I built a new workstation so my settings in Audacity were incorrect. I looked everywhere for this video to relearn what you said and found dozens of so-called "experts" who were wrong about using the compression feature. AGAIN, THANK YOU!
Many videos on Audacity, and level issues and fixes. Hands down, this one is the best. Knowing what you shared in this video, has just saved me hours of editing for my podcast. THANK YOU!
I wasted so much time lowering every. single. individual. line of audio that peaked too high. lol Thank you so much. Now I can complete 1 track in under a minute.
Oh wow, I wish I'd been able to watch this video long ago! This is so helpful. I was spending so much time amplifying individual bits of tracks after compressing them. You just save me hours and hours!
Incredibly helpful, thank you. For those using the current version of Audacity, I recommend following these steps, but also cranking Lookahead to a high number (I set mine up to 1000), setting Knee near zero, and then playing with the Make-Up Gain as needed to bring your low audio up to a decent level
After years of using audacity, I finally understand how the compressor works, and for the first time my audio actually sounds consistent. Thanks a TON, my dude
Wow, this was SO helpful! IDK why it was so difficult to find this info in the Audacity Manual. This saved me weeks of work. After tunneling down into the Audacity documents, I discovered the Envelope tool and thought I was going to have to laboriously go through a 2+ hour vid using that tool to level out 4 disparate voice levels. So I went looking for videos to help me learn more quickly. Glad I didn't limit my search to "Audacity envelope tool" but instead searched for "Audacity increase volume of quiet segments" & clicked on "Videos". This vid was the 6th search result and I knew by the title it was what I needed. Your vid is concise, too! I watched it through once, then again, pausing to take each step in Audacity. I'm SO happy with the result! THANK YOU. I'm going to check out your other vids now.
This has to be the best answer to my question. I was trying so hard to figure out how to fix my friend's quiet audio and this saved me the trouble of going through and amplifying his specific segments. Thanks a ton!
Thank you, I have received your life raft and am climbing aboard. Saved my project and not to mentioned just allowed me to get a good nights sleep now that the challenge has been solved.
Very good tutorial. I used the information you provided on Adobe Premiere Pro. I really liked the fact that you explained what each change will do, which is something that many other tutorials are missing. Thank you!
Wow - I have been looking for this solution for a long time. I have music I want to play as I sleep but parts are too loud and others too soft and some songs too loud and some too quite. Now all my songs are very similar in nature and the volume isn't jumping all over the place. THANK YOU!
I found an amazing mp3 of classical music i was falling asleep to last night but i shot awake halfway though as the volume got so much louder, think I am sorted now. Thank you!
Absolutely amazing tutorial I have been searching all da to fix my tracks and finally landed on your video! Thank you so much for such a concise and helpful video! My problem is solved and most importantly, I don't have to record anything again! Thank you so much.
Very useful, many thanks! I've got a recording of two people speaking loudly and quietly in a noisy environment. Should I use Compressor first, o should I start with the reduction of the noise?
Interesting. Thanks for this tutorial. Albeit it did look like you needed a tiny bit more compressor on the track. But do you know if amplify distorts the quality of your peaks after a compressor?
Great tutorial! Question: Because making the low-volume speakers louder generally results in noise... Is Noise Reduction first step? Or do you do it after compressor/amplify?
This is great, but it is very cumbersome. Audacity should go the way of CoolEdit (Adobe Audition). That tool allowed you to preset compressor levels one time, and then highlight with your mouse what you wanted to equalise and click done. It was instantly all standardised and also the volume was raised so no further need to raise volume levels. If you work with music, this won't be any good. But if you do interviews you will value the ease of this set up. Here's hoping!
hi, I've got a recording problem. When recording , moving the volume slider up or down has absolutely no affect on raising or lowering the values on the UV meters. It's been a couple years since i last used Audacity. Back then this was not an issue but now it is. Thinking that maybe Audacity had become corrupted I uninstalled it and then downloaded and reinstalled the program. No change. Do you have any clues? Thanks very much!
You are probably already aware, but it might be worth mentioning that there are two volume sliders: one for input, and out for output. We've seen users accidentally use the wrong one. My only recommendation is to make sure you're adjusting the input slider, and also check your system and microphone settings. Good luck!
We recommend dealing with the inconsistent audio first, including the final step of applying the Amplify effect, because it would be easier to capture the Noise Profile when the volume is increased. I hope that makes sense!
If you haven't selected the entire file Audacity prompts you to select it all suggesting to use Ctrl +A in the suggestion box that pops up. Likely that is why that method was suggested in this video. Either way works, I guess it just depends on if you are used to using keyboard shortcuts as I am, or if you like to click on buttons.
I am using Windows 10 Pro. I realized after leaving my comment that in the video he shows "dragging" to select the entire file. It was my assumption when he stated that you need to select the entire file, select all, that Ctrl + A would be used. In Windows there are usually at least three different ways to accomplish any particular task. I now realize that is true in Audacity as well. Ctrl + A ... or click on "Select" ... or drag and highlight the entire file - and maybe others I am unaware of.

I've watched a lot of videos on this subject! NONE OF THEM EXPLAINED THIS TO WHERE I COULD UNDERSTAND! You helped me so much! Thanks!
Many videos on Audacity, and level issues and fixes. Hands down, this one is the best. Knowing what you shared in this video, has just saved me hours of editing for my podcast. THANK YOU!
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO EXPLAINS IN VERY SIMPLE TERMS HOW COMPRESSION WORKS THANK YOUUUUUUUU 😍

This is definitely the best tutorial on this topic on this website! Thank you, you've got a new subscriber
Great video. I have spent so long trying to find an explanation that is simple and works. Well don and thank you!

I am new to audacity, this was exactly what I needed in just a few minutes. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I've seen so many other videos that speak on 'Normalizing sound' whereas this is what I've needed all along
Very good tutorial. I used the information you provided on Adobe Premiere Pro. I really liked the fact that you explained what each change will do, which is something that many other tutorials are missing.
Thank you!
Very good tutorial! Short and sweet and to the point. Exactly what I'm looking to do.

Thanks for the quick and easy explanation
Thank you so much! That was the easiest explanation and worked so well!
Thank you very much for this tutorial. Hope you'll make more like this one.

Thank you soooooo much!! thank you thank you for making this video!!!
How do you estimate volume decibel levels? Is there a way to let the program analyse it?
Sir Take A bow !!!
Thx for a clear and good tutorial 👍
Excellent - thank you so much.
You are a hero.

excellent. thanks very much.
You have saved my life. :)
Awesome
Thank you
great video
Thank You very much
great video thank you
thx sir you saved my time
should I do noise reduction first or alter the volume consistency first?
We recommend dealing with the inconsistent audio first, including the final step of applying the Amplify effect, because it would be easier to capture the Noise Profile when the volume is increased. I hope that makes sense!
Thank you!
If I set the amp to negative number, why does the wave form increase greatly?
Are you perhaps setting the "New peak amplitude" value instead of the "Aplification" value?
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!
Bless you.
Good, though users should also be informed that they can highlight / select the whole track by clicking on 'Select' at lower left.

@@Tsedek_ben_Shimon Thanks for the reply. I'm on a Mac, and the keyboard control would be Command + A (or whatever).
How’s it going?
