I can give a shot Joseph at guessing why Warren Buffett may have sold. It looks like he sold right around/after China's 20th Party Congress. It was very clear in the media covering the event that Taiwan may see some conflict ramp up in the next five years (length of a Party Congress). He likely sold after this major event highlighting TSM as a risky stock in the near future in terms of not company fundamentals, but geopolitics.

@@darrenhere5856 because TSMC is building 2 fabs in the US, but those fabs are not comparable to the ones in Taiwan. not only are they smaller, but they also have a shortage of talent. That would alleviate some of the pain that Apple will have. but not for TSMC whose majority of the wafers are manufactured in Taiwan. if anything happens, Apple will be able to survive and if things get long enough, they have some time to switch to Intel or Samsung.

That is interesting. TSM just seems so risky to me given the geopolitical situation. They may produce most of the semiconductors on the planet right now but my guess is that’s going to change. I would suspect other companies are going to want to invest in their own foundry’s over the long term which would take everything that makes TSM special away. In fact it just feels like that’s only a matter of time and a given going forward. I feel like the actual moat in the semiconductor industry lies with ASML

If taken out geopolitics, TSMC would be an ideal investment. But with geopolitics, competition is arising. Not only that, the technical prowess will not be long lasting. With new methodology, any technical strength can be overtaken overnight. This happened to Intel at 2018/2019 when they stuck at 10nm (equivalent to TSMC 7nm btw), while tsmc was using euv at N7 intel was using SAQP WITH duv, that difference is shown at Intel income statement today. Had they used EUV on time, Intel would not be in the same situation as it is today. The same thing can happen on TSMC. 2NM(Intel 20A) is a line to be drawn. so many things can happen. Intel can overtake both samsung and tsmc to become the most performant foundry, or samsung can leapfrog with their GAA done at 3nm, tsm may also have chance to continue the market dominance. and if you fall behind in this industry, your competitor is going to take all the most cutting edge customers. Winner take all. I think that'll explains
