That is a fancy truck, I used to go on the road with my husband. You had to idle the truck to get heat or air. Sleeping in the truck was the safest I've ever felt. It was always warm and confined and snuggly. He passed away several years ago, I miss him and being on the road.

Totally agree with you. I’ve never driven a semi but I’ve ridden in a few. It’s absolutely amazing to me that people are so eager to pass you truckers but then get right back in front of you and slow down, not realizing that there are several tons of steel and other things right behind them. When I pass a semi, I pass it fast. Not dangerously fast, but it’s likely they can’t see you in the mirror, and if they can, that’s one more potential idiot they need to look out for. When you pass a semi, do it fast, get in front at a safe distance, and get away from them to give them room. It’s not that hard. Sadly most people don’t get that.

He eventually taught me how to change gears! That was the good ole days when trucking was fun, 80’s & 90’s! I got to see the country from coast to coast! He passed away last year but he left me with a lot of memories! I was proud to be a trucker & a truckers wife! RIP Sidewinder from Tn!

The lord Jesus Christ is a rock in time of grief. Always there to comfort and literally hold you through times of great sorrow.
I lost my wife of 11 years to esophageal cancer in 2005. For almost 3 days after her funeral I was a complete mess.
I remember praying, lord I don’t have the strength for this, I need you now to get through this. I was balling like a baby, never had felt so helpless in my life. The most incredible thing happened before I even finished my prayer, I immediately felt like someone was wrapping a perfectly warm blanket over my shoulders and gently holding me close. I had a feeling of great optimism and joy at that very moment. Had never experienced anything like that in my life and I was 44 at the time. Is there a God, does Jesus exist? I’m here to tell you yes.

Try adjusting your sleep hours from day time to night time driving immediately over to night time into late morning over the course of 1 day to make your first delivery at midnight and the second at 5 am. How much sleep could you get. I got 4 hours of sleep during that run just a couple of days ago. Also I drove minimum 6 hours nonstop before I had to stop and take a 30 minute mandatory break before I could get rolling again. Trip planning, which includes figuring out how long it's going to take for you to get to your pickup and delivery including if you are going to be delayed going through big cities and figuring out the best routes to take getting to and leaving your destinations and places you plan to fuel up and park for your mandatory 10 hour break. But there will be situations where something doesn't go according to plan, example instead of waiting 2 hours to get unloaded, you end up waiting for over 5 hours even though you were an hour early to your delivery appointment and that will really put a damper in your plans now you are out of hours and can't drive legally until your 10 hour break is over, but the place you delivered to does not allow trucks to park overnight and they tell you that you have to leave. What do you do in that scenario? This is just one of the many things about how hard work in trucking really is. You lose out on sleep, you get some customers that treat you like garbage but there are quite alot who are nice to you, unload you fast and will either allow you to park overnight or tell you a very close place you can park like a vacant lot or on the street. Dealing with idiots on the road is just the basic concept of stress we get. Anyway I am going to sleep in this company's Cascadia and as comfortable as the sleeper in these new trucks are the ride sucks. Every bump you hit on the road you are going to feel it. They don't call these freight shakers for nothing.

Jalopnik : Thank you for this video, and thank you, Volvo for helping to make this video possible. My mother died in June, 2000. For several years before she died, she had said many times that she wanted to go up inside one of those big trucks. She had heard many times just how nice they are.
I live in Graceville, Florida; and my parents lived just on down the road from me. Well, one day, a couple of months or so before she died, I had a doctor appointment at the V.A. hospital in Montgomery, Alabama; and Mother wanted to ride up there with me. She liked to get out every now and then. Well, on the way back, somewhere between Ozark and Dothan, I mentioned how she had been wanting to go up inside one of those big rigs, just to see how they are. Mother was tired and she said no. But then I told her, Mother, if you don't do it now, you may never get another chance to go up inside one." "Okay," she said.
So we stopped at the Volvo truck "store" in Dothan. I went inside and told them I had my 82 year old mother with me and she would like to go up and see inside one of their big trucks. She'd been wanting to for years to see inside one of those big rigs. Well, that impressed them, so they gave me a key and told me which one. The one we went inside, wasn't one of their biggest, but it was still nice. I had to pick up my mother to put her inside, she was so crippled with arthritis.
But once my mother got inside, she was like a little kid in a candy store. She was fascinated. Both my parents are gone, and I got the house. My kitchen has a lot of cabinets. This truck had almost as many cabinets. It had bunk beds. It two big, three drawer chests, a big screen TV. A big microwave. It had closet space. Mother was impressed. Well, when she got ready to leave, she wanted to go inside the building and thank them for letting us have this little tour. That impressed the staff. And less than two months later, Mother fell and hit her head on something, and was brain dead within 50 minutes. She died of a subdural hematoma. But that little experience with the Volvo big rig, was one of the most fascinating experiences in her life.

Except for the people knocking on your door begging for money handouts (or in exchange for sex acts), cops pounding on your door telliing you to move because an unpublished city ordinance disallows overnight parking, constant harassment by highway patrol, food poisoning from spoiled food, dispatchers telling you to run days this weeks and nights next, crappy pay for work no one wants to do and companies complaining about not finding enough drivers while behaving as though they could replace you at a moments notice.

I felt a lot better after I got an electric hot plate and started cooking a basic meal instead of truck stop food. I made rice, throw in slices of fresh bell peppers and onions, toss in some meat and/or eggs and seasoning. I changed it up by using red beans, black beans, corn, wrap it in a tortilla and make it southwestern-y. Add raw avocado or other fruits/veggies and throw in whatever produce you find ripe at local stores.

Haven't trucked in 13 years. But I did sleep like a baby in my rigs. Loved the gentle vibration of the engine running, relaxing every muscle in my body. Didn't have all the nice stuff you showed (TV, video games, fridge, etc.) but that just made me appreciate home time even more. Everything else about trucking mostly sucked, but sleeping in a rig wan't one of them!

I've been living in a Kenworth T680 for the past 3 years to save up for a house and I love it. basically I get paid to travel. In my unit I have a 27 inch smart TV and pay only $100 US for high-speed wifi at Pilot Flying J truck stops. it comes with a small fridge but I have a large cooler and a large cooler size deep freeze. I also picked up an air fryer/microwave so I can cook raw food. Chicken fingers galore! A Kuerig coffee maker and a toaster provide breakfast each day and since I'm single, the top bunk became a storage area for the coolers and a couple bins of anything else I want to store. I also had my mountain bike up there for a while but now I have a scooter folded up under the bed and several types of footware for weather changes.
I stay in here 2 to 3 weeks at a time and absolutely love it. Oh, and my passenger seat doubles as a massage chair or recliner for watching movies with hot popcorn.

I once drove a '72 Kenworth that had an 8v92 transplanted in it. The other two spare tractors were being used, so I got the Kenworth. The best part of it was when the mechanic pulled me aside to explain the gears...
"This is the main, and this is the brownie."
I responded with "Don't confuse me. Which one do I shift, and which one is the ranges?"
He just patted me on the back, and said "You'll do okay."
I did do fine that day, but if I would have had to accelerate up a hill from a stop, it would've been a long drive up as I would've had to go up in 1+4. I was a bit slow with the main.
I count myself as privileged as most people my age (50) have never even seen a two stick, let alone get to drive one.
As for the 8v92, I found it to be a well mannered, and very capable engine. No need to slam my hand in the door to get it to work, like all the stories that I've heard about the 8v71.

    • @DrFruikenstein

Lord Nerotix If you bring the RPM up to 900 to 1000, the fuel burns more completely, and the oil lubes better, so you don't wear out your cylinders.
That having been said, over time, the idling will take its toll. It's actually harder on the pocket book than it is on the engine. Fuel costs money.

I got to spend 2 weeks on the road with my dad before I moved to Europe and it was the best time ever. I learned how hard of a job it is, especially when waiting for the next load, ever increasing fuel prices, traffic jams, and just finding a place to rest. My dad's truck was much bigger than this Volvo. It was a Western Star and had an extended cab with a shower, toilet, kitchen and bunk beds. Pretty much his real home and now I can see why he'd stay away from mom for so long. Just dad, his dog, 12 string guitar and house on 18 wheels. God bless all of you truckers out there. Company trucks aren't given auxillary power units, fridges, microwaves or tvs. Were given a bunk heater which doesn't do anything for you when it's 100 outside and 120 in the truck. And that for us big guys these 5" thick mattresses just collapse and you're sleeping on hard plastic.

Try spending weeks at a time in that little box never being able to leave it for longer than a meal and a shower. Add to that long weekends sitting in a truck stop waiting for a business to open so you can drop or load and you have the makings of a shit career.

This isn't a REAL test. Anybody can sleep inside a bobtail truck while parked in a quiet parking lot in a controlled safe area. I challenge this guy to sleep in this truck while hooked to a refrigerated trailer loaded with 40,000 lbs of packaged frozen chicken that has to be kept at an ambient temperature of 10 to 20 degrees on a warm night in the truck parking lot of an old mom and pop truck stop down by the waterfront in a rough part of town with lot lizards knocking on the side of the cab every hour. Or better yet stranded in traffic on I-80 in Wyoming during a snowstorm with sustained windgusts of 50 mph rocking the truck from side to side for over 8 hours. When this guy has conducted a test like that i'll be more than happy to hear what he has to say about how well he can sleep inside this truck.

I am 64 & ran long haul back in 80s-90s, most of the time I drove a COE Navstar or a Pete COE. trucks sure have changed over the years. I remember the first time I saw a refrigerator for a truck. We bought one & had it sitting on the doghouse. As for the sleeper. When I was assigned a truck, the first thing we did was stop at a truck stop. They sold small cans of lysol spray. We would put the mattress on it's side & use the whole can of lysol all over it, then open the vents in the sleeper. We would give around 1 hr. to let the lysol work & to air out the truck too. The reason we did that was the mattress was used by drivers before me. We had no idea what was on them. Then we would put down a clean sheet & pillow too . All truckers I knew did that. I have been told by truckers that company's give them a new mattress for each new driver now. We only had heat/AC if the engine was running. Also the CB was a life line for us too. I heard not many truckers use them much anymore. Just wanted to let you guys know what it was like back in the day.

I remember when one of these videos first surfaced and every trucker was saying how you either are lucky to get a truck this cushy or you never get a truck like this without almost going broke.
