The Truth Behind The Real Macbeth | The Real MacBeth

  • The real Scottish king Macbeth was a far cry from the great Shakespearean villain, but his story was even more fascinating, presenter Tony Robinson discovers in his continuing series which uncovers the myths behind legendary British heroes. The original and real King Macbeth lived in the 11th century and reigned from 1040 to 1057. He was not the vicious, jealous, superstitious murderer Shakespeare painted, but he took a path to the throne that was just as bloody.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

does anybody else get the feeling that there’s another level here? Malcolm comes to fight Macbeth, but he’s only paying for his english queen; when he gets to be king he’ll be under england’s thumb. He’s facing down the man doing what Malcolm should be doing, preserving Scotland for the Gaels. He should throw in his lot, abandon his queen and join the Gaels. He lets his selfishness get in the way of a greater good.

History is written by the Victors, how true. I guess I bought into Shakespeare's play as pretty much fact. Now I look at it differently. Ever since I was young I had doubts about recorded history, and it appears I could have been correct. There are many examples. In the US we celebrate the war in 1812 as a great win but I hear the English students are taught it was an English victory. There is fact and there is fiction and somewhere in the middle you will find the truth.

I have a very prominent Scottish family and when I was a little girl my father said don't ever let anyone tell you you are not born of Scottish Kings! My entire family is gone now. And I would love for somebody to want to take over studying the family as it is remarkable. My dad was the Scotsman through and through I lived in the UK for many many years but I never made it up to see where we came from. I wanted to retire in Scotland but it seems that without at least $1000000 you are not considered independently wealthy in the United Kingdom which is no longer very United. The gvt offered a great deal of help for people of Scottish heritage (as I am also) to return and resettle - a generous package of e.g. housing and financial help plus other needs. (Knowing about this is why I wanted to understand something of your circumstances). Scotland is a great country with lots to offer and far, far fewer social problems than England, which I wouldn't recommend nowadays for anyone unless they're £billionnaires! Ahh, the number of Kings that took their thrones by force of arms far out number those who were the legal, hereditary Kings. Greed rules over all.

So true...and yet.....who the heck would want to be king (or queen) ? I'd have been much happier as a wealthy "nobody".

This history of my family has nothing to do with the play. Not really I mean there were a couple of people who were alive then from the play but it wasn't taken directly from Shakespeare.

Elizabeth I had just died, and James had ascended the throne. James was, of course, a Scot, so Shakespeare wrote Macbeth to appeal to him. Under Elizabeth, Shakespeare's women were generally good, strong, resolute, and charming. James was superstitious and had a real fear of witches; Macbeth is the only play that features them. Furthermore, (in the play) Macbeth's line dies with him, but after Banquo's murder, his son Fleance survives to sustain the line culminating in James.

Wish I could watch this but the audio quality is horrendous. Tried to watch thos documentary before on Timeline (noticed that most of your videos are directly ripped from them) and the audio was just as bad. The least that could have been done was fixing the audio *before* posting this again to your own channel.
