a horse' to Smithfield, where the execution took place, and also castrated, with his genitalia thrown into a fire before him. His entrails were also burned after removal. Finally, his heart was cut out. 😢😠😢
_After the beheading, William Wallace's body was torn to pieces. His head was placed on top on London Bridge; his arms and legs sent to the four corners of Britain as a warning._ _It did not have the effect that Longshanks had planned._

This form of punishment was intended to serve as a severe deterrent and demonstrate the power of the monarchy.

The history of the English Scottish wars was so dark. Even now the old debatable lands of the borders are the least populated within the country. There were six border ridings, three south of the border (which moved regularly) and three to the north. They became an extraordinary lawless region of both countries, with a very dark history. The greatest massacre to take place on British soil took place, when after the fall of the town, Longshanks released his army on the population of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed for three days. He did this because they had refused to yield to town to him. Border legends and ballads actually recant, however accurately, that you could almost cross the river by walking on the dead crammed in it from the slaughter. Longshaks is still remembered here!
