Is there a way to avoid a shark attack when spearfishing or freediving? Every year, around 80 unprovoked attacks are reported worldwide. Despite their relative rarity, many people fear shark attacks after occasional serial attacks, such as the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, and horror fiction and films such as the Jaws series.
Only a few species of sharks are dangerous to humans. Out of more than 480 shark species, only three are responsible for two-digit numbers of fatal unprovoked attacks: the great white, tiger and bull. These sharks, being large, powerful predators, may sometimes attack and kill people, notwithstanding the fact that all having been filmed in open water by unprotected divers.
Alchemy spearo & freediving instructor Garrett Moss, a very experienced diver in the shark infested waters of Hawaii, explains in glorious detail what to do in case you are confronted by a shark when spearfishing or freediving. Should one fear the shark? Should he swim away? When should one get out of the water? What can one do when met by a group of sharks? Watch and find out.
