I read Howl's Moving Castle last month and fell in love with it!! The whimsy, the descriptions of the world, the characters. It was so cozy & comforting to read.
So thanks for making this video! Exactly what I was looking for. :')

A personal reccomendation: If you love Howl's Moving Castle, you'll love the Discworld novels by Terry pratchett. You can start with any books you want, they're nog much related, but I suggest you first read Wyrd Sisters, which is about three witches who have to deal with getting rid of the new king of their country because everyone hates him and they're all relying on them. I think it's a book that's most likely to make you get into the Discworld novels because it's hilarious, there's magic in it, it has so many good quotes, it's genius too, and I think it's the most similar book wihh Howl's Moving Castle

You really don't need to credit anyone for this. People on TH-cam and in general always copy topics from one another and every one does it their unique way. No one credit for it

i love you for this! i recently finished Howl's Moving Castle, needless to say I'm not over it and I still don't feel like reading any other books if they don't remind me of it. So thank you so much

I loved your analysis and suggestions! Have you ever read anything by Garth Nix? I love his Abhorsen series - although its darker themed than Howl's Moving Castle - it is still one of my favorites.

I loved Yona of the Dawn. I'm not finished with it. A similar shojo series you may also like is Fruits Basket which is completed. I will definitely check out some of these recommendations since i love this type of slow fantasy with characters coming into their own.

Yeah, Yona isn't complete yet but I'm excited for the finale. And I love Fruits Basket! Thanks for the comment :)

howl's moving castle must be one of my favourite books of all time! also the plot is so layered! as i first read it when i was really young, a lot of things flew over my head (the romance between howl and sophie was also kinda subtle in a way, 10yo me almost missed it lol) and when i reread it i was kinda mindblown .do you per chance have any books to recommend that are similar in style/themes but feature LGBT characters (bonus points for wlw romance!)?

    • @classicswithcourtneycwc
      @classicswithcourtneycwc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s such a great book to reread!
I need to read more lgbt+ fantasy because I’m racking my brain for more character driven/whimsically written stuff and not coming up with a lot that I absolutely love. But Jane Unlimited does has a w|w relationship(I think I recommended that in this video I can’t remember now lol). One series I love is The Wayward children, especially Down Among the Sticks and Bones; the series has some great writing and atmosphere and lgbt+ characters including w|w. Melissa Bashardoust has two ya fantasy story retelling that are w|w. And if you’re purely looking for vibes I feel like This is How You Lose the Time War is great for a w|w relationship and House in the Cerulean Sea for a m|m.
But yes there needs to be more of that great character driven fantasy with whimsical writing and lgbt+ characters.

I made a comment and it was flagged for some reason! As soon as you mentioned Yona of the dawn I subscribed. Emily Wilde's encyclopedia of the faeries is supposed to have a similar romance but I haven't read it yet. I love character driven stories also

I don't see any comments held for review on my end so that's weird, but I'm glad to have found another Yona fan! And I have Emily on my TBR!!

Howl's Moving Castle is my all time favourite so thank you so much for this video :D I'll definitely read those. And I have a recommendation as well - Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos. It gives me very similiar whimsical feeling and it's very closly focused on the main character. I really, really love that book :)

@@sesel4080 Hi! I have two copies, one I bought at Barnes and Noble (this book is still in print and most B&N normally have a copy in the store), and then one in Waterstone when I was in England (again this book is normally carried in any chain store).

    Late to the party, but...
I like how you chose an aspect of HMC to focus on other than the whimsy, which is what I always go by when looking for something similar. I haven't read all your recommendations, but those I have read, I love! (Graceling, Fire, for example) I'll have to check out some of your others.
For a more similar whimsical tone, I'd recommend the Dealing with Dragons series, which was written a few years later. The early Harry Potters also have a lot of whimsy. But in my reading experience, nothing comes close to the whimsy of HMC except Discworld. I'm rereading the City Watch series (audiobooking actually), and I just can't help smiling half the time. I'm sure people who see me walking down the street while listening think I'm weird. :D
