Stop Losing Fish: GET IT OUT THE WATER! (Ep.1) New Zealand Spearfishing

Removing your catch from the ocean is a very important step to landing fish but can often be overlooked. Having a plan beforehand can save you a lot of trouble and potentially avoid dangerous scenarios.
Many people like to eat fish, but so does every single shark, and the sea is full of them. The longer your prey is below the surface the higher chance you have of encountering the oceans most beautiful predator!
I am not a perfect diver but believe more can be learned from focusing on mistakes rather than simply what went right. Each video in this series will focus a specific fish and the lessons that can be learnt from the experience. I aim to share what I have learnt, in order to improve kingfish capture success rates, reducing the abundance of easy meals for sharks.
The star of this video is a heathy yellowtail from early in the season. Out around Auckland's offshore islands the warm waters pushed in from far out to sea, returning the kings to their rightful place!
Here in New Zealand, we typically run into bronze whaler sharks. Many would testify that they have become more aggressive in recent times. People taking up the lifestyle don't have the proficiency or knowledge to successfully target kingfish. Poor planning, bad shots and clueless but well-intentioned newcomers means easy meals for opportunistic sharks.
It is becoming a real problem, though no serious bites so far, a lot of unnecessary blood has been shed. It's not a rarity to see people parade dead sharks on social media nowadays.
The way sharks are acting is our fault and some are killed for it, with many advocating to shoot bronze whalers.
