Dmitry having the same technique as his dad almost brings a tear to your eye. It reminds me of how Mike Yastrzemski has the same swing of the bat as his grandfather, the great Carl "Yaz" Yastrzemski. There's beauty in that knowledge and technique being passed through generations. How can you not be romantic about weightlifting?
I think the fact that they’re direct descendants probably means the father/grandfathers techniques are much more likely to work for the son / grandson because they will have similar frames, genes, dimensions, etc
Zack, I can tell you with absolute certainty what the yellow plates weighed - my first ever gym had weights bought from the USSR for next to nothing after its collapse, and these old bumpers were everywhere. The medium sized yellow plates are 10kg, not 15kg. 15kg plates were orange and they had the same diameter as the 20kg and 25kg ones (blue and red respectively).
I follow a guitarist on TH-cam, Michael Palmisano, and before every video the intro is him free styling a lick or riff on guitar, based on his mood/what the genre of the music he is covering in that video. It’s an interesting idea, your intros could be little clips of things you do related to weightlifting like your warm ups or your recovery, or unrelated, like a clip of your jiu jitsu sparring and training, and a step further just any hobby you have or a clip of your social life. It gives insight as to who you are and what you enjoy and makes you not seem like you only indulge in weightlifting in your life. It wouldn’t segue as naturally as his videos but with could editing it could be a good thing for your content and brand. If everything in life is as expected, it becomes boring.
2:15 Zack he's making your point for you: he said when all the rage was about refereeing the press, nobody cared about a pressout on the jerk and snatch. When the press went away, referees needed something to justify their existence, so suddenly pressout on the jerk and snatch became a topic, which is one of your pet peeves.
Yeah, that’s really interesting because ive heard people argue that “the pressout rule was relevant back when there was a clean and press event”. Which apparently is just crap.
Got to meet Mr. Klokov at the Games this year. He was just walking around with everyone else. I asked him politely if he minded taking a pic with me and he acted grateful that someone recognized him. He was very nice and still shredded.
I'm not even into weightlifting that much (apart from lifting weights at the gym), but this channel is so interesting. Well edited videos, perfect length. Nice work.
Precious Mackenzie is a New Zealander. Growing up (born 1978) He was still legendary and one of the most talked about Kiwi Athletes. Thanks never new He power lifted! I will have to look into that. I went to a rural prep school that had two rooms and 27 pupils from n the roll. Our headmaster was a big strong quiet man who everyone idolised. He used to cycle some 12km (5 mile) to school on an old single speed road bike. Anyway the story from our parents went that Precious had visited the school on a tour after they be of His Commonwealth gold medals and had lifted our headmaster, a Mr Hilliam clear above His head in a type of a jerk lift. Which amazed us as we had seen Precious on tv and knew Him to be only about 5ft tall.
Precious was originally from South Africa but struggled due to apartied and went to UK but eventually called NZ home & competed as a New Zealander so we call him our little national treasure ❤
@@appleeye101ify would’ve been interesting to see if he competed in today’s 109. He had to cut a lot of weight to make 105 according to him when he competed. He would walk around at like 110-112 and if you saw his training lifts 203 from a deficit plus a 240 clean and jerk. It would have been interesting to see if he could’ve done close to this if he didn’t have to cut so much weight.
@@prep0763 Also has a video of him missing 214 block snatch which is ridiculous, makes me wonder what did he make that day. 210-212 block snatch at like 110-112 bw or whatever he walked around in is ridiculous
Hey Zack, I know, females are relatively new to the weightlifting game, but could you consider doing more stuff on legendary ladies? We know loads of stuff about the guys already, but the development of female weightlifting is quite interesting to me and I'd like to know more. :-)
10kg change plates and smaller change plates back then were all uniform in color like this yellow. You can find very old Eleiko change plates that were painted that color. The 10kg bumper didn't come into existence until the mid-80s if I'm not mistaken.
Hey Rippetoe just ran his mouth about you without saying your name on the starting strength channel. In a video about Rip addressing confused strength coaches. I have instigated as usual. I attempted to provoke him into a debate with you. Right now you are the one with the standing rebuttal against him, and I made sure he knew that.
this was fully golden era ... Klokov Sr appeared in Sports Illustrated that last issue of '83 and Pisarenko in Time the next yr as the boycott loomed... same time frame as Naim was starting to break WRs and YV was duelling Zlatev
lol my grandpa was a better athlete than I am today, happens in all families. Just this case it's at a way, way, way, way higher level. But MJ's kids are pretty bad (compared to him) and we don't know if LeBron's son will really make it in the NBA but he has no signs of following up his dad's greatness. It's kinda cool but I bet Usain's daughter will be really fast but I doubt she will break any world records.
You should try get some old weightlifter on the channel and have some interview with him. Ask about how weightlifting looked back then. My coach is 70 he was competing in 70s and he has some interesting stories to say. I'd like to hear somebody else talk about it. That would be gold.
Unpopular opinion. Dmitry Klokov was overrated. Other than his 2005 WC he really underachieved. He lost to his fellow countryman Akkaev in the 2011 WC had to bow out of the 2012 Summer Olympics from a mysterious injury. It pains me to say all this because he's an absolute stud but it had to be said.
Absolutely true. Hard to find another guy who did more for popularization of the sport but even when he got perks for being from a weightlifting dynasty he only won worlds once
Haha especially when he did seminars when crossfit was really really big. I saw him at his Juggernaut seminar and he jerked and re-racked like 200+, I think he jerked like 240ish that day
As a pretty much outsider when it comes to oly lifting, is it true that the older (golden era) weightlifters were stronger back then than we are now? And if so is that just a drug issue or training issue?
Yes they were stronger, it's their drugs. Training has advanced considerably since then, but there's only so much you can do. The old world records were on a completely different level, it boggles the mind
Not necessarily. They were not tested on drugs so they could’ve gone totally buck wild. Not saying that todays testing is perfect and that everyone is natty, but they can’t use PED’s to the same effect as the older generation could. What did improve was knowledge and training however, and diet, and because of that new weightlifters were able to surpass records from the older weightlifters

@@aidanivesdavis That's going a bit too far :) But I am glad I could help!
Very cool
You are a real old school then you are from the era of my dad's young weightlifting time

The buzz of vodka looms heavily over this video
hi coach Paris!
I had no idea his father was a weightlifter, non the less a better weight lifter to boot. Very cool to learn that.
Well that's the top tier peasant worker genetics.

I'd love to see an opening where you cut Russian lifters doing the stomp into the Super Mario theme, 1-1
Alex has his work cut out for him.
Hello zack when are you gonna do another "you are not weightlifter name" ?? Very cool series
You are not clarence kennedy 👀👀👀
People would hate to hear that one, everyone want to be like clarence
@Ricardo Spatafore I take offense to this lol my giraffe status totally doesn’t affect my weightlifting looks at my numbers alright maybe a little
“You are not the Irish Fridge”
“You are not a weightlifter” and show some shitty CrossFit lifts
"you are not BLOAT LORD"
If you make another response to Mark Rippetoe the intro should be a plug for your new book finishing strength
I'm not even into weightlifting that much (apart from lifting weights at the gym), but this channel is so interesting. Well edited videos, perfect length. Nice work.
Hula skirt with a ukulele, song of your choice. Let's go boys. Also, great video as always.
Try to do Clarence's backflip off of the plates of a 200kg loaded barbell after you just C&J'ed it.

@THΞ ΛΧΥΞΗΗΘ oh how nice
He was a triple threat - BB, WL and PL, the latter as World Champion I believe.
Precious was a world champion powerlifter at keast once at his weight, in fact better at that than Olympic weightlifting .
Precious was on british TV in late 70s .
Next intro opening has to be Zack's impression of the weird sounds the Korn frontman makes in Freak on a Leash
It's his looks and his physique and personality that make him so popular he's still a great lifter but probably didn't realize his full potential
why do you not think he realized his full potential?

At first glance I thought you invented the term "Daddy strong" in the thumbnail

Probably for international bigger meets; but in 1982 world cup in Sweden Blagoev world record snatch of 195kg does feature the 10kg bumpers
"Daddy, sorry, Daddy" cuts to Noel Deyzel lol
One time they hooked Dmitry up to a lie detector test... the lie detector confessed everything.
But what did Klokov’s daddy pause front squat whilst listening to Prodigy?
Also, this is a great video here. Alot of nice looking OHPs

Klokovs dad was a beast
That turnstile outro made this an S-tier vid
Not to take anything away from his performance, but the fact that he’s a rather handsome man most likely also played a role in his popularity
It always does
