    A Navy Buffalo of that era would not be a dirty bird, they were kept immaculate. Another awesome build David!

      That is absolutely correct. The aircraft crew chief would give some poor sailor a sever ass-chewing if a the airplane was ever that dirty! Every photo I've seen of the pre-war F2A1 and F2A2 Brewster's are always in almost immaculately clean condition

    This is fantastic job you did with a relatively 'difficult' kit - not where parts fit is concerned, but making it look good when it has minimal detail.
    The following isn't a criticism of your build - just a little reference material for anybody interested: The thing about the interwar US Navy was, it was all about appearances (public relations) and the stress was on either performance contests (if you ever see the letter 'E' on the side of a plane, it stands for Excellence in whatever function the plane was designed to perform) and inspection scores. So the chance of any plane in these colorful paint schemes being all scratched or oil-stained was minimal. Inspection scores were THE big deal as there were constant inter-ship and inter-squadron competitions for bragging rights - be it inspection, bombing accuracy or the ship's baseball team. Sure, usage would cause unavoidable stains and wear & tear, but once the plane landed the race was on to get the plane back to looking as new as possible.

    I really enjoy your builds and get a lot of inspiration and tips for my own builds. I have a tip for you for making antenna wires and other extremely thin wires. I too used to use nylon wire and found it extremely difficult to use and paint. I started to collect old battery clockworks and took out the copper wire windings. The wire is hair thin and is much easier to manipulate than nylon. The clockworks are very cheap even if you buy a clockwork kit for about $10. The spool will last quite a long time. I have several that I salvaged from clocks that stopped working. The wire is great for cockpit and other areas where very thin wire is needed and you can also wind it around thicker wire for effect.

    I really enjoy all your articles, but being a 1/48th scale aircraft modeler myself (mostly), I always get excited when I see you have done a 1/48th scale aircraft again. This model is no exception - really great work. What really stood out for me is how you took a pretty old and average kit and gave it a makeover with a result on par with what you can get out of some of the newest kits on the market. Thanks for the video!

    I have just bought this for my 2nd build. First was a 1/72 zero. I’ve decided to build unloved vehicles and planes. This was considered a flying coffin but used well by the Finns. If I can build to 10% of your standard, I’ll be happy. I’ve learned a lot from your videos and realised that some skills as an illustrator are useful in model making.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm fairly certain the Thach Weave developed with the F4F Wildcat in mind.
      The tactician who developed it was in a squadron that was converting FROM Buffaloes to Wildcats.
      The Buffalo pretty much played a ZERO role in the US Navy after Pearl Harbor. They pretty much became trainers after the end of 1941. The USMC had a horrible combat experience with them at the Battle of Midway... They lost 13 out of 20 Buffaloes they had on the island!
      The Finns were the only ones with an air force that had a good experience with the plane...

    I truly admire your modeling skills and your models are fantastic to say the least. The best lesson I ever learned from my best friend who, like you, is off the charts when it comes to models told me to stop trying to be as good as he was. I realized that was never going to happen. If I were to build a thousand more models they would never be as good as his. But that’s the whole point. A person needs to build a model for himself, not to achieve a model as good as someone else. Sure, we all want our models to be spectacular like yours are, but not everyone has that talent. I sure as hell don’t and I came to the very stark realization that I pretty much suck at this hobby. But, I’m permanently disabled now and I build models just to keep my mind and hands busy. They’re never going to look good or win any contests, but that’s ok. I never built models for that purpose anyway. So, I build them for no more than something to do. A hobby should be enjoyed and if it isn’t, a person should maybe find a new hobby. I certainly enjoy watching you build your stuff though.
    Best wishes,
    God speed
