    Storyline:
While in San Francisco on business, Ben meets Rita, a friend from the past. He's surprised to find that she is now an alcoholic saloon girl. He convinces her to come stay at the Ponderosa for a month, no strings attached. While there, she meets Mace, an ex-prizefighter who falls in love with her. Reviews:
"While watching this episode I thought someone was in the next room playing classical music over a piano. But to my astonishment, it was elegant music that was part of the background music for this episode. Not only was it unneeded but was extremely loud.
Two scene take the cake for the most annoying music during a scene in any western--- no, make that any show. The first was when Rita Marlowe (Ruta Lee) and Ben were talking in the den area of the Ponderosa. While they were talking- I could swear someone was in the room playing a piano for fun. The second was when Mase (The prizefighter) and Rita was outside discovering their love. It was like watching a drama that was also cut with a cartoon sound track.
The story involves the alcoholic Rita Marlowe that uses the love of a shy innocent retired fighter named Maze Sindell. Rita uses Maze so that she can escape the small town way-of-life and begin again in the big city. But it seems that Maze's love runs deeper that Rita ever thought.
They story was not really that bad but the back ground music made the whole show annoying. Ruta Lee was actually very good in her part. And the show ended with an upbeat feeling. But it could not escape the noise of the music." Written by kfo9494 on IMDb.com
"Ruta Lee and Don Megowan guest star in this Bonanza episode. Ruta is a widow who Ben Cartwright knew back in the day. But Lorne Greene knew her as a wife with two children. She was the only one who escaped from a hotel fire that killed her family. Now she sings in saloons and drinks up half the bar at the same time.
Megowan is a former heavyweight boxing contender who has hung up the bare knuckles and now works as a saloon swamper. He and Ruta are hitting it off and he gets an offer to stay five rounds from his former manager Harry Hickox to stay with his new boy Roger Torrey.
It's right about now we find out just how twisted and hard hearted Ruta has become.
The guest casts definitely takes over this Bonanza story. You'll not forget Ruta Lee in this one." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Superb script, acting and direction. Rita Lee was a perfect anti-heroine. Don Megowan also played his role well, as well as the supporting cast. Loren Greene as Ben again personifies kindness, wisdom and empathy. This is what made Bonanza so great and at the top of its genre and drama in general. Many thanks for airing such a fine episode.

bonanza was never a great show because they made it exactly for people like you....simple stories silly stories to emphasize the cast....and not real life....Ben Cartwright...so kind full of wisdom full of empathy....but...they never wrote a single show where the people he helped ....helped him when he needed them..not a single episode..if you understand that typical tact...you would never call bonanza a great show

@@jadezee6316 They made it for the times. This show aired from 1959 to 1973. Back then everything was simplified on television. So many things couldn't be touched on the small screen largely because of censorship & the innocence of the time. Also, television was looked to simply as entertainment, a temporary escape from everyday problems & something a family could sit down & enjoy together. What you said here about Bonanza could be said about EVERY tv show of that time & every show had it's own formula it followed week after week. That aside, you even saying this would say to me you probably didn't see a lot of the later Bonanzas. As television grew up, so did Bonanza. It was on for 14 years because of the quality of the program. Later episodes were not always so simple & touched on more serious issues & more in depth characters. Watch the last 5 or 6 complete seasons or so & then see if you feel the same. There are reasons it lasted 14 years & may have gone another year or 2 or 3 if Dan Blocker had not died.

Wow. That was quite an ending. I liked the ending because Rita came to her senses and she did the right thing. She realized that Mace really did love her deeply. I was really touched when Rita threw away the $200 after she realized that she made a terrible mistake after she saw Mace's face because he refused to fight. He was only in the ring because he loved her and she finally realized that. I cried at the ending.

I am seeing more & more things re Bonanza and a big thing is how they, tho' wealthy, highly educated, they never got caught in the "class trap-or war." They cared about people that others would walk over, always sharing, helping when they could. Had I been rich, as Ben, I would have loved having so much that I could change other's lives for the better.

A very intense feature again, I won't repeat what I was feeling for this blonde beauty? However, the all sensing father and friend Ben Cartwright interviews and again express wisdom where selfish self pity on one hand and selfless willingness to gratify on the other, and is balanced into love, the greatest healer, and giver of all. Thank you Bonanza family for another fine example of how life should feel,, and look like.

The music tells us exactly what is going on with the central figure in this drama, her desperate condition. The dialogue and acting alone would not have achieved this. The piano was a stroke of genius. In a way, this was hearkening back to the use of music in the silent movies, before voice was added to film.

In the Last Haircut for example, Ben prevented Joe from murdering by reminding him how God deals with vengeance. And of course, no one in these shows blasphemes God or has sex outside of marriage or swears, or other disgusting things we see today. I'll never say that this show completely pure morally, it's not, but compared to the unholy smut we see today, it comes close.

One of the things I notice more about this program that I did not see as a boy is just exactly how much fighting and personal violence is used to prove the definition of MANHOOD. If that really is true, then in some ways, the future understandings of what constitutes masculinity has become better than it was in the late 50s and early 60s. Thank God for that, at least.

A Woman Lost is a realistic picture of alcoholism. Unfortunately, it is considered a social disease, but is treatable. Enjoying a drink once in a while to relax is fine. I personally like Brandy. But a few shots to relax and get some great sleep. Brandy allows the lungs to clear of gunk and has a pleasant after flavor. When I had mononucleosis, in college, I almost died, but my mother's boyfriend, an awesome person, forced me to drink 3 shots of brandy to get me to sleep. Well, lo and behold, I slept great, my lungs cleared up and I felt great. Louis saved my tail, or I could have died from how bad I had mononucleosis.

Wow! A $1000.00 just to stay in the ring for a few rounds and than another $200 to the girl. Must be a rich manager to give that much money away. I paused the fight scene a few times and counted about 30 men at the fight. Been that your average pay back in then days is $1:00 day, I assume admission fee wouldn't be much more then that. That is a whopping 30 bucks made at the box office. Ok lets say I miss counted and there was 50 men in attendance and they all paid $5:00 to get in. Well that covers the girls $200 dollars, plus 50 profit.

Very good but didn't make sense that Ben didn't tell him about the $200 before the fight but he didn't mention the $200 so that they could have the final scene of her dropping the money. Even if he didn't mention the $200 specifically, Ben should have said something before the fight, it felt like such a glaring omission when he didn't. They could have still had increasing pleas by Ben. It also didn't make much sense to me why he didn't go longer evading the hits while he was fresh. A boxer needs to take risks to get into position to land a big punch but if focused only on blocking and avoiding, he should last longer IMHO. The crowd reaction wasn't appropriate. They should have been shouting for him to fight back. Most of those in the crowd would know why he doesn't fight any more. It was ok but wasn't compelling. Ben already told him that she got travelling money for talking him into the fight, so it doesn't make any real sense to throw it away. Could have seen her handing it to him, saying "Here, you earned this. I don't even need it anymore." (because I'm staying right here).
