That was an unbelievable lift, it was beautiful to see how he set the crowd on fire with that one, perfect ending to such a great video. I think they should listen to the giraffe here and start using those type of angles for weightlifting features, the classic front angle gives such cold vibes and the feeling that the lifter is out there moving weights for no good reason lol
I watched that. I like watching weightlifting but I don't understand the subtle nuances. Why did they keep saying yhang zhe was is so bad? They kept laughing at his technique saying how horrible it is
Matthias Steiner had the most emotional lift ever in my opinion. His wife died during his prep for olympia 2008. He was on the verge of losing - after the snatch he was only 4th. Warming up he just failed 230 something kg and then butchered his first attempt at the clean and jerk at 246kg. He then hit his second attempt at 248kg and already had a podium spot. Now it was in his own hands. He could win, if he hit 258kg (10kg jump) and he hit it. It is incredible to watch. It doesnt get more emotional than that imo. On the podium he held up a picture of his wife. He also won "german sportsman of the year" in 2008, no other german weightlifter was ever able to win it before and after, putting him up there with Michael Schumacher and Boris Becker.
I agree with this ,Steiner only 4th on Snatch phase .When Training ,he missed 235 and the coach made decision to start at 246 and he miss it again .He make the second lift at 248 and secured Podium Silver at Moment .He barely take 10kg Increased after Scerbathis failed to catch Steiner so Silver guarenteed .Steiner made the 258kg make his total 1kg more than Russian Lifter
I remember watching this and jumping up and down with excitement and then trying to explain how amazing it was to my wife and she was like 🤨. I didn't have any weightlifting friends to share the moment with; it was so incredible. Epic.
Yeah, I don't know who decided that weightlifting must be shot from dead straight on, but they're fools. Takes so much of the nuance and dynamism from the lift. And don't forget the pointless extreme close up while preparing for the jerk, causing us to miss most of the jerk. They've been doing this shit for decades, presumably because that's the way it's been done for decades. Even though they use the far more interesting angles for replays.
The commentating by Waxman and Bofa is really good in the worlds competitions from 2017 to today. Early 2000-10s though the commentating is pretty awful.
No question mark needed. This was the greatest weightlifting competition ever. I revisit this video whenever I need a jolt. Three top competitors all breaking world records back to back for a once in a lifetime performance with the man himself Ilya somehow still coming out on top. Art in fucking motion.
This is the greatest weightlifting event I’ve ever seen watch?v=VQW9377IKQQ&t=1368s. The great super-heavyweights of the 80’s in their prime (Kurlovic, Taranenko, Krastev) battling it out. Absolutely unreal lifting. Highlights include Krastev hitting his famous 216 snatch after barely managing 205. And Kurlovic missing 266 by a hair at a bodyweight of only 130kg! The crowd is roaring at literally every lift. It seems they cared more about seeing the biggest lifts than nationalism. Which is the way it should always be. I’ve never felt energy like this at any weightlifting competition since.
I remember watching this live. Had proper goosebumps for the last 15 minutes. Crazy how ilya took the record back a month after again with the insane 246 i think
Must have been an incredible feeling to lift that weight and have the crowd roar like that. Brings tears to your eyes. Has me pumped for my gym session today that's for sure. Wow
I randomly stumbled upon this when I was very new to lifting and went in blind! The competition had me on the edge of my seat! Probably my favorite weightlifting competition ever, the commentators did an excellent job. "This man has never lost!"
I listened to this while doing the dishes instead of watching and am convinced we need a Jack Charmander podcast just doing radio style commentary and explanations of past weightlifting events like this. Like a mini-series or something
Indeed fascinating contest, great lifters with passion. I would say this comes second to me though, battle of Atlanta with Suleymanoglu and Leonidis is the best I have seen. Keep up with the good job mate.
It truly is amazing how much weight these people are not just moving up and over there head, but they speed at which they do it. The human body is incredible.
Maybe the best yep. I think leading up to this comp Ilya had started posting workouts more regularly, and he had 'big friday' which was always something to behold. Good times!
This is definitely up there I would probably say in recent history Rio 2016 85 kilo class was one of the most competitive I've seen in a long time. Big upset too.
It's worse, encouraging simply matching a total instead of you know, lifting more weight in the sport of weightlifting. Puts the focus on insignificant differences in bodyweights. Makes weigh in more of a gamble than it needs to be. Getting rid of the bodyweight rule is one of the best rule changes they've made.
@@AfferbeckBeats yeah I agree, if an athlete wants to win, they shouldn't be able to just match a weight, they should have to put more weight on the bar
Old rule was very lame. Only makes any sort of sense in the SHW classes. The new rules makes the end of the C/J session much more exciting. You can't just match weight which makes jumps more risky.
You can watch the full competitions and see all the warmup room stuff between attempts. And if a documentary sbout 2014 worlds was made, I'm sure a lot of it would focus on doping. It was quite absurd how Kazakhstan had I think thirteen doping positives, paid a half million dollar fine, then hosted worlds the year after, from which resulted a ton of world records, and no doping positives. Or at least not til years later on re-tests.
I never really got to see Ilya compete in his prime with professional quality video. Most of the videos I saw at the time were potato quality crowd videos. He looks so much more jacked here than those Klokov videos I saw him in back in the day!
man I've heard you raise the camera point before but didn't get the big issue until that last clip. all the other times you'd think this is a dead (no cheering from the crowd and stuff) event, but it actually isn't
That final video is one the best in weightlifting. The sport and broadcasters need to to change how we televise the sport. Same old thing for far too long. The sport needs to be a spectacle for the fans and needs to be run at a faster pace to bring in casuals.
that angle at the end give me chills
Dude I teared up

I'm just glad this angle exists. Hot damn.
Same here man, holy shit!
crowd roaring clip at the end gave me goosebumps. Pray for our sport, fam.
The champ being popped makes this plea all the more grim, but I agree. Such a mess.
BRB. I'm off to draw a Nike-swoosh on my Addi-Powers.
if i was a billionaire i would hire a crowd like that everytime i go for a PR
Sika strength did an amazing commentary for the full session as well!
I watched that. I like watching weightlifting but I don't understand the subtle nuances. Why did they keep saying yhang zhe was is so bad? They kept laughing at his technique saying how horrible it is
'here, hold my Stanozolol' ...lol
@@getstrongby4038 no just because his pull is so incredibly slow, which you can really see

Hands down the best moment in weightlifting! My god....the emotion!!
Seeing the whole crowd leap to their feat when Ilya recovers the jerk is awe-inspiring.
David Bedzhanyan had a homemade Nike swoosh on his singlet as well.
I WAS THERE :D You cant even imagine, how loud it was, after Ilya did his final lift
I remember watching this and jumping up and down with excitement and then trying to explain how amazing it was to my wife and she was like 🤨. I didn't have any weightlifting friends to share the moment with; it was so incredible. Epic.
OMG! I have the same day . 😂😂
I love this format! As a casual weightlifting fan, seeing these competitions is so much better with context. I’d love it if you made more of these!
The government got my boi Ilya pushing pencils now.

Fully enjoyed this! Loved the commentary! I'm glad all these guys made sure their hands were on the bar and they're feet were under the bar.
