You Want to Raise Goats? Must Have Items Every Goat Owner Should Have On Hand

  • We put a video together that shows most of our medical and goat care items that we use on our farm. These are important items to have on hand to deal with many situations on a goat farm.
Hidden Heights Farm- First Aid Medical Kit every goat keeper should have on hand
Not all items listed below are shown in picture.
    MEDICAL/EMERGENCY ITEMS
amzn.to/2WSzbDn Thermometer - it’s crucial to know when a goat is running a fever, especially a baby.
amzn.to/31aTRFX Blood stop powder - We use this when trimming hooves & we accidentally trim them to the quick. Don’t judge, we’re not perfect, it happens. Also used for disbudding if you disbud your kids.
amzn.to/2IupCl4/ Blu Kote Fungicidal. Antiseptic, Protective Wound dressing. Kills ringworm & fungus infections. Perfect to spray on wounds to prevent flies. Also used after disbudding
Vitamin B complex-awesome pick-me-up, helps with appetite and rallying a sick animal.
Pepto - great to have around for the runs and upset tummies.
Baking soda - In the case of bloat or other acidosis of the rumen, you’ll need this to restore balance.
Goat Nutri-drench-good all-round boost for a goat not feeling 100%. I often give a dose of this after kidding.
Iron -injectable iron. If you have an anemic animal, this will help them fight it and get back on their feet.
amzn.to/2Xveniv Probios paste-rumens need friendly bacteria to keep them running properly. This helps.
Iodine-spray, liquid or wipes. Doesn’t matter which one, just have it on hand.
Peroxide - I prefer the spray bottle
    amzn.to/2XubRZV Wormers-ivermectin, Cydectin, Prohibit
Activated charcoal gel-in case one of them gets poisoned
    amzn.to/31gii55 Selenium/vitamin E gel
amzn.to/2KymTcP Goat Copper Bolus-Adult & kid doses. We give this to our goats every 6 months.
Arnica-for pain, swelling bruises and other injuries.
amzn.to/2HYtI5H Co-flex bandages (Self-Adherent Cohesive Wrap Bandages)-we use this for stints to straighten legs out. Broken legs always happen at a weekend when the vet is closed. This stuff can keep things stable until you can get them in the next day, thus avoiding an out-of-hours monster-charge.
    Gauze pads
amzn.to/2Xt0aCp Scalpel-disposable scalpel’s for abscess', minor procedures, etc.
Syringes-various syringes from a three cc to a thirty cc for shots and drenching.
Balling gun- for giving pills & copper bolus
Alcohol or Alcohol Wipes- use these to clean the tools that I may need to use in.
    Hand Sanitizer
    Rubber Gloves
    Towels
    Hoof trimmers
    Castrating tool & rubber bands
    Ear tag equipment?
KIDDING KIT in addition to the Medical Kit
Pritchard Nipples-These are awesome! They fit over the top of a 750ml soda bottle in case mama refuses/is unable to feed the kids and we need to intervene.
Soda bottles-clean & ready to go should we need to help feeding the babies.
Kid Colostrum-Powdered version for back-up. The best option is getting frozen colostrum from local goat contact but that is not always available.
Old Towels, rags, t-shirts or blankets-in case I need to take up residence in the kidding stall for a few hours.
Personal Lubricant or Vaseline-This is in case I need to “go in” and assist by turning a breech kid.

I am a Nurse/ EMT as my regular day job so I have put together a pretty extensive "Goat Go Bag" from an old tactical military bag I had when I worked on the ambulance and was a tactical medic for our local sheriffs department. I had IV set-ups but the fluids all were out of date and since I made the switch to all 100% Spanish, I have not had to use much of my Go Bag and have scaled it back a bit. Your kit is an excellent one.

Great & informative video! Y’all may not be vets, but sharing your experience & wealth of information is so helpful. Baby goats are so stinking cute & entice a lot of people to own them. However, so many people get them without really researching what it takes to raise them, keep them healthy & the costs involved. I hope this video is seen by current goat owners & potential goat owners. Keep up the great work & videos. Always a plus to see Rachel & Kyah. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas

Thank you. Never had goats on our farm, when I was younger. So much info. Believe me if able and land would raise goats especially how they are so cool and keep the land clean. Seems to many years people thought sheep and goats were bad. Myself never understood. Years ago got real sick and one neighbor gave me goats milk to help. Well still here. So had friends in the past that used goats in Seattle to take care of the brush on the hills. Believe me think you both ate wonderful and kind to share.

Really enjoyed the video this morning. I have just about the same equipment that you have in yours. A couple things I do keep in my birthing kit are some thin cotton string and betadine for the cord. I also keep oxytocin in the fridge in case I needed it for one of the doe's that does not drop l milk right away it does help bring on her milk and also lets her pass the placenta a little quicker. I raise the nubian and also boer goats so I usually have mine pinned up close to the house during kidding. Once the babies are about 8 days old and I have disbudded the ones that I want done I turned them all out as a group.
You're video is very helpful and should really help anyone who is new starting out

Great looking Spanish Goats!!! They are as deep black as I've ever seen. Calfee Farms, my Spanish Goat Operation, in East Tennessee, it is very copper deficient so I have to do 4g copper capsules for each goat 3 times a year and then a goat specific loose mineral free choice in each pasture year round. We have Koy Ranch Spanish Goats as well as 5 other Spanish bloodlines. We definitely love our Spanish goats and that is the only breed we have. Again, Great looking goats, love your channel, and you Okies (you and Daniel Arms) know how to raise some great looking goats!!! God bless!🙂

Rachel I just want to add how often the batteries on thermometer should be changed? Do you think you should get an extra one due to the many y’all have. I’m so glad you’re showing this as many people starting out don’t have a clue. Those that milk don’t wash the teats and goats teats and udders should be checked anyway as nursing moms can get problems and might need some medicines to keep them from getting or treat mastitis. Pepto bismol is good for goats that get bloat. That’s a good Kit that y’all have there. Keep baby wipes around too. Sorry I forgot to say hello to your pretty sweet daughter; Hello little Ms. Kyah.

I know it is a bad idea to castrate big dogs before they have fully grown as they will have arthritis issues later in life (like mine does).
